    If you ever do this again, I would recommend watering the soil and using some sort of roller or weights to help stabilize the soil. Then, after it dries introduce the plants and hamster. More stable soil would make for more stable tunnels/dens.

    • @dericksmith2137
      @dericksmith2137 3 года назад +692

      Even simply allowing the habitat a month or so with watering and plant growth. That would help the soil settle.
      But yes, a bit of compacting would have made sense.

    • @MyLuggage12345
      @MyLuggage12345 3 года назад +327

      Yeah, in addition to compacting, just giving it time for the soil biota to develop (mostly fungi) would go a long way to stabilizing it.

    This should be a standard for hamsters, really. It’s definitely more interesting to witness than just watching your hamster run aimlessly on a wheel and attempt and fail to burrow under half an inch of straw. Thanks for sharing.

      I really hate how pet stores market hamsters like literal toys. They make all those crappy colourful cages shaped like castles and hell even a freaking DINOSAUR just to grab attention from children. The child will only ask for the hamster just so they can have the cage, they have no interest in the hamster itself so the poor things will suffer, it’s a really disgusting practice. I really hope someday we get better laws regarding care standards for small pets so we don’t see these garbage cages on the shelves anymore. Germany and the UK have really amazing care standards. The rest of the world should be doing the same.

    btw if the grass roots spread that will keep the soil more sturdy, plant roots hold the ground more firmly in place which is one reason many animals choose to dig burrows under bushes and trees, also for the shade.

    • @dualitylmd5188
      @dualitylmd5188 3 года назад +2

      Also why its smart to avoid a ledge of a hill overlooking the ocean. Because the overhang can give way and you'll legit end up falling down a cliff... the compacted soil and plant life hold it up. Can be a meter or so out that's just grass and maybe a foot if soil. Got a few ppl in my home town while didnt realize and they tumbled down onto the rocks...

Animals like dogs, (some) cats, (some) rabbits or even guinea pigs, need to at least be with another of their species to not become depressed. But in this case, hamsters don’t need to live in partners or herds because it could cause serious trouble. I had a hamster once, it was a Roborowski dwarf hamster, on google it said that these type of breeds of hamsters prefer to live alone. My friend has two hamsters, I think it was a snow dwarf hamster or whatever it was called, and a dwarf hamster. They had to be separated.

One day, two friends and I took Peanuts to "The Sand Pit", a steep 60 ft high hill of sand", about a quarter mile from home. It was a favorite neighborhood hill for winter tobogganing. After just a few minutes of exploring the sandy hill Peanuts began to dig and was gone from the surface in seconds. My friends and I frantically dug with our hands and luckily caught up with Peanuts, about 16 inches below the surface and managed to retrieve him. Didn't know hamsters could dig like that. LOL

    By creating a natural environment for your rodent it teaches kids how they would act and live in the wild. Adding safe plants allows the rodent to eat healthier and offers them what they'd have in the wild.
    Better than seeing the hamster run on a wheel or sleeping all day. Adding a little natural jungle gym would keep it entertained.

    We took in a Syrian for the last 8 months of his life, he was rescued from a boys room by a friend of our daughter who saw him neglected, and she didnt really want a hamster but took him out of there for his sake, then gave him to my daughter. He was our first hamster. A very tidy little fellow, fun to let him crawl around on your lap, and fun to watch run around on the floor. We didn't use that ball thing, we just made sure he couldn't get out or in anything and he went scurrying around. Very cool. Eventually he fell ill, even though we gave him the best of everything, and he died in my hands. Rest in peace, Tony Tissue Paper.

    yess! this is exactly what i do for my hamsters. They prefer the soil to bedding, as it gives them the illusion they are in their natural habitats. I do provide another cage with bedding, but i add lots of natural things such as sticks, seeds, and just general stuff you’d find in the woods.

    Give it a little more time by planting a pasture seed mix in the soil and letting it grow before putting the hampster in. That will secure the soil better and keep it from collapsing. It’ll only take 2-3 weeks to get established.

    This is so cute your hamster is sooooo happy. I had hamsters as a kid and they were all free roamers, I didn’t like keeping them in cages but I had little areas for them in my room, when I found out where they pee I just placed a doggy pee pad in that area and then I found out their nesting spots and checked up on them daily, at night they would run on top of me because they figured out how to climb my bed xD. Makes me want to cry, I miss my babies soooooo much
