    So does polar aligning your telescope help with maintaining a visual of the object you’re looking at when you use the slow motion control knobs?
    Also what is the purpose of the latitude numbers you looked up on your phone? I get pointing the scope south but why latitude?

      G'day, mate!
      1) Yes, once it's Polar aligned - the equatorial mount moves in the same arc as the star/planet travels across the sky - pretty neat right?
      2) Pointing south means we have moved it towards the pole - Check
      however, the specific degree to Polaris changes based upon our location - say closer you are to the equator the degree to the pole would be lower - check latitude for Darwin vs Hobart. if you are somewhere in Antarctica - the polaris would be close to or exact 90 degrees (right above us) but from Sydney it's 33 degrees. Hope I've not confused you further :)

    thanks for that last point about looking into history: I have always imagined travelling to a spot 100 light years from Earth with a super-powerful telescope and from there looking back at our planet up close to see the world in action in 1921 :) - thanks for your instructional videos!

    Don't know if you actually took this into account with the setup, but I can't see that you adjusted for magnetic declination based on your location. Long exposures would thus be impossible if I understand correctly. So apparently you can view your magnetic declination per location so my case, my magnetic declination is -27 west so I take 180-27= 153 so I need to point my scope to 153 degrees on my compass, is that correct?

    Does the earth rotate around the magnetic north south for polar alignment?

    • @LayManSmart
      @LayManSmart  2 года назад +1

      Short ans would be no. Now a days compass on your phone can show true north/south if you adjust the setting for polar alignment, hope it helps.
