    Great overview of the different types of electric motors. What type of electric motor do BLDC motors belong to?

    • @Electric-Motor

      BLDC motors belong to the group of AC motors. They are characterized by the fact that they have a block-shaped or trapezoidal control. BLDC motors are often used for small pumps or actuators. The electric motor type used is usually IPMSM designs with concentrated winding. Another common naming for BLDC motors is EC motor, which is the shortcut for electrically commutated motor.

    sir we would be very grateful if you could explain hybrid axial and radial flux motor that is used in keoingsegg car

    • @Electric-Motor
      @Electric-Motor  2 года назад

      Hello Grayson, very complex question. So Koenigsegg uses an axial flux motor because the installation space length is very short. This is a main advantage of axial flux motors compared to normal radial flux motors. But the biggest disadvantage of axial flux motors is the complex lamination of the stator to reduce the losses in the laminations. That is why compound material is often used, which is not electrical sheet but pressed powder. Sounds good, but the losses are greater for medium to high speeds. Therefore it is not often used. However, for very high speeds, the losses in the electrical sheet are greater. It is not the mechanical speed that is important, but the electrical speed. Since the Koenigsegg motors have many poles, the electrical speed will also be correspondingly large. So the use of compound material makes sense. Funnily enough, the market leader for this compound material comes from the same country as Koenigsegg ;-) This is probably not a coincidence. Hope I could answer your question Grayson?

      You probably also want to control the speed of the motor, right? Because then you need of course a motor controller which regulates the voltage. The cost difference between a motor controller for a DC motor and a bldc motor is very small. So maybe it would be more worthwhile for you to use a bldc motor which would have the advantage that your battery will last longer. • @Electric-Motor
      @Electric-Motor  2 года назад

      Thanks for your question, you have to differentiate between the motors for the main spindle and the axes. For the main spindle you need a very high speed smoothness. This means that there is no speed variation. This is best achieved with a SPMSM with a distributed winding. For the axes of the machine tool, servo motors can also be used if the transmission ratio in the gearbox is high enough. These are then IPMSM with a concentrated winding, because with these more torque can be achieved. Hope I could answer your question?

    Yasa motor used by Ferrari SF90 as well

    • @Electric-Motor
      @Electric-Motor  3 года назад

      Hello Mr. Maggini thank you for your message, we have planned to make a video on the topic of "best motor for an electric vehicle".
      The best electric motor for a sports car would be to combine several types of motors, as each has its advantages and disadvantages.
      But this is very complex and expensive in terms of the special inverter and the software needed for it.
      Therefore, it is better and easier to use at least two different types of electric motors for a sports car.
      This is what Tesla does, for example.
      For example an asynchronous motor and an IPMSM with a lot of reluctance torque.
      It is important to design the electric motors for high speeds to increase the power density, so very good bearings must be used.
      To achieve good efficiencies, at least one of the drives should have a switchable gearbox.
      In the Porsche Taycan, for example, a two-speed transmission is used.
      Special attention must be paid to the cooling of the electric motor, as the standard solutions are usually not sufficient for the high power densities.
      Are you more interested in hybrid sports cars or pure electric sports cars?

    • @Maggio100
      @Maggio100 3 года назад

      @@Electric-Motor Thank You for the answer, very appreciated.
      It should be great to have a detailed analysis on pro/cons of gearbox for EV, for what I know the Taycan is the only EV with a gearbox and other brand discarded this solution during the development phase (e.g. Rimac and Tesla), choosing instead a more powerful motor with higher rpm.
      I’m interested of everything is cutting edge, both for hybrid or pure EV.

