    The lyrics to this song rival the most heart-wrenching in any song - filled with longing and sadness. But interesting that the last lines of the song are framed as questions rather than statements, lending a sense of hope amid the melancholy. Great stuff.

      I agree,I find this almost unbearably sad and wistful.....as so much of Novello’s music is, not in tune with modern day fashion but so reflects the sad history of the times, so many young lives lost. This version beautifully played , not too heavy on extra frills and trills a charming ,perfect performance.

    I am glad this song is getting attention. It is truly an excellent exponent of the British talent from this genre and time in the 20th century. Great melody and lyrics. And really magical piano part/orchestration.

      I agree, I am in 80s and I cannot get through this song without having my eyes fill. I love the piano in this performance, it is perfect not too over ornamented with runs an trills. This is a deceptively simple melody that is all the more piercing for being unadorned.

      @judithmarianne 7 лет назад +9

      To me it speaks more of the unjust class system where the 'downstairs' people had almost no chance to climbed up socially and economically. Their lives would always be tied to their masters, forever unable to decide their own courses. They would never be 'kings nor queens'. I agree with you, the music in this movie is achingly beautiful.

    Haven't listened to this song in years. I was watching a "Frankie Drake Mystery" on PBS, and there was a line in it about the male character being a king and making the female character his queen. My brain was whispering to me, "there's a song you with words like that.” Finally, with a bit of concentration, I realized it was "The Land of Might-Have-Been." What a divinely beautiful, bittersweet, and oh so hopeful love song! It's a wonderful song that you can actually sing, unlike today's so-called songs. You can feel the passion in your heart, which just bursts with every word and note. Ivor Novello composed some wonderful music, and obviously the British think so, too, as they present the Ivor Novello awards for songwriting and composing ever since 1956. I’d love to hear some other singers and even choruses perform this song ♥️

      Apparently, in an interview, he admitted that surprisingly he was not a huge fan of his singing voice (at least publicly), given that he did work as a “singing waiter” in drama school, which was apparently a really embarrassing experience for him. Then again, the real Ivor Novello himself wasn’t a huge fan of his own singing voice and never really sang in public either. I heard someone on a video of hushabye mountain in Italian for chitty Chitty bang bang that had they made that movie today (or made it into a miniseries) that they would have him as Caractacus Potts.
