I don't have either but I gotta say, I think the layout of the Steamdeck seems pretty smart. I wish more controllers did this, instead of offsetting the analog sticks so much/far.
I'd personally recommend Steam Deck to people who want a "console" or want an easy and stable entry point into Linux (the Steam Deck encouraged me to pick up Linux as my primary OS of choice). I'd recommend the Ally X (or other Windows handhelds) for the power and for compatibility with anti-cheat or other types of software. If you want a desktop PC, most people would probably want something Windows, too. Of course, you can install things like Windows on a Steam Deck or BazziteOS on a Windows handheld. I love the amount of options we have to pick from now!
I was nervous to start linux gaming on the SD but unless i wanna play something online i actually prefer it now and i dont have any issues with the deck in all hoensty i legit love it
I dont understand when people keep complaining that the Ally X is double the price of the steam deck. If you compare apple to apple, ally x is only $150 more than the steam deck oled 1tb. Yes, you have option buy the $399 LCD model that everyone keep using as comparison. But thats only 256GB. For $150 more than the OLED 1TB SD, you get 24GB of ram, 80Wh battery, faster processor, VRR, 1080p display. I own the original SD and if i were to upgrade, Allay X is a no brainer. Which is soon!!!

"Just want games to work" windows is better imo because of compatibility, steam deck won't run most games unless you spend hours tinkering with Proton SD
I have oled deck and ally x. People never talk about the screen resolution difference between them, 800p stretched over a slightly bigger deck screen is blurrier, whereas the ally has 1080p on a slightly smaller screen that looks super sharp. This with the very noticeably better performance has me on the ally much more than deck. Was a deck fan since launch but I’ve moved onto the newer better tech.
Steam Deck Oled has issues playing newer AAA games. Spend the extra money and buy the more powerful Ally X . You will be future proof until the Steam Deck 2 / Rog Ally 2 comes out in 2026 or later . You cant play games like COD , Destiny 2 and Fifa games because the Anti Cheat doesn't work on Linux based SteamOS. Owned both. Rog Ally X is the one to buy. I guess SteamOS is the Steam Decks biggest strength and weakness.
Y'know since steam OS is arch based you could probably install xfce, gnome or hell even i3 or hyprland to it, they'd be a pain (especially those last 2) to use without a keyboard but you could
I have a Z1 Extreme and ive been a happy camper with it. Played Starfield on a buddies Steamdeck before making my decision and the ROG Ally was the better choice.
Not out of the box but with a little research you can put windows on the steam deck. That's what I've done as a day 1 steam deck owner and haven't gone back.
I'm split between MSI Claw and ROG Ally, I've seen every reviews I could watch and as expected both got their own issues but mostly lean towards ROG Ally so I think I might get the latter
I bought the deck as soon as I could, and after about a year, it just stopped booting. I can't lie, I loved it. It's a brick now, and I can't fix it or afford a new one. I have always been a handheld nerd, and I go back to Game Boy 1. The Steam Deck is fantastic. I loved mine. My friends all have different handhelds and a buddy has the Ally and he says it's legit so maybe I'll go that route... I don't know yet. Not being able to buy either means I have lots of time to do my research lol
The Steam Deck was made because Valve of all companies decided they needed to make a piece of hardware. And when they make something they make damn sure they make it well.
You should really try the legion go, its a pretty good device, along with using lossless scaling, it makes playing most games much more enjoyable in handheld devices
I have wondered about these devices. Could have really used one during COVID times as I had my share of boring hotel evenings then, but those days are long gone now. These are the type of "would be fun to try" before buy...
I mean, if someone is questioning whether to go PC or console, i feel like the simple solution in the short term is picking up a cheap currwnt gen console. Scooping a refurbished on sale series or finding a cheap base, digital PS5. Theres nothing wrong with gaming on both console and PC even if someone picks up or builds a PC later.
If anything, what I would probably end up doing is just gutting out the steam deck, oled and stuffing in all the components from the rog ally x i love the form factor and the feel of a steam deck in hand but the ally x is the king of handhelds, it wins beats out everything hands down
2x the cost for a slightly higher performance? I'll go with the steam deck. These days, you can get a way more powerful PC for $800 used if you find a great deal. A desktop may not be portable, but you get the price to performance you wanted.