    • @Electric-Motor
      @Electric-Motor  3 года назад

      For hybrid sports cars, the electric motor should be designed for high torques instead of high speeds to compensate for the weaknesses of the combustion engine in the lower speed range.
      That's why Ferrari chose Yasa axial flux motors, because axial flux motors are good for producing high torque.
      On the topic of electric sports cars:
      Tesla is clearly focused on high volumes and mid-range vehicles.
      The system architecture and the additional effort for a switchable transmission are not insignificant.
      Therefore, the low-cost sports car solution is two drives with different ratios and the maps of the electric motors should complement each other well. So that the electric motor with the highest efficiency is always used at the current load point.
      For gearboxes I would always choose a spur gearbox as it is more cost effective and can achieve a higher efficiency.
      However, the planetary gear is of course stiffer and requires less space.
      I think Audi is going the right way with a combination of planetary and spur gears. However, at the moment without a shiftable gearbox.
      But we are only at the beginning of the electromobility :-)

      You are asking exactly the right question, thank you very much. When choosing an electric motor you should make sure that the electric motor has a small current ripple and that the phase current is as low as possible. Therefore the DC-link capacitor can be made smaller and less power semiconductors (MosFETs/IGBTs) are needed. This saves costs and space for power electronics.

    I wonder if it's possible to construct a motor with both the stator and rotor both using permanent magnet ? so essentially part of rotor and stator are heated above curie temperature, so a portion of the ring lose its magnetic property. Only a pair portions of the rotor and stator are cool below curie temperature, so there will be a torque between the two section. The heat is move via heat pipe similar to what a gpu cooler used (44 kw/m-k thermal conductivity, diamond has only 1.3 kw/m-k, since heat pipe use evaporation phase transition to move heat instead of convection/conduction, so it has much higher conductivity). So effectively you can use convert heat directly to motion. Effectively a motor that actually doesn't mind heat, in fact it would operate the best if the surrounding environment is around the magnet's curie temperature, so you can quickly switch magnetic field on and off via temperature. ** although maximum RPM of such motor might be lot slower than pure emf based motor, assuming heat travel slower than electricity.

    • @Electric-Motor
      @Electric-Motor  3 года назад

      Sounds like a very crazy idea. Still, I must admit that the idea does not sound unrealistic to me, but a bit impractical. How did you come up with the idea? And for what application should you use the principle?

    • @keenheat3335
      @keenheat3335 3 года назад +1

      @@Electric-Motor I was reading some article about magnetic transistor for memory storage that use curie temperature as the mechanism to toggle on/off magnetic property to store bit information. That got me thinking if this mechanism can be use in electric motor as well, in a situation where both the rotor and state are permanent magnets (so effectively they are like magnetic bit on a larger scale).
      Normally in an emf base electric motor, the energy from battery is used for motive force of the rotor and the rely signal mechanism to direct the rotor's turning direction (the 3 phase ac current), with heat as a waste product, and you also need waste more power to pump heat away. Quite a lot of energy wasted. So I was thinking if we can directly convert heat to motion, these waste heat can be recycle.
      The second part is most heat pump (assuming the input/output temperature delta is very small) by design have coefficient of performance of 2 ~ 3, as in you spent 1 J of energy to move 3 J of energy via compressing the fluid medium. So in this case, the heat source to power the rotor will be coming from both the environment and the electric pump wasted heat. Effectively the electric power in this case will be acting only as the rely ac signal only, and the majority of the motive power will sourced from the environment. So the assumption is that assuming the heat pump has COP of 3, and the heat to motive force conversion have efficiency of at least 33%, The net energy efficiency excluding heat energy from the environment should be 100% and greater than any existing emf based design (if you include both environmental heat energy and the input electrical energy to run the heat pump you would have lot less than 100% efficiency, so no breaking 2nd law of thermodynamic on the system level there).
      Now I haven't fully understand the mechanism behind curie temperature enough to even estimate the energy efficiency from heat to motion. It's possible that the efficiency is so low that it's not worth it on a system level. But the main assumed advantage for this motor system is should have higher energy efficiency than emf base motor, since it taking both the environmental heat and the electrical energy as the motive energy source, as oppose to emf base motor where electrical energy is the only motive force with heat as the wasted by product. Assuming this system can pass the first efficiency hurdle, and the mechanism is not so complex enough that it overcome the "benefit", it might be able to extend the range of electric vehicle beyond the current emf base motor limit (we're about 94-97% there, not much room for improvement imho)
      **assuming the vehicle is operating in a hot climate with plenty of ambient heat energy.
      *** the heat pipe thing was mainly there to move heat around quickly since even with liquid cooling, the heat flux rate/unit area is extremely slow compare how fast electric move. And since most heat pipe is optimize around a narrow range of temperature, and we basically want to toggle between on/off state of the curie temperature and not deviate too far away from it. So heat pipe become the perfect mechanism to move heat around fast in this narrow domain application. Granted this is just all pie in the sky back of napkin calculation, real life version of this idea would probably encounter many unknown and make this design useless.

