  • To pass your road test you must apply the parking brake when parking. Watch the video to learn why. CDL IN-CAB Air Brake CHECKLIST: www.smartdrivetest.com/cdl-ai... SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► / smartdrivetest

    For the purposes of a road test when parking, you MUST apply the parking brake. If you do NOT apply the parking brake, you will be unsuccessful on your road test. Examiners want to see that you know how to secure the vehicle against inadvertent movement.
    And traffic professionals know that in North America, approximately 80% of drivers have automatic transmissions and do not use the parking brake when parking the vehicle. It is easier on your transmission if you apply the parking brake, and then put the transmission into park.
    For those in the world that are driving a vehicle fitted with a manual transmission, it is imperative to apply the parking brake and put the vehicle into the lowest forward gear.
    And finally, for those driving CDL vehicles, never, ever leave the driver's seat without applying the parking brake. For veteran CDL drivers it would seem a bit foreign to NOT apply the brakes when leaving it parked. And if you're on an incredibly steep hill, you many want to chock the wheels in addition to applying the parking brake.
    Good luck on your road test.

    I've grown kind of fond of using the parking brake, even in an auto. No extra movement of the car (unlike with just the parking "gear"), and I find pulling the mechanical parking brake handle oddly satisfying.

    RIck I`m from Romania , today i had my driving license for the second time ( first time had no clue how to do anything and had no idea you existed got a total of 119 points in 12 minutes ) Today on the other hand i did it buddy i was right there 44 degrees celsius outside and i almost nailed everything i had only one mistake when turning from a side road to a highway after yielding i had to place the car straight on the right most lane (we call it first lane) and i had half of the front wheel on the second lane , this was my mistake . The exam took 48 minutes of driving 30 minutes of traffic driving and 18 minutes doing 12 left turns 8 right turn a u turn over a trump railway a 3 step turn and a parking in a very very tight spot also had some time to go threw extremely narrow spaces so the examiner ( who is a high i believe 4 star police officer ) saw my left and right distance appreciation . I`m really proud of myself struggling with this for over a year ( in my country you get an appointment after 3 months every failure means another 3 months wait time and more than 300$ in driving hours ) . So basically thank you kind sir for learning newbies how to drive your videos were inspirational to say the least and the "mirror signal shoulder check" was playing in the back of my mind all time during the exam . Good job mister Rick August ( i`ll keep watching your videos passing the test doesn`t mean i have the skills to do it right , still need some tips :D )

    My parents have automatic transmission cars but when I park on a hill, I pull up the parking brake. Yesterday, I drove the car one block before realizing I still had the parking brake on. Do you think ot could compromises the effectiveness of the brakes if I did that? Like warp them maybe? Also, so do I put the parking brake on while I have my foot on the normal brake pedal, before i put the car in PARK. When I take the parking brake off, do I take it off before of after I turn the car on and put it in drive/reverse? Don't know if my questions make sense.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад

      Hi Brendan Leonard - Thank you for your comment and query. There probably isn't any damage to the brakes if you left the parking brake on for only 1 block. Also, you should put it on a bit harder, that way the car won't move unless you release the parking brake. And yes, apply the foot brake, apply the parking brake and then put the vehicle into PARK. For releasing the parking brake, apply the foot brake, release the parking brake, and then put the transmission into gear. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Been watching a lot of your videos to prepare for second my road test. My examiner said that I barely failed my first test and to practice a little more. I was wondering if I should apply the hand brake before switching into park? Or switch to park first, and then apply the hand brake? Also, do you know if the you get points deducted for not using 8 o clock and 4 o clock hand positions on the road test? I find 10 o clock and 2 o clock more comfortable for me! Thank you!

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад

      Hi Chris L - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and query. Apply the hand brake and then move the transmission into park. The position on the steering wheel is not a huge factor, so long as you have both hands on the steering wheel for the duration of the test. But you don't have to have both hands on the steering wheel when backing. Good luck on your second test. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Thanks Rick for the reply! The only things my Examiner noted I did wrong was when I was backing out the parking lot, I didn't back out enough before turning so my instructor said hypothetically, if a car were parked on my left, I would of hit it. The other thing my examiner noted was I didn't lane switch properly. She wanted me to move to my left lane. There was a lot of traffic coming and as I was checking my blind spots, I moved a little into my right lane. I will be studying your videos to strengthen these areas that my examiner made note of. Thanks for the great videos!

    Speaking of the parking "gear", found in auto-cars. Curious, is there a reason why manuals don't have that, with the pin-system?

    • @bricksforwheels5206
      @bricksforwheels5206 6 лет назад

      Great video as always, as I didn't know about that (the parking gear) before.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад

      Hi bricks for wheels - Thank you for your comment and query. Standard transmissions don't need a park because it is direct drive, and to move the vehicle when it is gear you have to turn over the entire drivetrain - axles, differential, engine and transmission. An automatic transmission is driven by hydraulic pressure, so is not direct drive. Therefore, it has to have a park to lock out the drivetrain. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Back when I was a kid, my mom and dad had this old Jeep Cherokee that needed a new transmission.... Well one day while I was in school they went to eat at Dennys and parked the car in front of the building and where I live dennys and the parking lot are on a bit of an incline right across from the mall. So after they finish eating they come out to get into the car but they notice it isn't in the parking spot anymore. Their initial reaction was that somebody stole the jeep but my dad looks towards the mall and the jeep is sitting in the middle of the intersection with nobody in it. Cars are honking their horns and trying to drive around it because apparently it slipped out of gear and slowly crept away. Moral(s) of the story: always pull the parking brake and get your transmissions fixed

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +1

      Hi tza18005 - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and brilliant story with a great moral. Yes, those older standard transmissions were prone to popping out of gear. Hi Nikki Morales - Thank you for your query. Unfortunately, if your vehicle doesn't have a parking brake, it's not roadworthy, and you won't be able to take a road test in that vehicle. You'll either need to get it fixed or find another vehicle that is roadworthy. The examiner will do a mini-pre-trip before taking you out on your test. I heard that using the parking brake during winter is bad as some components can freeze together, so people driving manuals just leave it in gear. Is that true?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад

      Hi Evaldas256 - thank you for your comment my friend. Having the brakes freeze in the applied position in the winter has not been my experience and I use the parking brake all the time. If there were wet conditions and then you parked the vehicle overnight in sub zero temperatures there is a possibility. But down to -20°C I have not heard of that. Below that temperature there is a possibility that the brakes could freeze. Large commercial vehicles are more prone to having that happen. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note.
