As an aussie, we are getting bent over by GW. Gone are the days where the stores were full of people. Cheaper to buy a good resin printer and printing your own army's. Like heroesinfinite just released there 3d print skaven army today and it looks so much better than gw models
Problem is warhammer/games workshop has more incentives to sell their battle force boxes direct to customer instead of handing them out to hobby stores.
Fact: in AUS it's $450 which is ridiculous!!

Yeah, actually the first launch box in YEARS I’m going to get is Skaventide. The people who are playing it, right now, are having fun.

@CaptinCrofty tbf the NDA doesn't stop people being critical or objective. I'm sure there are some people who would be more favourable because they got a free box but I've seen a few where they seem to be pretty fair in their review. Some even criticising some things in the box like the way certain models fit together. But overall seems they're happy because the contents in actually good. Clearly we won't know for sure until general release though.
I own an LCS and you're dead on. Prepare to hear more stories about pretty outrageous tactics from GW regarding this launch soon.

Our LGS was selling dominion boxes for $120, which is pretty cheap for a GW box

I remember the hype on the Dominion Box. Everyone had to buy one and they did. 6 months later those people were trying to unload them admiting to FOMO and store shelves were full of them. Even still today.
if you dont buy from retail you buy direct where the ptofit margin is larger.

I’d be all over this box if I wasn’t already invested in 40K. The skaven appeal to me so much but I don’t know when I’d ever play the game because I only get to play a wargame once a month or so.

The only thing i bought this year (so far), was a 5man box of the new SM termies. Otherwise, i just haven't had the money, nor the will to really keep on with this hobby for a variety of unspoken and spoken reasons. Now, $260 for a new edition boxset that i MIGHT play one game of? Nah, i'm good. I'll wait a year, and pick it up on Amazon for $100. If i'm that hard-up for something in the box, i'm sure i can find a proxy STL and print it for ALOT cheaper. 4 years ago, i'd of been SUPER-stoaked for this new box set. Funny how the economy changes out hobby time.

We have never gotten free copies of anything from GW, nor do we want them. Their NDA along with their non verbal expecations are egegious IMHO.
I am getting mine from my flgs with slight discount. I love the box and prefer any fantasy to 40k. Plus spearhead is a great idea and product. That said AOS just isn't as popular.
That depends on where you are. Where I live the AoS scene is more active than the 40k one. By and large you’re right. Globally 40k is more popular. But AoS isn’t unpopular by any means.
AoS isn't remotely as popular, if you want this you're gonna be able to get it.
I’d say GW thinks it’s popular, or they NEED it to be popular, so they don’t have to admit they were wrong about killing off WHFB.
TOW sold out in minutes on launch. Things are still out of stock online, 4-5 months on.
I think GW wants TOW to fail, so their precious son AOS can keep going.
Otherwise they wouldn’t have pushed back the Dwarf release for 4 months.
At the rate they’re going, we might see all the relevant factions released in 2-3 years?

For me, the general problem with Warhammer is that there is too much too fast. I cannot get excited for anything any more because I have such a backlog that even if a box comes out and it looks amazing, my first thought is no long, yes I want to buy, but I really do not need this. It feels like only yesterday that I bought the Indomitus 40K box. Since then I bought the AoS Dominion box, the HH Age of Darkness box, the Killteam Octarius Box, the Kill Team Nachmund Box, the MESBG Osgiliath Box, the Legions Imperialis box, the Kill Team Nachmund box and thats just the major boxes. And most of these models remain unpainted. Many not even built. When 40k Leviathan released, I just didn't care. Now that Skaven tide is releasing, I don't care. And when they brought back the old worlds, I didn't care. In fact, Old Worlds is a perfect example of where they are releasing too much too fast. They brought it out around what, Jan, Feb this year. And before they have even released all the factions they want to release, they are already, 5-4 months later revamping AoS. Why? Surely a lot of AoS are currently having fun with Old Worlds. Will they really be that bothered about a new edition of AoS if they are deep into Old Worlds. And if they do go back to AoS, then Old Worlds will take a hit again. How many fantasy games does Warhammer need to release? I just don't know why they keep releasing new games and new editions when its a detriment to the current slate of games

Before you buy this argument, realize the argument is that the savings you are getting by buying Skaventide over buying the individual pieces is the basis for the headline of AOS Skaventide is set to fail. The real title should be GW continues to screw over game stores due to massive deals on box sets that are GW online only.

Great analysis! I fully agree, you took a rational approach and went over your assumptions (50% avg, 25% under performing, 25% over performing). It’s not perfect but it’s as good as it can get from an external perspective.

Does it hurt? Knowing that AoS at launch despite how so many hated it, it was still more popular than WHFB was even in to prime. It also continues to be more popular and grow stronger.

No, I’m completely with you. This isn’t sensational. This isn’t blown out of proportion. This is a rational breakdown of things Games workshop has done with the proof. I get that maybe you think folks are too hard on them however, this is criticism in its fairest form. If you don’t believe me, ask your local game store how they feel about this whole saventide thing.
The plastic and cardboard are pennies, yes. But not the metal molds for the plastic injection machines. Or the injection machines themselves. Or the pay and benefits of the designers who thought up of, designed, developed, and produced the data files for the minis on computers. Or the software that runs on them. That's the real cost of the products.
