Technically, FF captures more data and allows greater cropping, but I contend that if you need to crop your photos so much that the IQ differences between MFT and FF become to large to correct in post then you need to either get closer to your subject or buy a longer lens. 🙂 Put another way, at least for me, FF is running 200mph tires on the street - the specs are impressive, but you pay more and don't get any better results.
Snap! I have an E-M10 MkII and bought a ‘bargain’ new E-M1 MkII [£640] last year. Also have the 45mm f1.8 which is currently paired with my Lumix GX80, lent to my son in law to play with before he takes it to a wedding in India [as a guest]. These are all super little cameras. Bought a used battery grip and battery for the E-M1 which are ‘like new’ from MPB for less than half the new price. Lovely! Having said that, I seldom use the battery grip because it makes a relatively small camera rather large. It is useful for a long day of intensive shooting though.

Hi David. I always enjoy your videos! I have an EM10 Mark IV and I love it. I recently bought a Pen EPL-6 for $150. What a fun camera. Small enough to go anywhere, especially with a Panasonic 14mm f2.5 lens. Operates much like my EM10. Great video, although limited to 1080p. You should consider purchasing one just for knocking about! Keep up the good work.
I actually looked at the Pen models but ultimately decided to buy a lumix gx80 for a few reasons. The range finder style body because I have a honking big nose and prefer that it doesn’t squish against the screen when I use the evf and I honestly just prefer the lumix menus. I do have the Pen mini to use as a fun tiny set up though😁 Thanks for watching🖖
You are right David, I to traded up from my Sony tools and went to Lumix with the GH5S and GH6, not looking back 4/3 is fantastic in many ways. I do more video than photos but still do both happily
If you want to put the final nail in the Full frame coffin, shoot Raw and process all your MFT files through DXO Pure raw. Simply amazing software. I will never go back to FF again.
I love to see how excited you are about the micro 4/3 system. I went the same way as you. Only I went for the Lumix G9 with the Olympus OM10 Mrk III as a backup. I will never trade my G9 for a very thick Sony or Canon camera. I had prints made of 80 cm x 50 cm and they look great. Everyone who sees these prints says that must have been done with a FF camera with a lot of MP. No, just with a Micro 4/3 with 20 mp. I completely agree with you. This a very good video for people who are unsure which system to choose. Pro Glass costs half of pro glass for a FF. Kind regards from the Netherlands. Antoine.
Thanks very much. M4/3 a fantastic system and having spent years using full frame from the big 3 I have absolutely 0 regrets about switching. Thanks for watching and have an awesome day 🖖
I've owned the Em1 MkII since May 2020, bought it with the 17mm F/1,7. Have since added the 12-40F/2.8 and 40-150 F/2.8 and 1.4x teleconverter. I cannot think of a single thing this camera doesn't offer that I believe I need (ok, I do want the Leica M11 Monochrom for the B&W sensor but that lottery win remains elusive). I shoot in any weather with either zoom. I also adapt old 35mm glass to the camera and the addition of focus peaking and magnify make manual focus a doddle.
Haha, that sounds familiar although my lottery win camera is Hasselblad flavoured😂 I’m yet to try all of my 35mm glass on the EM1 mkii so I’m gonna be giving them some attention now we’re finally in spring. Thanks for watching, Morris🖖
I diched my Olympus Micro four thirds the other week. I really prefer the chunky rugged DSLR bodies that just feel right in my hands. Use what one finds most comfortable.
Yeah can’t fault that. I still have my canon 6d and while that’s considered small for a ff it’s still a chunky boy compared to the MFT. One of my favourite cameras of all time is the Nikon d800👍
I bought the original E-M1 used and absolutely love it. I have a PEN E-P5 and OM-D 10 Mk IV as well. Olympus is easy to use and I really don't need to do much in the way in post processing for landscape shooting. I can afford the better glass, although most of what I use is Panasonic Lumix Lenses at the moment, although I do have one F4 Pro lens from Olympus that stays on my Mk4 all the time.
Glad to hear you're still loving your m4/3 system David! When I saw this video thumbnail (I watched your first video) I thought "Uh oh...he's going back to Sony!" Everything you said is what has kept me in the m4/3 ecosystem since the E-P1 well over a decade ago. As a matter of fact, when I wanted another camera to back up my E-M5 Mk III, I "reached back" a decade and bought a used Panasonic GX7--and absolutely *love* how it handles!
