I love my Wah wah ..yes it's very busy Harribest and that's what I love about it.
Have you done Isn’t it a pity and Beware of darkness. Both show George’s songwriting greatness
Harri, they had a George Harrison tribute concert after he passed.....I think an all-star band did a version of this song as the finale.... fantastic!!! look it up
Yes it was incredible. There’s like three drummers all rolling together with ringo at the center it was wild.
George was the best Beatle. and hes best songs was Bangladesh, Govinda and My Sweet Lord. a good heart in that man.
I loved isn't it a pity also
Phil Spector produced it. That's the way he intended it to sound...the wall of sound '70s edition. Spector was a genius but you can see why Paul McCartney wasn't too happy with the job Spector did on Get Back. Spector was perfect for AM radio with its compressed sound...but stereo was something that threw Spector for a loop. He even over-produced Lennon's solo album "Rock 'n' Roll". Harri, the live version of Wah Wah on George's Bangladesh Concert album is much better (Leon Russell arranged it and led Harrison's all-star band).
Leon was nothing short of GENIUS!!!!
Spector: "I think McCartney's got me confused with someone who gives a f*@K what he thinks."
I do like the Concert For George version of this song.
I do not agree.
George didn't like what Phil did to this song. It's great regardless, but he didn't like all the added distortion. He told Eric Clapton he could have it for one of his albums, because Clapton liked it. Clapton and Spector are both weirdos, today. Spector is in jail still, for murder, I believe, so he just wasn't a has been producer.
Love George! Very under-rated in his early career.
I agree George was very underrated and did some great stuff.
I loved that 'Dark Horse' album from those days...
I'm for the "wall of sound" !
Amazing
I haven’t listened to this album in such a long time and I don’t even know why. I love it. Thanks for waking up my memories, Scott. I need George’s positivity in these dark days. 🌺✌️
Love this track and the album
I actually love the "distant" wall of sound effect. This is perhaps even the most "rock" of all solo Beatles songs; no need to "bring out the vocals" (he was after all trying to get heard in the background of he Beatles "sounds"). As you say it was "busy," (actually Spector), but he had to do it, and the result was brilliant!
Perhaps the best solo record by a Beatle and one of the best tracks from it.
My favorite Beatle 😄💕 Btw Harri, you nailed the meaning. His "brothers" were giving him a headache lol
I love this song and this album.
Love this song.
On this récord played a lot of musicians. One of the bassists was Klaus Voorman, I believe. He was a friend of the Beatles in the times of Hamburg
I agree with you. I always wished this song was produced better. Such a great song
Another Phil Spector over-production.
Wah Wah was about George's feelings about the BS he was going thru with John & Paul at the end of the Beatles. It was intended to be a loud jam, it is heavy handed due to Phil Spector's producing it with his "wall of sound" technique. In retrospect George said that he didn't like the mountains of layered sounds Phil put on a lot of these tracks.
Well There were alot of Musicians to bring attention to the fund rasing concert, and they all had to participate, so thats where you get all the input of sound, it was fantastic, the 2 drummers, the chorus girls, all the guitarist, it was a classic all those great musiicians on the same stage at once, so thats my opinion.
Also you should do the complete concert for George. It’s awesome
Wah Wah. Giving him a what what ( headache) from John and Paul and the frustration of not getting his songs recorded
Yeah, I think he said at the time that by “wah-wah” he meant headache, so maybe the noisiness of the production is intended to create that headache effect.
If you see A Concert for George after he died, they did this on stage so it didn't have the effects in it. It did sound great. His son Dhani performed in it as well, along with Paul, Ringo, Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne and too many others to name. It was great.
LOVE the "busyness" in this song. For this particular song, it's perfect. You just need to get used to it, that's all.
I agree, I love how "busy" it is. First time I heard it I knew it had to be Phil Spectors 'Wall of Sound' but the only thing I didn't like was how quiet George was in the mix. But I think the 2020 mix is much better sounding than the original and the 2014 mix.
You must check out the bonus tracks on the new All Things Must Pass 50th Anniversary Edition. Alternate takes of Wah-Wah and most of the other tracks will blow you away. It’s exactly what you want.
Klaus Voorman was a friend from - Surprise!! - the Hamburg daze. He did the cover-art for 'Revolver', played with Manfred Mann, played the two-note bass intro on the studio version of 'Carly Simon's 'You're So Vain', and god nose wot else.
I loved this reaction! You're spot on with your interpretation! Here's an interesting fact about this song which gives perspective to what you said: George Harrison started writing this song the day he left The Beatles during the "Get Back" rehearsals (which you can see the moment he decides to leave in the documentary Get Back on Disney+).
From what I found on an internet search, Ringo was the sole drummer on this song.
