- The weekend saw the fastest Milano Sanremo in history, but apparently the easiest, according to Pogačar. He attacked relentlessly up the Poggio, but it wasn't enough to shake off the eventual, yet somewhat elusive winner, Jasper Philipsen. What were the tactics of Alpecin-Deceuninck? Dan unpicks the race, revealing team tactics and the final sprint analysis. In other news, Elisa Balsamo battled the world champ, Lotte Kopecky, in a sprint finish to win Trofeo Alfredo Binda and the Tour de Normandie Féminin has its winner.

Was the winner of Milano-Sanremo a surprise to you? 🧐
I know it's not pro cycling but could GCN or gcnracing go and cover domestic races?
Yes, but thanks to MvdP. Best world champion cycling could get.
Tim is beter in my opinion but that’s just my opinion
He was the defending champ, he should have defended his title!
Not following Pogis wheel and give the win to his team mate that’s bs
No, you gave it away in the title of the show
Pogi casually outsprinting Pedersen is wild tho
The World Champion, defending race champion, riding for a teammate. VDP what a f*cking legend and class, class rider and teammate.
No better world champion than MvdP for cycling. And don’t forget he’s currently a 2-time world champion on the road and cyclocross. Imagine of he takes gold at the olympics this year… 🚀
Tactics were easy. MvdP knew Jasper had good legs after the final downhill so MvdP countered everything for Jasper to finish it off. What a duo. 🚀
perfection for them wasn't it?!
Your kidding, right?
The new Cancellara machine on flat
Guys, I don't know you, but I'm so sorry for uncle Matthews: this was one of his last chances to win the first Monumento
Still a great and dangerous rider at his age. Respect!
@@Bryan__X__ Write him down for the grand tours, he's gonna take another stage somewhere.
@@Tibovl I hope so.
why the last chance?
I'm usually the one giving props to WVA and being a bit harsh on MVDP with their riding styles saying WVA is the one doing the work (as leader or teammate to others) while MVDP sees the benefit. I have to admit MVDP was the MVP and beast this day. His work on behalf of Phiipsen was nothing short of amazing. Love unselfish riders, especially unselfish riders with the level of talent that MVDP possesses. All I can say is Bravo Mattieu! I'm sure one who might not feel the same as me is Bling! What a ride by Matthews, so close.
They are pure class. Good for the sport. I’m a belgian but I love MvdP no less then WvA. Legends. I watched their cyclocross rivalry from the start years ago went to many races and watched them battle to then go to the road and be the biggest stars of the sport. I love cycling and their sportsmanship. We are so lucky to be in this era of cycling. ❤️
What about all those times he has helped teammates in sprints? E.g. last year he almost towed Phillipsen to the finish line in pretty much every sprint in the TdF (although Phillipsen would have probably won a number of those sprints even without those tows, because he’s probably the best sprinter in cycling)
Altough without MVDP, Matthews would have been at best second aswell. Or Pogacar has a gap at the top and rides to the line which leads to sprint for second. Or Mohoric rides away at the bottom of the climb and also making it a sprint for second. So Bling should not be angry with MVDP and be proud of his performance thanks to al the work of MVDP.
@@larsvisscher0410 good points, although it may take some time for him to realize those.
@@Bryan__X__ couldn't agree more...
Brilliant breakdown of the Weekends biggest one day race of the year so far Dan 👏🏻👏🏻 I don’t think MVP has been given enough credit for matching Pogacar on the way up 🤔😊
The biggest so far is Strade; MSR is a weak race and only liked because of its classic status
@@whatwelearnedthat was the weakest field. No top dogs there.
@@luiscolon921 Less prize money due to status. No-one thinks msr is a great race
Virtually all in the top 10 haven't been given enough credit for matching Pogacar on the way up... Philipsen was only some seconds slower. Ganna was as fast as he was positioned worse at the bottom of the Poggio.
Greetings from the cycling racing desert (USA)
I miss GCN+
HBO + is fine, what are you gabbling on about?
HBO+ is fine? Uhhh……what? I finally sucked it up and paid an obnoxious amount of money for flobikes and a vpn because no one except Discovery+ in the UK has the full calendar, but you can’t access them with an American credit card. US cycling fans are really at a loss without GCN+.
Not so sure. Here's Ant McCrossan (or is it Marty? his brother - hard to tell the difference.) correctly calling the final of the Vuelta Catalyuna on the world feed. ruclips.net/video/FXLdJazbb2U/видео.html And here's Carlton, and Brian on Eurosport/Discovery+ making a complete Horlicks of it. There was only one rider to identify ffs!!!. This reminds me of Phil Ligget at his worst. ruclips.net/video/wMZcWHJ0Avs/видео.html
Jasper is the fastest sprinter at the moment. But I can't forget his behaviour in the 2023 Tour.
Not uniquely his problem, plenty of sprinters do this.