Can you please make a (non-gaming) PC building guide for mild video editing and multi-tasking that can still some less graphics-intensive games (the most intensive being something like Minecraft with some shaders)?
ROG Ally connects to the XG mobile (eGPU) graphics card booster, proprietary. Would like to see a comparison on feasibility of connecting Steam deck to eGPU and compare with Ally on XG mobile see which is the best
I love my Ally X :) my family got it for my 40th birthday last week hehe be sure to get yourself a portable external keyboard and mouse for games that are not compatible with the game controller.
Steam kinda seems a bit more power efficient. And also have more controlls, especially trackpads which can be set up in tons of different ways making it very flexible even for shooters or big management games. Friend got rog ally recently (not x), I kinda wonder to swap with him for couple days to see difference.
i don't have a steam deck but honestly at this point there's so many great games out there that having to give up EA games means nothing to me, i can just find something better to play that works on the deck
Test out the Steam Deck OLED, it's a major upgrade over the normal steam deck, and if you're comparing an LCD steam deck to the Ally X, it's just not a fair comparison
My issue with the ROG Ally X is that it has no touch pads, no touch sensors on the control sticks (which are essential for flick stick, and once you get used to flick stick you never want to go back to regular aiming controls) and it only has 2 back buttons. That's way too many setbacks on controls and for almost double the price.
You can still play games that don’t work on Linux by just installing windows on the steam deck. While it’s not the most user friendly process and you need a usb hub and a flash drive, it works pretty well once it’s installed.
You’re able to play AAA titles on the steam deck if you’re willing to buy and install windows on a micro SD card and dual boot between steam OS and windows. I’ve been doing that for the three months and it works beautifully
Usually steam OS would run better then windows, but I debloated my windows install so there wouldn’t be any background applications running. It definitely helped with performance, but it’s a lot harder to maintain then Steam OS
I absolutely love my ally x. Ive never had a blue screen, never have issues with games and the battery life is pretty good. Plus since it is running windows i replaced my desktop pc with it.(my desktop was pretty old anyway)
soon windows might replace kernel level softwares drivers with an api. (due to crowdstrike) if that happens, wine/proton will start being able to translate these api calls, meaning that you might be able to play games with kernel anti-cheat on the steam deck soon.
Replaced my steam deck with the original Ally, best decision I ever made minus the battery life. So much more versatile than the steam deck and just plays everything flawlessly
the steam deck has trackpads. they seem useless, but they make navigating the desktop sooo much easier and the lack of them on the rog ally lock you out of a lot of games. also, correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure dual booting windows on a steam deck is easier than dual booting steamos on the rog ally
I have a ryzen 7 7700x. I play minecraft on shaders. What is a good gpu for my build? I have 3 decisions. The rx 7800xt, rtx 4070 ti, and the rtx 4070 super. Btw I built my own pc at 12. Im subbed btw. Ur the goat.
What I hate is that so many people talk about anti-cheat games and a lot of them are just sports or shooters. I couldn't care less about those games but I want to know the big games like elden Ring and other games that are process heavy that could cause the steam deck to have issues while the ally x has the ability to run them very smoothly but I cannot find anyone who mentions that type of comparison overall
I originally was looking at getting a steam deck but then decided to go for an ROG ally or legion go since I’d use it mainly for online comp. Games on the go which most require anti-cheat software installed. Which in most cases steam deck does not support.
counterpoint: you can just install windows on sd and boot from that or even boot from a partition on the steam deck to play games that dont run on linux or through proton/wine on the steamdeck. and all without losing warranty or being scammed.
If money is no issue then I’d go with the ROG Ally X. If you’re on a strict budget, I’d go with the Steam Deck.

I don't have either but I gotta say, I think the layout of the Steamdeck seems pretty smart. I wish more controllers did this, instead of offsetting the analog sticks so much/far.
Wtf i just stumbled across this its fresh content
?
There are so many steam deck vs __ videos. This is the first one I've seen as a short.
@@Ryhillchibulls I was early bruh😭🙏
I got a non extreme Ally open box for $300 at Best Buy last Christmas and I love it.
I said: "really? Why?" out loud in a subway cart because of this video
I love the amount of options we have to pick from now!
alternative to steam deck and rog ally x: get a ROG Ally Z1
Blud, you know what, whos gonna tell him?