      Hello, first of all thank you for your question. Synchronous reluctance motors with permanent magnets are a good solution to increase the power density of in synchronous reluctance motors and the efficiency of the motor is no longer so dependent on the air gap. However, by definition, a reluctance motor does not have cogging torques because it has no magnets! Therefore I would count a PMSynRM to the IPMSM group. Even though the proportion of reluctance torque is probably higher than that of additional permanent magnets. What is your opinion about this? Could such a design be mapped into a CAD system and "structurally" investigated one way or another to a definitive conclusion?

    Now with more tighter efficiency requirement manufacturer are looking to replace induction motor with higher efficiency one. Most of them switch to PMSM. But in the long term the demagnetisation will be an issue. It also cost much more for PMSM than induction motor. I'm researching about possibility to replace SynRM motor to appliance like industrial fan. But so far I do not see small SynRM for such application. Most of them are in KW size for industrial application. My question are;
    1) Is it possible that SynRM can replace induction motor in household appliance in the future?
    2) Is it possible for SynRM to operate with lower voltage? (24/48V). I have never seen this kind of voltage runs with SynRM motor and kinda wonder why.

    • @Electric-Motor
      @Electric-Motor  3 года назад

      Thank you for your question. I have been allowed to analyze a SynRM for 12 volts with a power below 1000W, so I know the problems very well.
      Regarding your second question, the problem is not the voltage but the air gap, which has a great influence on the efficiency of reluctance motors.
      The smaller the motor, the smaller the air gap should be. Small pumps and fans usually have to be very cost effective. Compliance with tolerances also becomes more expensive the smaller the air gap becomes.
      To achieve a high efficiency a SynRm should be built with a distributed winding. The implementation of a distributed winding for a small pump or a fan would make the electric motor longer.
      Therefore, for small electric motors, one relies on a concentrated winding and a PMSM.
      I know manufacturers have tried it with an SR motor, however, that did not work out so well.
      To answer your first question, I think it will be long term in the direction of a SynRm with permanent magnets.
      For what power are you looking for an electric motor?

    • @ming6842
      @ming6842 3 года назад

      @@Electric-Motor Thank you very much for such insight reply! So if the major challenge in reducing the size of the SynRM motor is the air gap, what are the 'economically ok' size you think it is achievable for today's technology? (like down to which motor size where you think it is should not go for SynRM anymore)
      And if SynRM rely on tight air gap like this, does this mean that it frame has to be dust proof (fully enclosed)?
      Thank you again for educating us !

    • @Electric-Motor
      @Electric-Motor  3 года назад

      Sorry for the late reply! It is strongly dependent on the size of the electric motor or their bearings and their quality. For small motors up to 1kw is a lower limit at 0.35mm. Reluctance motors should be used only where their advantages can be clearly exploited, for example, a high temperature resistance.

    • @Electric-Motor
      @Electric-Motor  2 года назад

      If you reduce the number of turns, you reduce the magnetic flux. If you use an inverter, the reduction of the magnetic flux due to the change of the number of turns can be compensated by a higher phase current. This will of course increase your ohmic losses. Do you use an inverter?

      You can build an ac motor with 2 terminals plus and minus but you have to connect an ac current to it. Most induction motors are built this way. I don't understand what you want to do with the brushes though. Because as soon as you use the brushes to commutate the current it is a DC motor and not an AC motor anymore.

      Oh that's a good question. Large companies usually have very good engineers who also have excellent and very innovative ideas. However, in order to implement innovative ideas, you always have to take a risk and that is very difficult for many managers.
      But you can't blame the managers, because most of them have never developed an electric motor, so it's hard for them to estimate the risk.

    Ich finde die Aussage "vollständige Übersicht" im Titel und die Aussage "vollständige Über alle Typen von Elektromotoren" ein wenig anmaßend.