What other current sprinters have use "tacticts" like Phillipsen?@@AllahDoesNotExist
Forget about it. He’s a world class sprinter maybe the fastest in the world at the moment.
Oh stop. The only reason you “can’t forget” it is because whiny cyclist keep being whiny cyclists.
Congrats on your terrible argument@@Bryan__X__
Such a great race - great to hear Dan's thoughts
Great breakdown on the lead in to the finish. Very impressive performance
What an analysis!! Great job Dan! Thanks
Such an awesome and beautiful race ! Now I really want to know what brand eyewear Matthews uses, as they are proven durable :-)
What Pogacar needs to understand is that winning MSR is nothing but "perfect timing", not "perfect tactics". See- Jasper got everything well executed up to the very 100 metres when he "timed" perfectly his attack & sprint.
Perfect tactics.
Great analysis.
Im just glad Pogacar didnt win. Felt sorrow for Mathews though didnt have WC pulling for him or a stacked team
Great finish and win at Milano- San Remo . But I must confess that when I saw Matthews so close I really hoped for that big one for him . From the overhead it appeared to me as though his legs said 'no' for just a second as he neared the line but that he also said 'no' to his legs. What a fighter he is. Of course the biggest controversy can be settled easily - thank such powers that be that those execrable ( apt adjective employed ) AG2R brown shorts are gone. Those things just brought the whole picture down a tone and a half.
Milan San Remo is one of the easiest to ride since it's mostly a breeze, but probably the hardest to win 'cos of the ending, which can leave possibilites open for different people
Very intriguing ... the previous Milano San Remo speed record was set in 1990, with steel (or aluminum?) bikes, no aerodynamic anything, rim brakes and old school gearing and shifters. Was the course easier? How else do we explain why it took so long to break the record?
gigantic tailwind maybe
Maybe tactics? Why ride the first 80% fast when everbody is chilling?
What I’ve since learned: in 1990 Gianni Bugno won the race on a Francesco Moser AC, steel frame, ~ 8.9 kg or just under 20lb with down-tube shifters, chain ring 52/42 and 8 cogs in back.
Forgetting one massive factor. Everyone was doped to the gills back then.
@@Tibovl no way! :D
Such bad luck for Ganna, he was in incredible condition
Yea i think everyone knew if jasper was in the mix at the end it was game over.
Of all the people you want to win a race (and at the MSR there were many favourites vying for that title, Pog, Pidcock, MDP, Mohoric, Pedersen, Ganna, Matthews...) and then there's the one you don't.
After last year's TDF antics, Philipsen is the rider in the pro peleton that I least want to win anything. So an outstanding last 20kms, but with a bitter aftertaste.
Stellar sprint from Jasper and MVP even better. I watched Chris Horner's coverage already so I am good.
Spectacular job by the Alpecin team. After the race I didn't think people were giving MvdP credit for all the work he did in the last 3-6km.
It's incredible that Pogacar can sprint that well
Pogačar certainly impressed with that sprint!
Could it be both fast and easy due to favorable winds?
It didn't surprise me that a sprinter won Milan-San Remo. It wasn't that long ago that Degenkolb won it as did Goss. Both were capable sprinters. Zabel won it four times. It's not as flat as a crit, but this race offers a chance for sprinters with some endurance.
Had to laugh at the edit at 12:27...you guys picked the "best" ads showing at the top of the GCN website...
Waiting for Chris Horner's "knucklehesd" comments😂
I don't understand why UAE didn't bring Politt and/or Bjerg. (Bjerg is injured, but he was never planned to start anyways)
I think MVDP is a big reason Jasper is a great sprinter
He sure is.
It's the same thing with Quickstep sprinters for the last 15 years: great sprinters, but above all, a great lead out.
Pogacar did not ask Wellens to ride, he asked Wellens if he should attack now (yes, on the Cipressa). Wellens said no.
No mention of Pidcock's effort at the San Remo end?
12:28 - oops. Stupid ads. I do think Adam could pull off that pink onesie though... ;P
ganna actually had a puncture
Jasper 🐐
MvdP 🐐
UAE letting Tadej down again. He’s too good for that team
I thought of a good idea for a video… can we make a classic ride bike faster by adding store bought materials. A dyi aero gain.
what kind of things would you add on?
@@gcnracing I’d maybe use cheap plastic cutting boards and shape them around the tubes to make a wind foil. I’d use a heat gun to bend them in place. I’d use zip ties to secure them to the tubes and I’d use super glue to hold the shapes together. It would be added to all the tubes copying a modern aero bike but would be removable and wouldn’t leave a scratch, Or add alot of weight. Arts and crafts stores have a lot of different plastic modeling products, I’m sure I could find something there to use. The more I think about it, the more I envision aero add on. The rear stays can be covered completely like a fairing on a motorcycle 🏍️, it would be terrible in a cross wind but faster in a time Trial test for fun. Do it GCN so I can watch it please
Daniel F not agreeing at 1:28
Gcn getting inspired by Chris Horner
💯
Pogacar could have made it a 4-5 person race but stood up on the Poggio perhaps because he doesnt want to tow MVDP to the line? However Pogacars sprint performance makes me think maybe he could have won in a straight drag race with Pidcock, MVDP after all.