Yeah I’m very happy with the E-M bodies. I might get myself a lumix body as a dedicated video camera in the future but right now, the EM1 mk ii offers everything I need. Thanks for watching 🖖
I wound up buying a Lumix G7 new about 4 months ago and in hindsight I regret not getting an EM10 m ii used on MPB. Having the superior AF and IBIS would be so sweet.
IMHO, absolutely yes. Had the OEM-1, didn't think the IQ was that great. Noise is terrible on any M43. Not crazy about 2x crop and corresponding slow lenses. Maybe good for a small camera to carry for vacation snapshots, limited landscape. That's about it, IMHO.
Not sure why you think the lenses are slow. I have 2.8, 1.8 and a T0.95 lens in my kit, nothing limiting about that since they let in the same light as ff, but each to their own 👍
I am here because I have a Nikon and om1 mk2, and as I’m looking to buy a new D7, I’m noticing it just has the same features of my Mark 2, and now I am thinking about selling all of my Nikon lenses to buy more Olympus and I’m trying to figure out if I’m crazy.
When I read the video title, I instantly thought it to be click-bait … 😁 I had the E-M1II for a few days - and I should've bought it back then, but couldn't afford it (thus bought the Pen F instead, which actually fits my needs better, but has slightly less IQ and no weather sealing). The E-M1II is just a really good camera with a good grip (for my hands, that is 😉), and the IQ is very, very good (including dynamic range, which is much higher than many might think).
Yeah it was absolutely click bait, but it sounded better than ‘Em1 mark ii - 2 months later’ or something lol The EM1 mk ii is awesome and as I pointed out in a recent video, the dynamic range thing is mostly misunderstood and in some cases just intentionally wrong as on paper even the EM10 mark ii has more dynamic range than practically every canon dslr up to the 5d4 and even some of the mirrorless models like the Eos RP. Have a great day🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Yes, dynamic range is a special topic. Sony does something with their sensors (or rather the data they get out of them) to make them look to have more dynamic range than they actually (technically) have, and they call it "dynamic range optimization". I don't know what they do, but it works astonishingly well; I think they reduce the "physical" exposure to save the highlights and then shift the data to have a "normal" exposure in the RAW file (where it is then quite easy to pull down the highlights without loss of data). If I slightly underexpose to get the highlights right on my Pen F, I can get similar results, but with much more noise in the shadows (the EM-1II is better in that regard). I do have a Sony A7, and I always wondered what Sony is doing with this DRO, and how they get the incredible highlight retention it has. I prefer my Olympus gear for all the reasons you've mentioned, and then some … 😁🖖
Yeah the original A7 is a great camera that I’ve owned twice and it reminds me of my Nikon D600 (similar or the same sensor) which also had great DR (a bit over 14 stops on paper). Even with my canon cameras though, I’ve never felt them lacking in that particular area, I think it’s something that many folks just like to shout about because they heard it from some guy that one time lol
@@DavidFlowerOfficialthe video title I'm starting to despise goes something like " why I bought (insert camera model) and why you should, too". Every video is different - why can't you lot confer and come to a joint decision!😊
The unfortunate downside of RUclips is that the algorithm likes it when people click and the title and thumbnail is the deciding factor for whether a video gets seen or not regardless of content. Even when I use clickbaity titles I at least try and make them relevant to the video lol
gracias por este video , me ayudo a decirdirme por a comprar esta camara y no una apsc , tienes razon en mpb tienen un precio genial , sobre todo para alguien de lationamerica como yo
I figured I knew the answer before I watched this one David!!!! I've been quite tempted by an EM1 MkII since you got yours - obviously I love my Nikon gear, and I use my pair of Lumix GX80 cameras for all the videos plus for a lot of stills too. The GX80s are great, but I sometimes want just a little bit more when I'm shooting stills on them........maybe I can treat myself later in the year..........
I’ve actually been looking at the Lumix bodies for a dedicated video camera and I think once I’ve finished offloading my excess gear on evilbay I might grab something😁
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Yeah, they're a pretty good choice - obviously the GH5 or whatever it is, seems to be the one that a lot of people use - I nearly got one of those when I bought the second GX80, but in the end I cheaped out and got a second of the same camera - that way I could share batteries and so on and save some cash at the same time.