George's solo career showed how underutilized he truly was. How many more # 1's could The Beatles have had if John and Paul had nurtured George's talents?
I liked George's songs as much as the others.
George was not a victim of bad ol' John and Paul. He was the third-best songwriter in the biggest band in the universe. He did do a lot of whining, though.
@@tombeyerlein3813 Considering that Paul McCartney himself has said the exact opposite, I'll take him at his own words.
@@josephtingley654 The revisionist history of George being the true talent that was held down by Lennon and McCartney is laughable. McCartney is ever the diplomat.
The far away sound was better with some herb dedicated to 4/20. This entire album is an experience not to be missed. Appreciate you giving it a go!
The Spector effect led to some over-engineering it seems. I enjoy the busy, cramped background sounds as it provides nice variety on the album. Try listening to this song again later, Harri; it just might grow on you! The wah-way musical effect is valid; it also means crying like a baby or a disappointed person.
Overproduced or not, I love this song!
I agree 100% with all you say
Seeing this song performed live re: The movie for the Concert for Bangladesh, was amazing! The stage was loaded with talent... with Ringo being one of the 2 drummers. It's been said, this was a message to Paul.
I certainly agree that it was amazing, and I still love to see it. But I'm always disappointed that the guitar solo from this version wasn't included in the Bangladesh concert.
Try “My Sweet Lord” if you haven’t already, as well as “Beware of Darkness”.
I still believe that All Things Must Pass was the best post Beatles solo album. As a 3 album box it was ambitious. And George got some great musicians to contribute. I think that Paul & John hid Georges's talent. They only let George or Ringo have 1 or 2 songs on an album.
he wrote many songs when he was with beatles but wasn't allowed more than just a few songs per album so when the band broke up he had a huge backlog of songs to record.
Thank you, Harri!
This song has been an earworm for me for the last month.
I really do appreciate your honest review! In fact, my girlfriend was hearing it for the first time as we were watching this and she was saying the same exact thing as you were! Lol
Phil Spector's 'Wall of Sound' is to blame, and 'wah-wah' refers to a headache.
That would explain it.
His Material World LP is really good Harri. 😁✌💛
Harri, your opinion is right on the money. Remember that this album was produced by Phil Spector and it has that wall of sound plastered all over it. George himself in later years acknowledged that "the style in which it was recorded" was the product of a certain time and place and he felt he needed to resist the temptation to rework the whole thing. I kind of wish he had!
Some people complained that GH didn't "rock" enough. I listen to this and I ask: "Really??"
Harri. Try to listen to this song at the Concert for Bangladesh Live.
It's his salute to the Wah Wah peddle. Even through he says he doesn't need it they pull out all the stops for it. This I thinks was at the beginning of being able to distort guitars with electrics instead of changing guitars and tuning and amps for the sound. on stage.
George, Eric and Dave Mason are the three guitarists who played on this box set. I believe Eric played the Wah Wah. All Things Must Pass and Band on The Run, my opinion, are the two best post Beatles albums.
I don't know. George used a Wah Wah peddle all through the Get Back sessions.
And Badfinger played acoustics
I don't need no wah wah... thank you Harri for video.
I agree with you Hari and that is why I like other songs more from this legendary album.
There were about 6 guitarists playing on this recordind. The producer was Phil Spector who introduced the Wall of Sound. In the recording of this song, there were probably about 25 musicians on different instruments playing.
And I would agree with John Chu that if you want to see AND listen to a better version of Wah Wah the Bangladesh concert affords a unique opportunity to witness how Harrison/ Ravi Shankar pulled together so many in a short amount of time to support the people of Bangladesh. So many egos could have sabotaged an event of this magnitude. But not this time. To see/hear so many who had supported Harrison and/or the Beatles will always be one of my most treasured live albums. A side note is when watching this specific part of the concert I will neve tire of watching Ringo Starr and Jim Capaldi drumming in perfect unison.
Wah Wah means headache according to George no more legal problems
he was goin through with thebeatles.
The story goes something like: late one night in Hamburg Klaus was sat watching The Beatles playing when suddenly their bassist Stu Sutcliffe decided he wanted to spend some time with his girlfriend before she had to go and dropped his bass guitar in Klaus's lap and said, "it's your turn to play bass now, Klaus". Klaus sat there and plucked the strings. And that was how he started on the bass.
