Go to a foam cutter and get yourself some end of block cut off they usually give these away for free(do in essex) end up with a 3m×3m slab of foam about 20-30cm thick

Thank you, and you are 100% correct that’s exactly how I am doing it, not removing them just yet as I am trying to keep as much water out the boat as possible at the moment but I already have the new Perspex, I will be painting her with the windows removed and still have lots of deck fitting also to remove, thank you for your comment it’s appreciated ⛵️🙏🙏

I am enjoying this series & your presenting skills as well as the editing side. At the moment I am painting my boat. It will be interesting to watch when you reach that stage. I've used polyurethane marine paint, thinking it might be easier to use than two pack, however its been a struggle with the weather & being a novice. Foam rollers are rubbish, soI invested in some made of wool. They have proved better. Next time I paint it I will try two pack I think.

Great series.. is the boat a Hurley 22? Looks like my Hurley 20 I used to own…years back… that was a fixer up boat too… she sailed beautifully

Polyester resin would have been a better choice and far cheaper for the roof , bit of ply instead of plastic and would have bonded perfect. But great effort.
Because the boat is polyester resin, epoxy it’s the right way to do it as polyester on polyester does not last as it comes away eventually and I did say plastic in the video but it was actually a 20mm fibreglass sheet that I used, thank you for being here and you comment you are appreciated 🙏⛵️
My thought too, epoxy doesn't bond well to polyester resin, so always use the same stuff. Plastic sheet on the board, feathered edges and could have made a proper job of it
@@jonathanobrien1058 you got it mate my thoughts exactly,I normally just use parcel tape on the board if I want to remove it afterwards, polyester resin hates brown parcel tape lol
@@jonathanobrien1058 You have it backwards. Polyester doesn't bond as well to cured polyester, epoxy bonds much better.

All costs are logged and I will definitely be sharing this info in the last video, so far it has not cost that much apart from the paint as I find most stuff for free from boating friends, thanks for being here is much appreciated ⛵️🙏
I feel with you. I have done the same on a 20 ft sea coast sailer from 1972., the only thing I am not so happy about is the thickness of the fiberglass.cabinets deck and hull all 1/4” kind of flimpdy in my opinion
Hi, this one feels very well built and the hull is in very good order but many repairs and lots of work but I feel she will turn out ok, I am getting there slowly, juggling work and family at the same time slows it down a little but it will come together soon, thank you for your comment and glad to hear you have been here before with this kind of work 🙏🙏⛵️
Living in brittany France i understand your problem with the weather. Now that you fixed the holes above the waterline i hope you don't find holes in the hull😅(except those aft). Keep up the good work. You can do it!

you've got a heart the size of your van taking this project on. you're doing a great job Cliff and i'm sure when its finished it will be just as good or even better than when it rolled off the line.
you're heavily invested in this project now so i guess you are committed to finishing it.
Like you i have taken on projects like this. If you like being up to your arm pits in fibreglass and muck then fair enough. But if you're doing this so that you own a sailing yacht just go out and buy one. it would probably be cheaper and you could be out sailing instead of spending the summer in the boatyard. I built a microlight aircraft from plans it took me nearly 2 years and cost me a bit more than buying one. I did enjoy building it but the grief involved wasn't worth it. I wish i had just bought one. I also had a yacht similar to yours. Mine was a Jaguar 22 i don't own it now but it's moored on Rudyard lake. I sold it because i wasn't using it enough to warrant the cost. Plus it's like the forth bridge as soon as you've finished at one end you have to start again at the other. A sailing friend once told me owning a boat is like standing under a cold shower whilst pushing £20 notes down the plug hole. What make and model is your boat ???.