@@DavidFlowerOfficial I think the thing I really wanted was an external audio input (which the GH5 has) so I didn't have to spend so much time syncing separate audio files, but for now I'm happy plodding on the way that I have been as far as video is concerned.
Your EM 1 Mkii is a brilliant camera , but with a articulated screen it doesn’t work for me because I shoot only photos and no video : pity ! It is because of my needs that I use the EM 10 Mkii . It has way more in such a light weight package that it will take a lot to tease me away from keeping it as my prime body . If I could get the OM 5 or 1 with a tilt screen option and I would be ready to purchase a pro body . So, if anybody out there could produce a tilt screen like the EM 1 mki and I would be on the phone to find out if I could afford the work and match it to a mint or very good body .
For street shooting I prefer the flip up screen, but for everything else, especially things like macro, having that extra flexibility really comes in useful. Thanks for watching 🖖
Curious - months go by, are you still this enthusiastically satisfied? Another question - for reasons i won't go into - have you ever tried the original 4/3 E5 (which, obviously, is nowhere near as wide-rangingly competent)? Cheers.
Yes I have absolutely no regrets, in fact I added a GH5 to the m43 line up to cover me as a main video camera and second photo body (since my youngest lad pretty much laid claim to the em10 mkii) Regarding the original 4/3rds cameras I haven’t gone there yet but I intend to since I’ve heard to many good things about them to ignore them 👍
@@DavidFlowerOfficial E1 E300 E400 E500 E620 E5 - those are the interesting 4/3 cameras. All go great with vintage glass. Wouldn't bother with the other 4/3 Olympus as their character and qualities aren't distinctive enough. Thanks for the update on your EM. I have too much good weather-sealed 4/3 glass for it to be irrelevant when the E5 finally expires and your glowing review makes me wonder about just adapting to a good M4/3 instead of getting another E5 body (much as i love the dinosaur).
I own a g9 but most of the time I take my 5d classic or d700… I have a very hard time with Panasonic color science, and for me too much gimmicks on this camera, I love when things are simpler
I shoot raw so colour science isn’t a concern except for video and I quite like the Olympus colours. I’m still looking out for a 5d classic but most of what I see either has shutter faults or an incredibly high shutter count. Thanks for watching 🖖
Sorry to barge in David, fellow Hullensian/Hullite(exiled), here. Looking to buy a camera for my wife and i- I've got experience from years ago with a Zenit, Yashica and a Contax, but I'm so far out of the loop I'm categorising myself as a beginner, and my wife certainly is unless you count phone usage. So I was pretty much on board with getting an Olympus Om-D E-M10(used, obvs!) - capabilities in a smallish form factor, but when I've searched RUclips for best beginners camera, the Nikon D3500 keeps coming up. Now, I might assume there are vested interests at play, as there could be with anything but could you chip in with the merits or otherwise of either product. Usage for her will certainly be landscape, wildlife(birds and butterflies, mainly🙄), family stuff but not portrait, really. I would probably say similar with added people at events. Video isn't something we really do, but I'd be loathe to rule it out at this moment in case it crops up in the future. Any thoughts? Cheers!
I don’t have direct experience with the d3500 but I have owned the d3300 in the past and if it’s gonna be mostly handheld and wildlife, the higher burst rate on the em10 mk ii and ibis will be a real help. The d3500 will offer more resolution (not that important unless you’re heavily cropping or printing huge) and as a former Nikon user, I can say the image quality will be great, but I suspect the mirrorless options like the Olympus and Sony a6000 will have it beat in terms of burst rate for sport/wildlife. As you may have seen from my videos of the Em10 mk ii, I love that thing. One thing I would point out if you’re looking at the Em10 line and ibis is important, the mark I only had 3 axis vs 5 axis in the mark ii and above . Hope that helped and thanks for watching🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial thanks for the feedback, pleasing confirmation bias, Olympus it is - was just trying to avoid buyer's remorse. Used prices are variable to say the least- what a minefield. Oh, I'm not surprised you love your E M10, I would too, the price you paid you practically stole it ! Any more of those going begging? Cheers 👍
Well I always look on mpb for bargains and things like the screen repair are just about within my skill level. Wex is pretty good too, though they seem to have a much smaller stock. Might be worth a look👍
Hoi, I have that Nikon D3500. Its a really great camera for photography... Quite easy to use and gives pretty good images... but, my Daughter have E M1, and oh boy how jelly i am when we go for wildlife i drag that Nikon big zoom lens with me, while she carry that small packet with same reach :D and Nikon aint too good for video.
