After decades of fear, some transgender elders celebrate freedom and progress

- For many, community is part of life. For these transgender elders, it's crucial to their survival.
"Just because you get beaten - and I've been beaten many times - that doesn't mean you've been defeated," said 75-year-old Renée Imperato, a New York City resident, who recalls the 1970s, '80s, and '90s through memories of the ridicule and violence she and others faced for being a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Imperato was constantly thinking about her survival in those days.
The AIDS epidemic, violence, and fear have contributed to the disparity in population, leaving fewer transgender elders. But Imperato believes the younger generation's ongoing fight for equality has, in turn, freed the older trans community.

Psychiatric healthcare for a trans person is transition. It's literally the treatment.
Transition towards living as your real gender, instead of being trapped in the wrong gender you were assigned at birth based on genitals. And there are lots of different ways to transition, it's all about finding the right treatment for each trans person. Hormones, new clothes, surgery, etc.

Look up 'why people transition' on any AMA or mental health or pediatric health authority in the nation and in about 5 minutes you can have real, factual information backing up the trans folks. So I don't judge anyone for the choices they make but i tell them that not everyone is so open minded and accepting so always be on gaurd.

I've studied a lot over the years about intersex people, intersex people are people who have genitals, chromosomes, or reproductive organs that don't fit into a male/female sex binary Their genitals might not match their reproductive organs, or they may have traits of both. Being intersex may be evident at birth, childhood, later in adulthood, or never. I'm happy that people are now having the conversations that need to be had about these types of people publicly they shouldn't have to change their sexual organs and fake an identity and become transgender to fit into society whether they change or not they are still intersex people in society they just aren't visibly identifiable as unisex people

Did any of these people indicate that they are “faking an identity”. On the contrary, they literally say they felt like they were living in a body that they DID NOT identify with before-and thus it was only BEFORE they chose to live how they’ve CHOSEN to live and identify that they felt they were forced to “fake an identity”-and solely due to societal pressures that made them feel they had to REMAIN living in said “false identity”. This is about people who finally took ownership of who they always felt they were, but it wasn’t reflected back at them in mirrors. They’ve taken their identity into their own hands after years of living what felt like a lie-did you not hear the black man who said he felt he was forced to live as a female lesbian for most of his life? And that he lived that way only because he felt he HAD to-thanks to so many people in today’s society who are truly just unhappy with *themselves* , but project this upon who they see as “easy targets”.
And maybe I should have started off with this-but WHERE in this video did you see ANYTHING about intersex people? None of these people said they were born with both female and male reproductive organs.
I do agree with you that, since there’s a much larger population of intersex people than most believe or assume, there absolutely SHOULD be more conversation surrounding this topic in order to normalize it, as I don’t believe parents should be the ones who assign which gender a baby will have to live as for the rest of their lives if they don’t go through transitioning process.
However, leaving children to grow up with both reproductive organs would undoubtedly lead to mental health repercussions in today’s more close-minded society. 10 years ago, people would have been much more open to these types of discussion.
Let’s hope that when the new party in government (that has become so extremely far right) calms it’s hateful rhetoric toward those who don’t fit into a box that they can define-that THEN we can actually make progress on topics like this.

@@jorgealejandro672 Gender is shaped by the behaviours of sexes. Its not cultural. You can dress however you want, but when you start acting overly feminine or purposely changing the tone of your voice to sound more feminine then you are going against your own biology. its wrong

People living as their authentic selves given the majority of medical professional orgs only afirm LGBTQ existence and gender affirming care is such a threat to those...an overwelming majority who take it for granted.