@@Mr.Duckoffical I just made this comment to say I feel like he should've mentioned the rog ally z1
I don’t understand why some people hammer down how steam deck OLED is better than the X. This is exactly a no-brainer. I have gamepass and epic games. I would hate to be constricted to the steam os
@edom5765, those apps already work on the steam deck
@@edom5765Main reason Im getting a Rog Ally X, SteamOS is absolutely awful

Day 23 of asking Zach to make wall art out of his old product boxs.
Funfact: The Steamdeck was the first popular Console (handhelds included) which uses linux.
Unless you loaded it on your PS2/PS3. Not pre-programmed but easy and officially supported by Sony.
@@pboogity8309 was supported* they remived ps3, and that would be installed then, i talking abiut used, out of the box

I don’t disagree with you one bit. Just adding a touch of context to your point my boy.
I'm trying to dodge kernel anticheat at all cost. It's very insecure and most of the times is just a backdoor for hackers and malware. So yeah, play those games at your own risk...
The Rog Ally is incredible already. Everyone loves Steam Deck, I had both, LCD and OLED, but moved to the EOG Ally. The fact that I couldn't play xbox app games installed bothered me. Also, the 120hz VRR screen beats the 90 oled.
One has track pads, one doesnt. Enough said.
I really don't get the appeal with the track pads. My legion go has one and I barely use it
@@benhawk4214 indie game dorks I guess. PlayStation and Xbox didn't have track pads for decades and gaming was no issue.
I never use the trackpads legit never
@@eduardocornejo1866 you want a cookie?
@@eduardocornejo1866a lot of fps games don’t have aim assist and the trackpads are sooo much better for aiming. Or games like CRPG’s and strategy games or games that need slot of mouse input like Civ benefit a ton from trackpads. They can also act like extra binds too. Tbh if the games that do have controller support let me use trackpad instead of joystick but still keep controller suppose I’d use track pad
Im waiting on getting either because I have a Switch OLED and I still am playing games on it. I think once I finish I might consider getting a SteamDeck OLED because my Steam library is packed full of games. I wish the PS Portal could play without WiFi cause I would rather get that, but alas it doesn’t.
They should have done Vita 2 instead of a streaming machine. You can do everything the portal can on a phone with a controller attached. Proves they just want to push streaming / subscription services going forwards. Gaming as we know it is dying.
Damn ally x is as expensive as a decent gaming pc
I got my Steam Deck for 360 with taxes for the 512GB OLED model on Black Friday. For the money, I think it’s one of the most impressive pieces of hardware I own.

GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Windforce OC (the Gigabyte version)
ASUS TUF Gaming B650-Plus WIFI

A pc and a handheld has different purpose. I don't see the point why your recommending a pc to a handheld review. 🤦♂️
@@nathanjuan6042Im not recommending it Im searching for help 🤦♂️
I think hand helds might be a blast from the past. It feels like everyone in my childhood has handhelds then everyone went consoles, then PCs but handhelds are getting competitive soon I feel.
he mistyped the price, Rog Ally costs 699 and Ally X costs 899
Steam Deck on the other hand costs around 499
Only for the oled version, you can sometimes find the base version for around the price of a switch
@@Outlow2400 OLED costs 599, best case, but yes, the standard model can be found for 399 too
Ally is on sale for $400 right now and Ally Z is $699
Refurbished from steam $380
I got ally x with taxes $856.00
That "Red,White,Black " keyboard looks dope
I would never go for windows based handheld not only as windows just an inferior operating system like it has ads even though it cost $150 but if I’m playing on a handheld, I just want my games to work. That’s why steam deck is so good.
If you "just want games to work", you need Windows for that.
Steam Deck OLED
Im getting my rog ally x today. I can't wait
I went the ally because of windows. It's also very usable as a dockable workstation for doing mundane things like text documents and audio editing.
Upside of steam deck: runs linux KDE
Downside of ROG: runs windows
Y'know since steam OS is arch based you could probably install xfce, gnome or hell even i3 or hyprland to it, they'd be a pain (especially those last 2) to use without a keyboard but you could
I'd swap it on its head
I just got Unreal Tournament ‘99 working on my steam deck. The OLED screen is breathtakingly beautiful. I’m in gamer heaven.
800 dollars for a switch that runs windows is a war crime
He is only praising it because it’s a sponsor. RUclipsrs are sellouts so it’s no surprise
Yeah but it's more powerful and better tho
That's an ROG Ally X, not a switch.
