@@EndlessPencil oh I don't, I've never owned a hamster. But I felt like using newspaper as an example because I've heard of people having done it before. Absolutely not a great thing to do though, I agree with you 100%
bin cages of the right size are actually good enclosures, just make sure to provide enough bedding and different tunnels and things for it to play with, and a large enough wheel
In future wet soils and lightly press then let dry mostly before introducing the hamster- this allows the substrates to bond and makes stable tunnels😁👍
The little hamster is so adorable popping through the other end of his tunnel with his little face all covered in dirt. Not to mention, the image of his little bum and tiny tail as he digs further into the tunnel. So stinkin' cute ❤
I did this with gerbils. They reverted back to being wild and I never ever saw them. I could hear them at night but at any other time they were in their burrows and would not come out!
Now that I’ve seen this, it seems almost cruel to keep a hamster in any condition in anything less. My deepest regrets to the hamster I failed to keep as a child.
Fun Fact : Did you know that hamsters live about 3 to 5 years if well taken care of ? you also need to feed them the right stuff like grains , cereals , nuts , seeds , etc. you know things that the similar nutrients in the wheat they would eat in the wild . Did you know that 5 years in Human years is 150 years in Hamster years ?
it is definitely cruel to do anything but what is being done in this video. the majority of humans suck balls. the standard needs to change. but it wont because "its too much money to do this for every hamster" I hate humans
By creating a natural environment for your rodent it teaches kids how they would act and live in the wild. Adding safe plants allows the rodent to eat healthier and offers them what they'd have in the wild. Better than seeing the hamster run on a wheel or sleeping all day. Adding a little natural jungle gym would keep it entertained.

It looks so weird being dirty digging in dirt and its because im used to seeing them in cages with that generic material people always use. I like how unaturaly (its a good thing) natural this looks. Dont plan on getting a hamster but this will be good information if i ever get one, or if a friend gets one then ill send them this
If i ever seriously think about adopting a hamster, I’ll definitely make a habitat like this. Just seems righter than the plastic straw or wooden chips you usually see…
Both are bad, you dont want to even use either for any kind of rodent. Bedding is much better because its like dirt, they can burrow in it provided you give themm enough of it. It also wont affect their lungs like most wood chippings will.
I had a similar build for my gerbils when i was a kid and used to spend hours on end watching them burrow. They'd dig along the acrylic edges so you could watch them at work, then they'd take all the straw down and sleep in there. Good times
I think this is what they need Natural dirt! This is so smart :) the hamster looks like they are having so much fun. I think hamsters get so bored with the store bought bedding and it’s probably so uncomfortable for them sometimes. But with the dirt the hamster is digging new holes and exploring! This makes me so happy 😀
I don't know almost anything about you, this is the first video of yours I have ever watched but I am really happy and proud to say that you are a beautiful and considerate human being. I wish we could all find the time to see each other the way you see your hamster.
We took in a Syrian for the last 8 months of his life, he was rescued from a boys room by a friend of our daughter who saw him neglected, and she didnt really want a hamster but took him out of there for his sake, then gave him to my daughter. He was our first hamster. A very tidy little fellow, fun to let him crawl around on your lap, and fun to watch run around on the floor. We didn't use that ball thing, we just made sure he couldn't get out or in anything and he went scurrying around. Very cool. Eventually he fell ill, even though we gave him the best of everything, and he died in my hands. Rest in peace, Tony Tissue Paper.
They really are cool little things! Some soldiers got hamsters in Korea, even though they're not allowed to have pets. I ended up taking one when they had to get rid of it, because sergeants don't get their rooms checked very often at all. He was a cool little dude! When I left, I gave him to another soldier's kids. They had him for along time!
From watching this it's clear that hamsters have a strong natural desire to dig and form tunnels. It seems like providing something for them to do this with is pretty important to them. 💖
I’ve never seen a hamster so happy haha made my day this is what we should do as pet owners try to mimic the natural habitat I bet they’ll live longer if there happy and less stressed
I used to keep gerbils like this, but used peat. At that time peat was readily available and if you damped it as you put it in then let it dry, it set solid and didn’t collapse. Pretty neat.
@Ziegler look, diy hamster maze just said that for fun,and you should see his channel. He tortures these beautiful creatures by making them stressful mazes. And he would never give his hamsters a home like that.
I prescribe this channel for my psychotherapy clients who have anxiety. Nearly 100% of them report that it helps. Thank you for sharing these zen treats!
It's weird you say that.. I have Borderline Personality Disorder, and watching this video made me surprisingly calm. Definitely adding this channel now.
I think this is awesome - I’d probably have dampened and compressed the soil a bit to make it more stable and easier for tunnel digging, but I absolutely love this 😊
Omg. I love you too for the simple fact that I've learned so much in the last one month of being a hamster owner I've already ditched my tiny tails home and I've improved my little Hammy's home immensely. Thank you for all these wonderful creative ideas.
Wow! This was wonderful to watch. That little hamster was so happy and had so much fun digging in it's naturalistic habitat. It was very nice to watch this video.
yess! this is exactly what i do for my hamsters. They prefer the soil to bedding, as it gives them the illusion they are in their natural habitats. I do provide another cage with bedding, but i add lots of natural things such as sticks, seeds, and just general stuff you’d find in the woods.
He’s so adorable! This makes me so happy! Look at him living it up in a natural environment. All we see nowadays are fake looking ones. I love how happy he is! The apple tree thing makes me laugh lol, but I’m sorry for your loss. 😂
Add a bit of water to make the soil stick together, and also, with time the grass roots can spread making tunnels much easier. Cool and thoughtful idea!

This should be the norm for keeping hamsters. I mean I don't agree with keeping them at all but if you're going to do it. Then this is the way. BRILLIANT.
Give it a little more time by planting a pasture seed mix in the soil and letting it grow before putting the hampster in. That will secure the soil better and keep it from collapsing. It’ll only take 2-3 weeks to get established.
This is so cute your hamster is sooooo happy. I had hamsters as a kid and they were all free roamers, I didn’t like keeping them in cages but I had little areas for them in my room, when I found out where they pee I just placed a doggy pee pad in that area and then I found out their nesting spots and checked up on them daily, at night they would run on top of me because they figured out how to climb my bed xD. Makes me want to cry, I miss my babies soooooo much
I have guinea pigs that free roam. They can’t climb things but it is such a joy when they walk into the same room as you. I always found mine next to the fridge as they know food was in it.

Just seems righter than the plastic straw or wooden chips you usually see…
Ywah
Memento Mori
Plastic straw?
Both are bad, you dont want to even use either for any kind of rodent. Bedding is much better because its like dirt, they can burrow in it provided you give themm enough of it. It also wont affect their lungs like most wood chippings will.
What plastic straw? Most people use paper bedding
I had a similar build for my gerbils when i was a kid and used to spend hours on end watching them burrow. They'd dig along the acrylic edges so you could watch them at work, then they'd take all the straw down and sleep in there. Good times
so, you could see them burrowed down under the dirt?
@@mmedeuxchevaux yeah! They'd always dig around the edge of the enclosure for some reason so you could see them at work, it was fascinating
@@FishnetChicken cool!!
I think this is what they need Natural dirt! This is so smart :) the hamster looks like they are having so much fun. I think hamsters get so bored with the store bought bedding and it’s probably so uncomfortable for them sometimes. But with the dirt the hamster is digging new holes and exploring!

I used to keep gerbils like this, but used peat. At that time peat was readily available and if you damped it as you put it in then let it dry, it set solid and didn’t collapse. Pretty neat.
