Wibble Rugby: How did the Wallabies beat the Springboks? | The Breakdown

- During the Rugby Championship of 2021, the world rankings changed, the All Blacks came back with a bang, but the thing that surprised everyone most of all was something that very few people predicted. The Wallabies beat the World Champion Springboks twice on the trot to announce that they are for the first time in a long time, a side that can show genuine comfort in reaching and staying at the very top table.
But how did the Wallabies side, underestimated and given little hope, deliver such comprehensive victories against the Springboks when even the All Blacks with their magical attack had stuttered? How did they string together four tries against South Africa in one game when the Boks usually concede an average of under one and how did they tear a defence apart that held the best of the home nations to only one try over the Lions series?
Today, we show you the Wisemantel specials, the kicking nuances of Dave Rennie, and the areas the Wallabies targeted, to breach the Springbok line and show to the World that the Wallabies are back, and they would do well to watch out.
Grab a beer, sit back and enjoy. It's a hell of a story.

as a bok supporter i hate that i love this video
I gotta say, its really refreshing having an in depth analysis where Australia comes off well
Reply to Wibble: You mention blocking the man without the ball a lot as a key part of the strategy. Should rugby be more like American football? No!.
I agree mate. Too much pain last World Cup cycle hopefully coming to an end.
Excellent video mate, some absolutely superb analysis. As a bok fan i do feel as though we really didn’t play to our strengths and Australia deserved the win. Those wins really helping elevate Australia rugby and restore a certain sense of pride.
Awesome review. Was waiting for someone way more rugby savy to figure out why the springboks, arguably the best defense in the world, suddenly came undone... IMO once the boks learnt that their system had kinks they lost confidence which is why they seemed so out of sorts... Also believe they are busy trying to work out a new attacking system for next RWC.
Excellent, hope that the springbok coaches watch your videos, and squidgerugby videos. Then the boks will win the next world cup too.
Holy old fuck, your videos are far too good man. I've dedicated 3.5 hours over 2 days to watch and re-watch this analysis, and I'm 24:40 sure that I've understood all you've said and highlighted. 🙃 I get excited when I get a Wibble upload notification, and am always sure to let my wife know that I'll be unresponsive for at least half a day while attempting to digest your content. Thanks so much for the effort and depth of your content, you truly are a gem.
Great video and analysis mate - they have come such a long way since the first one we saw on the Refugees - having watched that I feeling fairly worried about England in the Autumn, with some new faces in the team meeting two battle-hardened and smart teams in Aus and SA.
Excellent analysis mate well done
Thank you mate!
Awesome as ever.
Suggestion: Compress the dynamic range of the video audio before uploading (it should be just a few clicks job). The explosion sound effect, Benny hill music and other parts are headphone killers.
Thanks Dale. Will Google that!
Good to see Australia starting to put things together. They seem to be getting up to speed at just the right time. 2022 could be a huge year, can't wait.
Another great video. Thanks for all the work you put in, your content is brilliant.
Awesome stuff, really enjoyed that
What an interesting watch. Amazing video!
Man i feel like ive been to Oxford for the day
As always, an outstanding analysis of the game!! 🇿🇦
This is excellent content. Well done
What a wonderful video. Great insight yet again Wibble. Really enjoyed that.
Thank you Carrick. Lovely words said earlier.
Great analysis. I tend to focus on attack and having an old and skillful 10 with a big straight running 12 was my go to explanation. I really appreciate the work you shared. It was the part that explained the stunted attack from the world champs. Thank you.
Pure class this video.
You're analysis of these matches and the tactics used is pretty interresting. Really well done!
Thank you mate! :)
Great work!
Super stuff, as ever.
Love your work mate. First video of yours I’ve watched and immediately subscribed
Welcome to the club mate! :)
Love your work
Fantastic video, friend. Rather surprised to see so many Aus forward passes not pinged, though.
Awesome stuff mate, up there with squidge level or even greater analysis! Subed!
Wow! Loved this video on Australia. Wallabies playing great rugby.
Nice one bro
God damn that was deep analysis....good stuff man. And you couldn't be more right about Wallabies/their fans needing that win. Things were, and still are, to a degree, not looking great for Rugby Union in Aus.
Great video as always - thanks to you and a few other of the rugby RUclipsrs I've finally plucked up the courage to get into coaching. Already accessed the paper you mentioned in this video any others you would recommend giving a read?
