Cleaning Forgotten Children's Graves

  • I clean old children's graves, that were abandoned for decades.
    The action of this video takes place on an out of order local cemetery, which is not having any new burials, but people still come and visit a lot of graves there. There is a rather large portion of abandoned graves on this graveyard, that are overgrown and sometimes barely visible. I seek out graves without name plaques, or sometimes even markers and that lack any recent visitor activity, as flowers or candles. Graves that are clearly abandoned for a long time and nobody did anything about it. Given this situation, I don't feel obliged to seek a permit or anything like it, because nobody cared for so long, so why should they now. As far as I know, cleaning is not illegal. If I would be reconstructing some tombstone details with cement or something, that would be a different story, so I don't do that.
    On the quarter that I start the video with, we have children's graves from at least a half century ago and older. Most of the graves on this quarter were not visited by anyone since forever, but some people, me included, light candles on those abandoned graves sometimes, but they don't clean them like I do here. It's just a good will gesture, like, whoever you are, stranger buried in here, may you have a great afterlife, or at least that's what I think when I do it.
    The weather was very cold and it was 0 degrees Celsius or 32F, with sun making a great lighting for filming. The mud on the tombstone was frozen to the surface and I couldn't scrape it off completely clean. The cleaning agent just needed some time to work and it was a bit cold to use it anyway. In post production, I noticed how sloppily I rinsed the last grave, as I was too preocupied about getting the right shot. I seldom write scenarios or something and usually just hit record and go for it.
    The little bird was my Nevertheless, I like to think, that it was that child that the grave of I was cleaning, because it makes me feel the beauty of the circle of life at that moment, rather than thinking that the Robin came just to eat, which he did, and that's fine but he was very curious about me aswell, which I managed to capture on video. At times he was very close to me, like at hand's reach. I could swear it was that child. Life is more fun this way.
    I will revisit those graves soon and will shorten the way too long crosses, that I had no means to cut then and it bothers me since. I would like to gear up better and find some really challenging grave to clean. Meanwhile, I have a few other ones already spotted, so there will be more of this grave cleaning/restoration stuff later on Martin's Graveyard.

    This actually put tears in my eyes. Back in 1975 when I was only a couple of years old my mother gave birth to my twin brothers, who were born to soon. One lived for five days the other lived four days. I imagine years from now when nobody remembers them that somebody like this will come along and think of them for just a moment. Thank you for what you do.

    Nice guesture cleaning up the graves of wee ones.
    And FYI. The symbolism of seeing a Robin. Ultimately, robin symbolism teaches us an important spiritual truth. That is, robins, a sign from Heaven, help us realize that even through a simple deed, we can all help alleviate the sufferings and misfortunes of others.
    Wow. Seems appropriate. Thank you for this.

    Thank you Martin, that was a blessing to see that someone cares for these forgotten little ones. My father was the only surviving triplet in 1932, we have visited his brother and sister many times when we visit the state he was born in. I would like to visit them again, but time will tell if we get back there again. It was wonderful seeing the care and love that you put into this "project", one can only hope that when we are gone that there will be those who have the interest in keeping the past in touch with the future as you are doing!

    Thank you for your kindness. I used to tend a little girl's grave many years ago. Her mother never used to visit the grave, so I done what I could. I spelt out her name in stones and edged the grave in them too. Just stones I collected from the cemetery, but it looked better than nothing at all. My own parent's grave has some weed control fabric and then some ordinary ground stones over the top. It actually looks rather nice and I feel it is more environmentally friendly looking. Using what is there anyway, but with weed control fabric to stop weeds growing on the grave itself.

      I tended one little girls grave since I was 4 and planted flowers that lasted for over 20 years there. I much more prefer stones and moss as a tombstone and think about making a little prototype cemetery of my own design.

    Very nice video. Taking care of the ones who can't help themselves. I'm not religious at all and yet I think the parents of the child are grateful you fixed up their child's grave.
    Too bad you can't find out the back story about the child. Telling their story one more time is like cleaning their grave.

    I see so many graves untended and wish I could help out but were not legally allowed to where I live unless the family gives permission or something growing over to your own families grave. It's a shame. I also have a bizarre question regarding graves. All graves seem to face the same direction I believe its north or south. I found one grave when I was on a walk recently that wasn't In line was right against a fence and was facing east or west. I am terrible for directions sorry. What would be the reason for this?

    • @MartinsGraveyard
      @MartinsGraveyard  7 месяцев назад

      I didn't ask anyone. I just did it and will do it again in the future. I never thought about the direction of the tombstones. In Poland one row can be facing one direction and the next one the other.
