He won the last Championship before the Chase, the fact that he only won a single race likely caused its creation.

This was a tough loss to endure as a Kenseth Fan just like 2006 and like Kyle Busch & Harvick, Kenseth wasn't able to win a 2nd Title.
Motorsports Fan17 even though I'm not a Kenseth fan this still showed how bad the chase format is.

Matt and Kasey ran 1-2 surprisingly often across their career, all the way back to Kasey’s rookie year in 2004. Just sad that my boi Kasey didn’t get the best of that relationship😔
Has anyone even noticed how good the racing was in 2013 compared to this season?
Shows that Gen 6 could have even been better than Gen 4(okay, not that far, but still. Gen 6 was insanely promising).
Watching Kenseth back then, I was never really much of a fan. Anytime he won I would shrug and say at least it wasn't Johnson. But now that he's been gone awhile, I do miss seeing him on track. He was a great competitor.
I seriously love these videos. Would love to see Carl Edwards 2005 and 2008 as well.

Side Note: In 2013 it would've been Johnson either way, but if Kenseth won the title, I would be really happy that Johnson lost a championship because of the chase for once
Also another fun fact: had there been no Chase, Johnson would've clinched the title after Phoenix. Which means for once, the Chase actually succeeded in making a closer, more exciting points race.

@@evannuh-koo-la4054 As it did in 2004, 2005, 2007, (even as much as I hate to say it for that year) and 2017. In other years, though, the Chase really hurt the championship battle, IMO.

Me being my uneducated 13 year old self at the time (shout-out to Carnation for being as knowledgable as he is at his age) never understood how Kenseth winning 7 races wasn't able to win him the championship. Looking back at this season now, it nearly mirrors Ryan Newman's 2003 season (which is ironic how Kenseth was the one Newman was chasing for the championship just 10 years prior) and it all makes sense now understanding the sport and points system so much better now.
Even with that logic Johnson had more wins I think

I really felt bad for Kenseth that year. He had a very strong season that year. I wonder if he would have won it with the playoff format used today.
If they did have the playoff format that we’re currently using then yes Matt Kenseth would be the sprint cup champion of 2013 in his first year with Joe Gibbs

@@bw-leftturnracing7779 I didn't say he wasn't. In the top 3 series of NASCAR in the past 5 years, Truex is the only one who ran well all season and won. However, the fact that Kevin Harvick or Brad Keselowski could've also won the championship simply by finishing one spot ahead of him is absolutely ridiculous.

I think you got something a little backwards. Darlington was the next race after Kansas, because Jason Ratcliff was suspended for the following race after the penalty, and he won Darlington with my Uncle’s buddy Wally Brown on the pitbox.
Great trip down memory lane for me, though. I was a senior in high school for the first half of this season, and me and my best friend debated the race constantly that year.
I forgot that Kenseth had a great season in 2013 he came very close to winning the title that year.
This year was such a bummer. He had the performance but the finishes didn't show it.
Missing Rings:
Bobby Allison 1981 & 82
Ricky Craven 1993 & 94
A lot of people remember Craven for the 2003 Carolina Dodge Dealers 400, but one overlooked part of his career is that that he was a contender for the Xfinity Series championship in the early 90’s.
Dale Jarrett 1996 & 97
Mark Martin 1997.
1996 is most remembered for Terry Labonte somehow beating Jeff Gordon on a strength of two wins to Gordon’s ten, but Jarrett was also very close, losing by just 84 points.
1997 is considered a runaway for Jeff Gordon, but Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin finished frustratingly close behind, losing by just 14 & 29 points respectively.

This was such a fun season as a fan of his. Coming off his last two seasons at Roush which were actually really solid, this was still a pleasant surprise. I mean, he was just leading SO many laps all year long. That Phoenix race towards the end was so deflating...but you won't find many better age 41 seasons than that one.
Matt Kenseth fought like hell especially at homestead but fell short of passing Johnson in the points. Never been a Kenseth fan. Always been a fan of the Hendrick Motorsports teams. Jimmie Johnson was the king of the chase for multiple seasons. Jimmie is the goat!

I don't think many people are that upset when Jimmie Johnson loses, Mark Martin's ENTIRE CAREER is one big Missing Ring.
Kenseth always seemed to be fighting Kahne through his entire career.

I for the life of me can't not understand how bad they were at PIR 2 in 2013. My god how bad can you miss the setup. He finished 7th in the spring race. If had match that finished he is much better spot going too Homestead. What a choke job.

2013 was a damn good season for Kenseth. I always thought it was the Phoenix race that ruined his championship hopes. Being a huge fan of him (and at the time, the only Kenseth fan who I knew) I REALLY wanted him to win, and was certainly tired of Jimmie Johnson winning so many goddamn championships. I can see why lots of people were convinced that Johnson would ruin NASCAR.

It still stings knowing he never won a championship at JGR in arguably the best years of his career.

He at one point was 2nd at points that season and up until Richmond was one of the only people that came even close to Jimmies lead in the points

Similar to Greg Biffle 2005 and Ryan Newman 2003, Matt Kensith wasn't as dominant after the 2013 season.

Note that 2013 Dover race in the chase that Johnson won. Dale Jr lead the most laps that day but missed out road on a green flag pit stop. He would’ve won that race had that not have happened. He also led the most laps at Miami that year but a bad last restart put him fifth and he climbed to third by the end of the race. The reason I’m bringing this up is because the next year of 2014 was his best season for Hendrick.

In my opinion, 2013 was an amazing year! The package was great, racing was good, everything was good (except spingate and Gordon getting in, as a Gordon fan, Gordon was gifted the 13th spot). Sadly, this was the last year of the good chase format....
I wish the 2013/2014/2016 package was still a thing, I wish we still have the chase format from 2004-2013.
As a Johnson fan, this was the best season Matt Kenseth ever had in his career. Hell, the championship battle between Johnson, Kenseth, and Harvick was AMAZING! I even went to Homestead in 2013 to see the amazing battle and a good race there.
Here were are in 2019, shitty package, shitty points format, gay (stage) racing, etc... I REALLY hope NASCAR will be great again soon. Gen 7 and 2021 and the future is a make or break. If the playoffs, stages, and crappy things like pointless aero crap like side force, 550HP and spacers, etc. are still a thing, then NASCAR is 100% care for show-seeker fans than their hardcore NASCAR fans..... but, who knows, time will tell. It will take time to fix NASCAR. When it does get fixed, it'll be worth a wait

i don't think a winless driver not winning the championship counts. that's like arguing Ryan Newman in 2014 as a "missing ring". i feel 2016 is more of a missing ring for Sadler than 2017, especially since Sadler only spent one week not in the top 2 in points in 2016