If I received nothing else in terms of a compliment, this would be enough. Brilliant that you're starting to coach mate.
As for the link. Bear with me, I'll try and post it in the description.
Excellent piece of analysis, but a minor quibble - you mention James Slipper at around 24:25, but it's actually Angus Bell.
I got them mixed up a few times unfortunately!
Very very Good analysis 👏 can't wait for Australia to come to Africa 2022
Well done Australia - deserved winners & make no mistake the Springboks do not like losing against the Wallabies - my team outplayed twice. We hope you can take this form and level of intensity forward and win against NZ & other northern hemisphere teams.
It was the consistent intercept tries that were making me think we are a long way from improvement but after the the Springboks and Pumas my hopes are high again. I want to play to All Blacks again too but I'm still not overly confident
Really good analysis sir. Cheers
The Stormers had an issue last week with their fitness levels against Munster. Started strong and dropped off. I think the home based South African players are a little off the pace due to a lack of competitive game time. Connacht beat the Bulls comfortably too. ( On a pleasant evening in Galway as it happens. I live 10 mins from the ground. ). It would be nice to see Australia stay at that level of intensity and keep developing that culture. i enjoy watching a tightly fought Rugby Championship. The Springboks will be disappointed in themselves, and take it out on their opposition next year. The All Blacks are the All Blacks. Argentina, i'm not so sure about right now, but they are a proud Rugby nation, so they will come good again.
Excellent analysis you hit it on the nail how Aus defeated SA and well at that which our All Blacks didnt do.
Amazing video! Very happy to see actually someone turning attention into the progress that Aussie have achieved. They are building very nicely and the system of their attack is way more 9 orientated compare to the structure that Cheika used. The only thing they are lacking is the technical skills around the contact area in offense and defense. The devil is in the detail so they are on the right track but still far away
Ha, Wallabies rugby fan with BG name? Congratulations from Springboks supporter with a BG name.🤝
@@velevgv hahahaha cheers!
Top analysis. Slightly frustrating that their plan to change lines to block the kicker was not pinged by the ref as it should have been, and was against the ABs.
Kerevi has just been confirmed to have an ACL tear/injury from 7s and is out for tee rest of the year(Aug 2, 2022)
Cobra Kai is my favourite show too. Been a massive fan since it was on RUclips.
Awesome video. I will keep for my correction.
So stoked for the Autumn internationals. Defence takes on many forms, but England can't keep up with this defence-only bullshit. Sooner or later they'll fight. It's inevitable.
And a video of how the boks beat the all blacks?
Squidge is already on his. I need to get the France video started soon.
@@WibbleRugby man between the two of you, I think the springboks need to sub-contract the two of you.
I've seen some analysis suggesting that due to how SA use their wingers their defensive system is more affected by the 50:22 than most. Could their struggle to adapt through the championship be why they looked so weak defensively?
I touched upon this and do agree somewhat. It puts a lot of stress on the guys in the back field hence Pollard often detaches for back field cover very early in phase play now. But feel they're still getting used to the compromise. Which inherently is an issue, as for their system to work there can be no hesitation from the wingers. Hence the backfield is gonna be prime for good kickers going forward.
If you go back to the start of the Australian down fall, 2002 was because they looked outside of rugby to get impact. Australian alway had a strong back 3 un till they looked to the NRL. Now the NRL players had skill but they lacked the physical punch and determination needed to be a top back 3 rugby player. The other thing was consistency. All backs had no consistency when Mitchell was in charge and it showed and even Henry got it wrong at the start. Hopefully Australian rugby is back on track now
Starts at 13:30
Ok...you finally beat the boks, after their worst performance aince 2018...best thing you achieved in a long time, be happy, I know you were suprised and never expected this to happen. Well done. Enjoynit while you can.
Any chance of getting a link to that paper you reference in the video? Also that was Bell not Slipper in regards to the low key tripping motion
Unfortunately I mistook the two on a few occasions to be fair. Will try to find the link bro. I only have the downloaded file.
@@WibbleRugby No worries - thanks for the video, seriously informative and well put together. Much appreciated!

Here you go mate.
The 'Boks used to be terrible tourists. I thought that was why. Then we saw them play the ABs (game 2) and the real 'Bokke' turned up. They played out of their skins albeit 'helped' by the ABs matching them in the kicks out of hand stats. Hence they weren't run from touch to touch and had the energy to continue with a tighter rush up and spoiler/physical defence.