I already own a 38ft motorboat which is definitely my real baby (if you check out my first start up of the season video you will see her) I am doing this little yacht just for the fun of it but there is a little twist at the end of the project that I will reveal in a future video 😉 and the Jaguar 22 is a great little boat, as much as I like flying I will definitely stick to boats instead of something that fly’s 🤣 but it’s the fun of the build I suppose. I have used Jotun paints for many years now excellent paints, tips,
make sure your stir it well and don't hang about after its surprising how quick it can go Off, lastly don't mix all at once, Have Fun 🙂

Polyester resin would be better, cheaper and adding silica to it give it strength and can be used as a filler. I tend to use epoxy for wood.
Hopefully it works ok but the 20mm fibreglass sheet I used and bonded should make it stronger then the rest of the boat 🤣 🙏⛵️

Check out ECF - East Coast Fibreglass supplies. They will do colour matched (sorta) gelcoat, polyester resin (cheaper), and do videos on how to use all their stuff. Plus all the bits and pieces you need
Will do 🙏 thank you for this info I will check it out, I have always used the West Systems and never had a problem but it is a lot more expensive than polyester, the only reason I have not used polyester is I did a big fibreglass job on a 60ft boat and it delaminated so never used it again. I was told to used epoxy on polyester unless using a gelcoat finish, in this case she is being two pack painted ⛵️
Peanut butter consistency, it would be chunky peanut butter if I did it😉
Good choice using West Epoxy, far better than using cheap polyester.
I need to use some heavier mix when I start fairing 🤣 really thick peanut butter mix and a 45 gallon drum of West 🤣 🙏⛵️

I would suggest you removed all the remaining deck fittings including rails in order to make it easier to renovate the rest of the deck area. After all how secure are the remaining deck fittings. Many would be overwhelmed by the amount of work ahead but you're going the right way, just concentrate on a bit at a time.

Have you thought of putting a temporary shelter over the boat so you can work on her threw the British summer rainy days?
I have indeed, I found the perfect one for the job but the cost was the price of doing the whole project so thought I would persevere with our lovely weather, I would ideally like to find a big unit as I have a few boats, this could be the future plan 🙏⛵️
You're a braver man than I Gungadin🙃 but it's fun watching you fix up this old lady. With the larger holes, especially on the stern, have you put a backing piece of fibreglass to reinforce the peanut butter? With the coach roof, what was the depth of the gap between your "black" panel and the finished level of the original coach roof i.e. how much fibreglass mat did you have to add, in the video the black panel looked quite flush. I'm looking forward to the next installments.😊
I added some fibreglass behind the stern holes before filling them with the epoxy, on the coach roof I used a 20mm fibreglass sheet and epoxied it from inside to the coach house roof and the I added another piece from the outside in the cutout and bonded that to the other sheet, the used 4 sheets of fibreglass to fill the small level difference between, I think it should be solid as it’s definitely well bonded 🙏⛵️ thank you for the question 😎

Is there any kind of MOT equivalent process for a boat or can you just chuck it in the sea at your own whim?
Survey report from a marine surveyor is the best practice ⛵️
Most canals and some rivers you'll need a boat safety certificate to get the licence, but it focuses on things like gas, electrical, heating, and fuel safety, rather than general "road worthiness" (and you can get an exemption if your boat doesn't have any of the relevant systems installed)
your really supposed to use polyester resin with csm as its held together by a binder that poly dissolves and epoxy doesnt
I just thought epoxy would have been better but it’s definitely stronger now than the window putty that was used in the previous repairs 🤣⛵️🙏
@@BoatzUK usually use wooven or combinatiopn matt with epoxy as its sewn and doesnt use the binder, i use poly as thats what 99% boats were built of

Sorry but You should NOT use chopped strand mat with epoxy as the binder used to hold the strands together won’t break down properly, you will prob get away with it🤞 but if you’re doing any more glass work please try get some 400 or 600 biax cloth , or get some combi mat ,thats got biax on one side and has chop strand on the back but the difference is that the chop is stiched to the Biax and therefor there is no binder used to hold the strands together , have a read on the internet about this