The ally x is massively more powerful than a switch. As a rough guide it’s something like 0.4 tflops v 8.6 tflops, so maybe 10 times the power.
@@javi3086 actually 21 times more powerful than switch
I have a Z1 Extreme and ive been a happy camper with it. Played Starfield on a buddies Steamdeck before making my decision and the ROG Ally was the better choice.
Not out of the box but with a little research you can put windows on the steam deck. That's what I've done as a day 1 steam deck owner and haven't gone back.
I'm split between MSI Claw and ROG Ally, I've seen every reviews I could watch and as expected both got their own issues but mostly lean towards ROG Ally so I think I might get the latter
I got the legion go and my experience with it has been excellent
I've had the ally for a few months and windows is not that much of a problem.
I almost bought the RAX yesterday and the store rep hits me with a “It’s sold out, I’m sorry!” 😬
I have wondered about these devices. Could have really used one during COVID times as I had my share of boring hotel evenings then, but those days are long gone now. These are the type of "would be fun to try" before buy...
The Ally with dualboot into steamOS would be crazy
SD OLED with Z1 Extreme is the dream machine
Please make a long form review comparing these handhelds
I heard about pre-release allys with win issues, but I did find any. Though I updated all the things before starting using it
I mean, if someone is questioning whether to go PC or console, i feel like the simple solution in the short term is picking up a cheap currwnt gen console. Scooping a refurbished on sale series or finding a cheap base, digital PS5. Theres nothing wrong with gaming on both console and PC even if someone picks up or builds a PC later.
what game were you playing at 00:50 ?? It looked really good
SteamOS coming stock on Ally X would make it the perfect handheld. However perfect doesn't exist
That's exactly what they announced like 2 days ago or something.
I have both og Ally and steam deck OLED. Both are great devices but I pick up the Ally more now
It doesn’t cost almost double , you have to compare apples with apples a top of the line steam deck vs top of line ally is roughly the same price
How does the Steam Deck run your Steam library as seamlessly as a console if you can't play Madden and FIFA on it?
Yep!
I'd still buy Steam Deck, because it's just a small computer which means you can just install windows on it if you don't want Linux.
Can you please make a (non-gaming) PC building guide for mild video editing and multi-tasking that can still some less graphics-intensive games (the most intensive being something like Minecraft with some shaders)?
Just build anything with a mid range processor and GPU. You don’t need a guide.
If compared, compare Decky with Ally and Decky OLED with Ally X. Especially when you bring on the performance.
i don't have a steam deck but honestly at this point there's so many great games out there that having to give up EA games means nothing to me, i can just find something better to play that works on the deck
Test out the Steam Deck OLED, it's a major upgrade over the normal steam deck, and if you're comparing an LCD steam deck to the Ally X, it's just not a fair comparison
Can you review the legion too😅?
I have both now and my ally X is my favorite .
Please do a review on the nitro blaze 7 next
Is there a tutorial for that?
Just search up how to dual boot windows on a steam deck
How is game performance on Windows vs Ally?
Usually steam OS would run better then windows, but I debloated my windows install so there wouldn’t be any background applications running.
It definitely helped with performance, but it’s a lot harder to maintain then Steam OS
I absolutely love my ally x. Ive never had a blue screen, never have issues with games and the battery life is pretty good. Plus since it is running windows i replaced my desktop pc with it.(my desktop was pretty old anyway)
soon windows might replace kernel level softwares drivers with an api. (due to crowdstrike)
if that happens, wine/proton will start being able to translate these api calls,
meaning that you might be able to play games with kernel anti-cheat on the steam deck soon.
Still have my SD lcd and still rockin. I'll just wait for SD2 if its worth upgrading
Valve steam deck OLED is fantastic, love the fact u can take it out on the go. Play it at home. Play it when I go to my dads.
THAT WINDOWS SOUND GAVE A HEART ATTACK, I AM IN MIDDLE OF DOING SOMETHING AND HEARING THAT IS THE LAST THING I WANT
Ally X is basically the OG Ally but instead of having a proprietary eGPU port they switched to thunderbolt 4
counterpoint: you can just install windows on sd and boot from that or even boot from a partition on the steam deck to play games that dont run on linux or through proton/wine on the steamdeck.
and all without losing warranty or being scammed.