It was very odd for him to put such an effort in at 8:05 only to completely stand up a few seconds later and let the group return with real sprinters like Phillipsen. A bit of a tactical mistake I think.
the final sprint of Pocačar was very impressive!
dont forget MVDP pulled 2 attacks down and was on the front, his punch is unmatched in the peoloton (look worlds 23, benidorm cyclocross 24, strade bianchi 21, the punch on the pogio this and last year,..)
don't get ahead of yourself if Pogacar didn't wait till a straight drag race it's because he knew he would get beaten on the flat. Remember even the pure sprinters had tired legs because of Pogacar's attacks so they were not entirely fresh either.
? He didn't sit up; he got caught by VDP. If he'd towed him to the line he'd have been mutilated in the sprint
@@whatwelearnedHe absolutely sat up and pulled over to the left hand side. MVDP was not on his peak form at the weekend, he hadnt raced yet in the whole year-he looked very tired at the end. Did you watch the race?
I miss so much the GCN app, In LatAm no platform interested in cycling fans. 😔
😢 we miss it too
Pogacar Is crazy i like him that he want win everything and San Remo a Sprinter Dynasty Race he can won in time so crazy and dislike him 4 his crazy Dominance who remembers on LA 🙈but hes so talented what he Race etc. he really likes the Sports more than the 2k Generation off course it's a like dislike relationship 🙈😄🤔with pogacar
Get rid of the loud music at the beginning of the broadcast.
Think you owe apology to Filippo Baroncini (UAD) regarding injuries during this year GP de Denain. He broke his Albow 😞
ouch, hope he gets well soon!
Didn't expect to see T Pidders PeePee in this vid
A little bonus!
The disaster nickname dates before JaspPhil 2023 tour de france formidable sprints supremacy,
He has well deserve:
Yasper Dragster
A nickname that suits better his abilities to circuit the most regarded green jersey.
Yet he will still be another cut off like he did to Wout, one dangerous manoeuvre, or a crash away from the infamous title, like every sprinter, that cycling part has god forbids disaster as a rare certainty.
it's Pogačar, not Podgcar hahaha
When you hear how the race was won
I started calling him "Jasper The Master" after watching the Netflix special, he seems like a nice guy. The race proves he is a master.. :-)
thinking jasper is a nice guy just because of the netflix series is easy. you have to look at his race behaviour in the last tdf. kind of a bully tbh.
@@rupert802 most sprinters are bullies, but people can change.. but hey, i like to think positive about one and prove me later I am wrong.
@@rupert802he’s not a bully sprints are chaotic and you have to have balls in order to be able to win them.
Are you 12? You're taking the evidence of an edited netflix promotional show over his actual actions? christ@@blankseventydrei
He's referencing when he pitched a fit because someone attacked in the TDF@@danielmacdonald721
It’s time people get over what Philipsen did in TDF. He rode two sprints where he came off his line. Should have been DQF’ed for one, maaaaybe two. But he never crashed into others or threw somebody in the barriers - which is how some ppl seem to remember him. He is well liked in the peloton and always has shown class in winning and losing. How about giving him a chance?
He’s a hell of a rider, curious to see what he can do in Roubaix.
UAE pay Mark Hershi a fortune…..I don’t think I have ever heard his name in a UAE jersey
Well he fell off after Covid. Though he's already won a race this year so...
@@whatwelearned yes a sub world tour race.
But when he was required to earn his pay at Milan-San Remo up the climbs he was nowhere to be seen and came in 113th…..

Je viens d'apprendre qu'il est belge.
Je le croyais danois.
How annoying are the 1 second clips? WTF?
Pogacar is so doped he calls the fastest Milan Sanremo in history the "easiest race ever". Go figure!
"One of the easiest racest ever", yeah if you're beaten by sprinter and ashamed by it,, blame the easy race (which was also the fastest ever) :p
I actually believe that it was easy for him
If you're beaten by a sprinter, it's clear the main factor in the race was staying in the draft, so not difficult to follow, but very hard to make a difference.
I mean, getting a lead out from the current world and race defending champion, any other result would have been a failure.
Sad to hear Sagan has heart issues....strange for such a fit ahtlete, seems to be happening more often these days. You always wonder in recent years with all the sugar we chow down if thats why we are seeing increases in heart issues in athletes!
😂 Sugar!? Have you missed the enormous amount of myocarditis and other heart issues from the mRNA injections?
Where was Jasper...sucking wheels of course!!