But there is a nagging suspicion that the RSA management knew they could drop a few World Standing points (play poorly), they had a few points in hand, and could hold their fire till the end.
Nothing above can be reinterpreted as referring to Rennie's input. He is moulding a team, of that there is no doubt. Skill levels and play selection have improved; and game awareness could improve thereby eliminating pointless handovers/takeaways. Mostly 'holding on' as someone 'has a go' and got himself isolated without aggressive support.
The first part of this video is basically - when phase pressure builds it becomes easier to flatfoot outer defenders if they persist with the 'umbrella defence' and IF your basic Rugby skills are better than adequate opportunities will come. Speed still rules a Rugby pitch. _Another reason to get rid of the tactical replacement laws as they tend to suit heavier slugs._ Who are usually too slow to contribute. That's Rugby League's sole contribution, take our addicted pie-guzzling nitwits.
What program is this?! Trying to do it for my local soccer club.
Software I use is Final cut Pro mate :)
The ref was good lol
I don't think this win will mean that much in the long term. They figured out specific tricks that allowed them to beat one "big" team. I don't believe that this means they have an overall strong, winning game plan that will work against all the 6 nations teams (besides ITA) or NZ
Wallabies basically won by playing NFL blocking in rugby and getting away with it somehow.
@S MM Sorry to trigger you like this. Look in all it was well done to the wallabies they needed the win. They knew where to come at the boks game plan and one the day the Springboks didn't adjust on what I think was a traditional off game at suncorp for them. For the record malherbe actually has a good workrate with > 8 tackles per game and is a great tighthead, which seems to cause a bit of jealousy. They did manage manage to plug these wholes for the all blacks game though. notably in the last game.
Cool video. But too many false dawns for Rugby Australia. Culturally they just don't have any backing in Australia.
Double fluke ……….too many home games and no quarantine !😂
In this fundamental game of rugby when you're a forward you supposed to go forward not backwards THAT'S a no no
And this is were Rassies rant video brought up an number of issues SA to close to the truth. On most occasion targeting the gap is only possible with the outer players being in front of the passer, eg the try at 27:00 had two forward passes. What was the lineman watching, his betway balance?
And Rod learn't a great deal from Ian Mackintosh.
The Wallabies also targeted the scrum. How...? They illegally scrumed inwards on the opposite side of where the referee was. Check again and tell me if I'm wrong. That's why the scrum always swung even on the Bok throw in even though the Boks were dominating the scrums.
They were clever not to overdo it, only in important scrums.
Next is the line-outs. Wallabies tackled the Bok locks in the air, just before their feet hit the ground, to cancel the mall. You can see the SA locks feet were always in the air as a result. The referee penalized them a few times but a few went unpunished. Very illegal.
@Mark Morris You don't get i, do you? I said scrum inwards, which is dangerous because it can cause injury to the opposition front row. Scrumming inwards or to put it differently, not having hips parallel to the touch line. That is a basic rule. You now want to cloud the rule with sentimental nuances of collapsing scrums. I did not say a thing about collapsing scrums.
At least you admit about the first test line-out infringements. I appreciate that.
Something that the Boks do, is they have a player stand straight up next to the scrum or ruck in order for Faf to kick and not be charged down. Whether that's obstruction, i dont know. What do you think?
This may annoy a few people, I imagine.
When Australia had a crap scrum, the world teams lauded how strong their own scrums were and how poor the Australian scrum was. Many Wallabies fans would decry the way the scrums were being turned and the blatant scrum ‘cheating’ going on, especially from countries like England. Now the shoe is on the other foot, the complaints have started about the Wallabies.
The only time I have seen scrums refereed correctly was the England vs. Australia 2015 World Cup pool game. The mentality for the Wallabies was ‘All eight push straight’, as a scrum is supposed to be. England tried their tricks and the ref started pinging England for them, leading to the chariot to find its reverse gear and destroying their only attacking weapon. But this didn’t last long and the refereeing went back to the coin toss.
So, now we are where we are. I suppose it is a case of “When in Rome…”
@@greeggreeg I like your comment because it's a comment that stems from observation.
And I love the Romans quote... I said exactly the same thing when I saw the game against Australia. Teams always push the boundaries. Our teams should not complain and just be street smart. When a referee allows something, just do it better.
It's a reflection on the referee and not the players.
Through dirty play basically
