figured this out with anby pretty early on. helps a lot when facing some of the big mech ganks.

Nothing to do with role or rarity, it's solely attack type (slash, pierce, strike). Although the mechanic has technically been removed from the game since CBT, it's kinda still in it?
As per the ZZZ wiki page on Specialty and Attack Types:
Slash
-sword/knife attacks
-projectile deflection
-relatively fast attack speed
Pierce
-long range
-relatively fast attack speed
Strike
-heavy attacks (kicks, punches, hammer, etc.)
-moderate to slow attack speed
That said, Corin, Soukaku, and Piper all belong to the slash category but can't deflect projectiles. Presumably because their weapons are very unique and are slower compared to traditional bladed weapons.
It's probably why they essentially removed the attack types from the game despite them technically still being there.