FABULOUS GEORGE & THIS SONG!!! Let's say George wasn't happy with the boys during a session & that's how this song came about. Phil Specter was truly a Genius! You'll enjoy the Concert for Bangladesh too.Wawa is also Goose Native American. But you're spot on with the meaning! Clapton is in there. Cheers Harri 😉
HIGH Harri, another great classic and reaction..... Try this one. Your subscribers will really react to..... "It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding" - Bob Dylan
Yeah you have Phil Spector producer that's why has that Wallace sound kind of effect just like the other commenter said but it is funny because ironically the song is about a sound effect device called a wah-wah pedal and I think there's the double entendre you know alluding to somebody crying it is a genius song though you know I wish I would have been able to pick this one out way back in the day I would have been all over it I mean I used to always sing this one it always stuck in my head when I was a kid but that was because of the lyrics that were sis so f****** a larius okay Harry
You are not offending anybody just sharing your honest opinion, and that is very well appreciated 👌👌
Now my opinion, since 'Wah-Wah' can be interpreted as a headache or the pedal that alters a tone to create a different sound, that effect you mentioned reveals or the headache for so much noise, or the excessive sound produced by the pedal, I think everything was very cleverly accomplished. Anyway, there is a version in which you can listen to his voice more clearly, you can type 'Wah-Wah (Session Outtakes and Jams) (Take 1)'. Hope you enjoy!!!
eric on the low register wah guitar, george on the high register and also on slide. badfinger, george and maybe even peter frampton on acoustics. billy preston (organ), gary brooker (piano) bobby whiltlock (elec piano) maybe gary wright later overdub on something, Voorman, I think star and gordon but maybe white on drums
its the effect because its the effect its the pedal its the wah wah
I'm catching up!! 😂❤
you are listening to the band that backed Delaney and Bonnie. That band included harrison and clapton and the band cept Duane Allman, that became Derek and the Dominos. Add in Leon and some other backups and you have it. The same group minus Clapton and Harrison also did the Mad Dogs and Englishmen Joe Cocker tour.
It is a little dense and blurry with the sound, I always assumed that it was an artistic decision but sometimes things go wrong. It’s a triple studio album which is a huge undertaking for a solo artist, even a Beatle. Maybe try “Beware of Darkneas” from same album.
Phil spector was responsible for the sound
Hi Harri you should check out George Harrisons Taxman
I still think much of the enormous success the album "ALL THINGS MUST PASS" had with people is due to the "wall of sound", even though Harrison himself said he didn't like it !...sorry, Harri.
Such a great song and album. So many amazing songs. George was storing them up and when The Beatles broke up he had enough to make a triple album although the third record is really a jam. It’s popular to discount Spector’s Wall of Sound recording algorithm but to me it makes the album. These songs benefit from the complexity and big sound of the arrangements. I love this album but not the naked version. To each their own I guess.
Ringo manning the drums, with Billy Preston on keyboard.
I second try the live version from the Concert For Bangladesh, and still hoping you'll do his tribute to Lennon "All Those Years Ago" with guests Ringo and Paul and Linda McCartney
Yep to John Chu - its Phil Spector's "Echo" he loved. You should watch Martin Scorcese's "Living in the Material World" documentary about George. They talk about it and give you detail into the recording. Its a really cool part in the documentary. George hated the echo, he actually didnt like the recording at all
Yeah, very catchy.😂
tRY TO CATCH THE LIVE VERSION OF wAH wAH on Concert for Bangladesh. Even better than studio version.
I love this song! The harmonies do some really innovative things with their different notes. It always reminded me of a train going by, then at the end, it fades into the distance. However, I don't think it was mixed well. I'm like you, I think it's too busy. Greg in TN 😀
Here is everything you ever wanted to know and then some about Wah Wah
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wah-Wah_(song)
I kind of like that weird "tunnel sound" effect...Weird and spacy...
The "Cry Baby" Wah-Wah pedal was a popular guitar effect pedal of the time. I completely agree that the "wall of sound" production just creates an obscuring, murky sludge for our ears. Don't try this at home kids. It does do a good job of recreating the experience of sitting at a concert in a sports arena being bombarded at high volume by a terrible sound system.
HaHaHa!Try comparing this version with the concert for Bangladesh version.
All they have to do is raise the vocal track a few dB to cut through the mix.But the reaction is accurate the song is like youre in a room listening to a stereo that's in other room.
Spector Wall of Shat sound
Going to have to go back and check on earlier or later mixes/remasters (and obviously, the original, I hope?), but I have to agree with most on this page that it's down to Phil Spector. Also echoing others here, do check out 'Concert for Bangla-Desh' and 'Concert for George.' Great song, loved it and 'Beware of Darkness', which always makes me cry out of both sorrow and gratitude I suppose, since first hearing them both on '...Bangla-Desh.' Still, 'All Things Must Pass' is an all-time great. top-tier album, imo. Cheers, mate.
Ringo was going off the chain
Bobby Whitlock played piano on Waa Waa said the 2001 remaster is better than 2021 50th annversary mix.
