I agree and perhaps I won't. I got a lot of responses when I first examined the modified chassis to try it out though.

Good position to be in, having two to make a "best of". Don't know which way you'll go, but, if I had to bet, I'd bet you'll go with, as original as possible. Those mods just seem kind of odd. One way, or the other, you are lucky to have a Baby Grand. Look forward to seeing what you do with it.

I wonder why they incorporated AVC (AGC) on the Philco 96 from 1930, but not the first rendition of the model 90 from 1931? Both used push pull #45s? That was definitely the right decision to get another chassis, far less messing around. Other then maybe the version with the push pull #47s I don't think any 90 chassis is even close to rare, I believe they made over 100,000 sets between all versions and cabinet styles.

I wonder how much different or noticeable the tone would be comparing the models with the push/pull 45' triodes to the single ended #47 pentode output

The single #47 type used the free space to add an AVC circuit. I would expect the class A #47 to have a less distortion than class B #45s. That being said, the 45 version is earlier, rarer and worth more.

@@bandersentv The push-pull 45's would be much more powerful than a single-ended 47 which could produce about 2.5 clean watts. RCA rated the 45's at 12 W in push-pull mode.

@@1mctous True but the speaker is the same in all models so I'm not sure what the real world difference is.

Glad you found an original, I think the hacked one would have driven you nuts to make it work and you'd still need to find original parts too. Can't see the attraction to making the other 'fire up', seems a waste of time as it's going to be very interesting anyway and you have so many projects in need of your TLC way waste time on a dead end?
