Probably the best prosthetic work I've seen in modern films. The best part is that the make-up doesn't have a trace of Colin Farrell. Combined with the acting? Amazing.
That’s a huge sweeping statement. Practical and digital effects both have their place. There are heaps of examples of invisible CG/VFX in major films and TV shows that fly under the radar because of how well executed they are (like the “live action” dog fights in Top Gun). It’s not a competition. Practical effects are fantastic, and the artists should be celebrated. But the same is true for CG/VFX. The artists in both worlds can do incredible work IF they’re given the appropriate time and budget.
@@quntface1518 really.... Alright. Willy Wonka, Alien, Predator, This Right Here, Original Batman Movies with Keaton, Star Wars Characters (Original) And More I can't think of at the top of my head. But yett they aren't better. Like don't get me wrong, CGI could be done right... Avatar, Pirates Of Carribean are pretty good examples, but.... Can you think of any more😂🤣😂🤣
@@WhiterunGuard001 I can think of countless examples. Basically every major blockbuster of the last 20-30 years will have some level of VFX and/or CG. The real issue here is that when CG and VFX is done well, the audience often has no idea is exists. People’s understanding of CG and VFX is either big monsters, space battles, or just really bad CG. But that’s far from the truth. You’re listing a couple of movies with very clear CGI usage. Both were great. But they were very stereotypical in your face used of CG and VFX. How about the “live action” dogfights in Top Gun Maverick that everyone raved about? People praised that movie for how “real” it felt, thanks to the “all in camera” dog fights, and the total lack of CG… Except most of the dog fights were actually full CG 🤷♂️ Many of them were filmed for real initially, but most were then replaced with CG sequences, or modified/extended in some way. There’s a RUclips video called “Down The Rabbit Hole” that touches on this very subject. He sheds a LOT of light on this stuff (including the Top Gun VFX breakdowns). It’s well worth a watch. As a VFX artist myself, I’d always say that the most impressive CG/VFX is the invisible stuff. It’s the set extensions that the audience swears were totally real. The crowd extensions/replacements that nobody bats at eyelid at. Again, almost any major blockbuster of the past 20-30 years will have SOME level of CG/VFX in. In fact, even Oppenheimer had invisible CG and VFX. Admittedly, it was limited compared to most modern films. But it was there. DNEG did some outstanding invisible VFX work on that film, and it should be applauded and celebrated, rather than covered up altogether. The Revenant is another great example of invisible VFX and CG. There’s some stellar work in that film. From the bear, to the removal of the horse handlers in basically every shot with a horse, to footprints in the snow being added and removed, to set extensions, sky replacements, trees, you name it. It was all done for the right reasons, and to an incredibly high standard. Going back to the “golden age” though, the movie that got me personally excited about the world of VFX wasn’t something obvious like Jurassic Park (some great use of early CG there though, and arguably, some of the CG actually stands up better than some of the animatronics at this point). But no, it was actually Forest Gump. The VFX breakdowns for Forest Gump are well worth a watch. There’s some absolutely beautiful use of CGI and VFX there. Realistically, any major movie today will likely have a healthy sprinkling of VFX, and often CGI. Crucially though, when it’s done well, you’ll never know it was there in the first place… until you see a “VFX breakdown” pop up on RUclips for that film that you swore was entirely in camera. It’s honestly such a shame that people’s understanding of CG and VFX is the examples where budgets were cut, and the end results suffer as a result. It’s the stuff that you DON’T notice that’s most impressive.