Yes. Specters the wall of sound. You should have reacted to Bangladesh 😊no disrespect. But when I come across an Indian person I refer to George's songs. But just like in the America.. it's s timeless music gone on by
.. an oxymoron😊
It's very "busy" because it's Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound." It's good on some songs but not others. On John Lennon's "Rock & Roll," Phil literally locked himself in the studio with a gun. He was crazy! Some songs turned out well but other's weren't as good with that effect. John didn't want it do over-produced.
He spoke to openly about Pauls death (the replacement) it got him killed
Gotta check out Allentown by Billy Joel and Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day
Klaus Voorman is on the bass
Sorry but being George, his degree of production, however overdone is to be enjoyed, respected as he wanted it for this song as with all his music is a remembrance of who he was. If only half the world could aspire to his level of humanity.m, this planet would be so peaceful. Just my personal opinion people. I loved George
harri I think of the noise the adults make instead of talking in the Charlie Brown films. Wah-wah lol. Yeah I think it means crying essentially. Don’t need to hear you crying about whatever and making a big ish of things.
I prefer the Concert for Bangladesh version.
Harry you need to listen to the album start to finish. Phil Spector produced and in my mind he muffled it’s greatness. He kinda did it to long and winding road with all the added background voices and instruments.
you should check out the doc
George also hated what Phil does.., I have exactly same filling as You...xxx Ron ps. I think Klaus Wohrmann plays bass...and wah wah means what You say, you're genious. And guitarist is Eric
Wah wah was you're giving me a bloody headache and was directed towards John and Paul. It was produced by Phil Spector (wall of sound) which i never cared for but the song itself i love.❤
Phil Spector’s production was a muddy mess on this song as it was on much of the “All Things Must Pass” album. His time had come and gone already, but Harrison and Lennon were strangely enamored of him (as they were Allen Klein) at that time.
In the notes to the remaster even George Hartison disliked and regretted this Production and similar of his All Things must Pass songs. Maybe a reprise with the Bangladesh concert version Harri
There is one thing about Harry if you actually heard the vinyl version or like a really high quality CD maybe like a gold CD or you know whatever the 16-bit CD or even if they've somehow luckily released it on Blu-ray if you get a real high-resolution version it might sound a little bit better it wouldn't sound as muddy because yeah there's a lot going on but the thing is with a lot of versions being in MP3 format take compress everything and now it's all just a murky mess but I think if you heard the vinyl version you'd probably be impressed that you could actually hear all the different parts a lot better and they'd be a lot clearer because he don't listening off the internet you're probably getting an MP3 format with your absolutely horrible but maybe not I don't know what source you're using but it is something to think about okay man
I hear you harry, something isn't quite right in the sound or recording of this song, try The Art of Dying of this same album
"Over-produced" is the word you're looking for. Phil Spector shoved so much into one groove it ended up sounding like audio mud. So much echo it's hard to hear the lyrics.
I hate Phil Spector's production on this.
A Georges martin production would of been better ...
I guess you had to be a teen in 1970
Even as a teenager in 1970, I realized how horrible the Phil Spector production was on this otherwise splendid album.
Not my cup of tea, at all. George, who I normally love, missed badly with this song. It's not quite as horrible as Paul McCartney's, "Temporary Secretary", but it's close. I nearly had to turn it off, it was that unpleasant on the ears. I always skip over it when I play this otherwise great album. Still a thumbs up for the guvnor, for his customary candid reaction. And no offense to brother Scott, I usually dig your picks.
This is a great song. Not sure what you're talking about.
@@fishhookism I'm obviously not alone. Harri thought the song was ruined by the mix and the distortion.
@@Cosmo-Kramer This is a great song, and made even greater by the 'Wah Wah' production of it, which hammers home the point of the overall lyric. As Harri said, "I love the melody, the bass and the guitars." Pure genius production if indeed it was intentional and not just routine Wall of Sound.
@@JK_Clarke Harri was politely picking out things that he liked, that *would have* made the song good had it not been ruined by the grating distortion and the vocals being buried so deeply in the mix. I agree with him 100%.
You can thank Phil " THE KILLER " Spector for that it took a long time to like it I have a copy of it clean and bright and it's not cluttered CHECK OUT THESE FROM ALL THINGS MUST PASS. APPLR SCRUFFS AWAITING ON YOU ALL RUN OF THE MILL SEE HOW YOU LIKE THOSE KLAUS VOORMAN PLAYED BASS SAME GUY WHO DID THE REVOLVER COVER GEORGE WROTE THE SONG Wah Wah was written by George when he quit the band during the Let it BE thing and went home and wrote it and your right it's about the bitching that was going on during the Let it BE thing so VERY GOOD MY FRIEND LONG LIVE THE BEATLES AND I THINK THEIR MUSIC WILL MAN I KNOW PEACE