I'm seconding Jaune here - (small) size and weight does matter, and the E-M10II delivers nicely in this regard (I would actually recommend this exact model, as it has *more* features than the Mk. III, and better sensor and IBIS than the Mk. I)! Wildlife (birds) would rather call for a E-M5III, as it has phase detection AF and better IBIS (and 20 MP); I had an E-M5II, wasn't satisfied (not with IQ, not with IBIS), even though I don't do wildlife of any sorts. For insects the M.Zuiko 60 mm F2.8 Macro would be perfect.
Do you get more micro detail with the Olympus ? Do some of the pro glass outdo some Sony Glass for micro detail ? I am asking this because I have Sony full frame and Olympus.
Honestly I have no idea. I’m not a pixel peeper. My opinion is that an image is to be enjoyed for its overall aesthetic, which is why I enjoy using old manual lenses so much🖖

It really depends on how you like to shoot. Many people will say perhaps a 17mm or 20mm lenses but personally I prefer shooting a bit longer so I mainly use the 45mm f1.8. Best advice I can give is that you use a standard zoom to begin with and see where you feel most comfortable with regards focal length then start looking at primes in that range🖖
Sonys are shit to hold and not fun to use. 100%. I “upgraded” a Lumix GX80 to an a6300. So much regret. I now re-own a GX80 and still use it on occasion
@@DavidFlowerOfficial haha. True on the ergonomics. I preferred the Lumix for video cos of the ibis and I never shoot log anyway. Plus it can be hacked for CinelikeD. The kit lens of the Sony was pretty poor too
A question. I have always wonder why when I see picture from m43 is not as good as others camera like Fuji APSC or Sony FF. Im using EM5iii right now but sometimes I'm amazed by the result of my Fuji XE2. Anyone have opinion? Or does the editing can increase the image quality of m43 camera? p/s: I love everything about my EM5iii, size, features and all just the IQ sometimes makes me wonder.
Well I’ve use ff and apsc from Nikon, Sony and canon aswell as apsc from Fuji and many smaller sensor cameras and I can genuinely say that I like Fuji xtrans files the least of any system I’ve used both in terms of look out of camera and how they edit. I think it’s a combination of things, personal taste, editing and how the images are being displayed and of course the image itself 🖖
The real reason people want to choose full frame is how easy it is to achieve shallow depth of field. Nobody wants to admit it, but composition be damned, as long as there's BOKEH. That, and marketing of course. Specs sheets. Like the talk about dynamic range - you never need more than 6-7 stops. And in extreme situations, you'll stack anyway (although on Olympus you don't have to, because hi-res mode solves the issue)
Yeah the modern obsession with bokeh is kind of a crappy way to choose a camera system. Especially when it isn’t necessary for most types of photography🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial bokeh-y look will become stale as social media gets flooded by smartphone pics with fake shallow dof. And smartphones are getting really good at it :)

I do have the Pen mini to use as a fun tiny set up though😁
Thanks for watching🖖
You are right David, I to traded up from my Sony tools and went to Lumix with the GH5S and GH6, not looking back 4/3 is fantastic in many ways. I do more video than photos but still do both happily
Thanks, I love the system. I’m looking at Lumix for a dedicated video body next I think🖖
Haha, that sounds familiar although my lottery win camera is Hasselblad flavoured😂
I’m yet to try all of my 35mm glass on the EM1 mkii so I’m gonna be giving them some attention now we’re finally in spring.
I started my photography career with apsc and then full frame and now I’ve landed on Olympus and genuinely love the m4/3 system. Thanks for watching 🖖
Well, that pretty much sums up my feelings about Olympus cameras😁
Exactly! Use what ever camera you enjoy 🖖🏻
Thanks for watching, Alex. Have a good one mate🖖
I have 2.8, 1.8 and a T0.95 lens in my kit, nothing limiting about that since they let in the same light as ff, but each to their own 👍
Subscribed.. .😁 Just because of my love for Olympus / OM system....👌
Thanks a lot. Hopefully you’ll grow to love my nonsense and stick around. I mean, I seem to have a near endless supply of nonsense 🖖😁
@@DavidFlowerOfficial sure will...😆😆😆
Olympus does not own the cripple 🔨, even their PEN line has no crop in 4K
I think Canon has the monopoly on the cripple hammer 😂
Thanks for watching 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial You may be right, whoever wants to use the cripple 🔨 would need to pay license fees to Canon 😂
I think we’ve been in the realms of incremental upgrades for a long time now. The Em1 mkii since the 3.0 firmware update is a fantastic camera🖖
Yeah it was absolutely click bait, but it sounded better than ‘Em1 mark ii - 2 months later’ or something lol
The EM1 mk ii is awesome and as I pointed out in a recent video, the dynamic range thing is mostly misunderstood and in some cases just intentionally wrong as on paper even the EM10 mark ii has more dynamic range than practically every canon dslr up to the 5d4 and even some of the mirrorless models like the Eos RP.
Yeah the gh5 looks pretty much perfect if I were to get a bit deeper into the video side.
@@DavidFlowerOfficial I think the thing I really wanted was an external audio input (which the GH5 has) so I didn't have to spend so much time syncing separate audio files, but for now I'm happy plodding on the way that I have been as far as video is concerned.
Yeah I usually record into my zoom H1n and sync in post, but this entire video was recorded in camera with my little Boya shotgun mic
Cheers.
Yes I have absolutely no regrets, in fact I added a GH5 to the m43 line up to cover me as a main video camera and second photo body (since my youngest lad pretty much laid claim to the em10 mkii)
Regarding the original 4/3rds cameras I haven’t gone there yet but I intend to since I’ve heard to many good things about them to ignore them 👍
@@DavidFlowerOfficial E1 E300 E400 E500 E620 E5 - those are the interesting 4/3 cameras.
@@luzr6613Sadly my 4/3 lenses slowly develop faults, mostly electronic, that are impractical to fix. Impacts usability of classic bodies.
My opinion is that an image is to be enjoyed for its overall aesthetic, which is why I enjoy using old manual lenses so much🖖
I bloody your videos David funny honesty and Stukeley a note with me .I have had the same experience. I follow a great photographer on you tube called Martin Castein he's an award winning pro but like you hrs different very enjoyable yo watch.
He borrowed a Pen ep 1 olympus of a friend, shot some street stuff in London loved the format .I saw that vid ..Worth watching by the way..so I brought one to try still have it ..then brought the om em5 mk111 love it so much great cheap glass ...sold all my heavy Nikon gear £3000 worth no regrets
Bloody love I meant
I really like Martin’s videos and like him I like to use gear based on it’s capabilities, not how trendy it is.
Thanks for watching, Keith. Have a good one mate🖖
hi dave im new to the cameras i bought the em10 mkiii, can you recommed me a lens for street photography please
Nice video
A reply to the title of the video before I even watch it.
No. You didn’t 😂
Correct🖖😁
Sonys are shit to hold and not fun to use. 100%.
I “upgraded” a Lumix GX80 to an a6300. So much regret. I now re-own a GX80 and still use it on occasion
I quite liked the a6300 for video, but with the ergonomics of a brick I’m happy it spent most of its life on a tripod
@@DavidFlowerOfficial haha. True on the ergonomics. I preferred the Lumix for video cos of the ibis and I never shoot log anyway. Plus it can be hacked for CinelikeD.
The kit lens of the Sony was pretty poor too
Just...i love you and this video 🤣💚👍 I think the same 😎
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Thanks for your insight!
@@JezdziecBezNicka Yeah absolutely. As soon as the software nails the natural focus fall off of a fast lens, it’s gonna be much harder to see the difference🖖
I use full frame because that's a logical option for one who still also shoot with 35mm film. My main gears are Nikon and my backup gears are... Olympus. Still have a few OM1s, OM2s, and OM10s that are fully functional. Fine compact cameras but "unfortunately" Olympus decided to pick smaller format for the digital camera system.
Sorry, me again . OM-D E- M10 mark ii, good condition with 14mm-42mm lens,£250. Fair, good or bad price, do you think?
From what I’ve seen that sounds about right. The body often goes for £150-200 but I’ve also seen them above £250 body only 👍
