@1IdeaAhead actually I've worn a traditional kilt before for a scottish wedding. And I've been hiking in a kilt since late 2010. Main reason... Most comfortable garment I have worn ever, easy to take off and care for.
Helped someone move for a day so I could pull the trigger on a Jolly Roger original by Sport Kilt, sewn down pleats and belt loops.... I am going to wear it to my first day of high school in the fall. That'll be good!
RaulPerez1 hey, thanks for the reply. I took a drive down to sport kilt today and tried a few on, looks like the standard length is good for me. I am 5'7 for reference in cases anyone out there is wondering on a similar fit.
so far I havent had any issues with the velcro. I've worn the kilt for probably 3 weeks worth of usage (ie I only wear it when I hike) and it's seen about a week in the rain. So far I am very happy with the kilt.
Trying to figure out exactly WHAT makes this a 'hiking kilt'? The easy care fabric? The hidden side pockets? Imagine what happens when your buddies figure out it's only held on by velcro! I'll stick with 60/40 fabric, (easy access) cargo pockets, and snaps with a belt to keep it on.
Love the video, I needed some ideas on what kilts to get. I made a bet and lost with friends and now am going to be wearing kilts from Halloween 2016 to Halloween 2017. When i lost the bet My friends got me 3 Sport Kilts, and i now need to get more. I have given up all my pants and will be kilted 24/7 for the next year. On 10/31 i will have been kilted for a week, and i am starting to get used to it, and have found them very comfortable to wear.
How well does that velcro hold? Me and some mates are doing a ultra marathon later this year and want to know if it'll come loose while running for 10+hours
+JessBooty It holds well. The kilt has seen approx. 350 miles on the trail (been injured the past 2 years). I'm looking to take it through a tough mudder in July 2016 - 12 miles obstacle course. No issues with it so far. There's a good amount of Velcro.
probably a bit late. And I am watching your videos for information so I may be wrong. but you may be able to relocate your pocket stuff to pouches on your chest strap. Seen other guys do this. then maybe relocate the contents to your kilt for a day hike or something. keep the videos coming! thank you!
What type of kilt did you used to have? I was thinking of getting the Mountain Hardwear, Mountain Elkommando, although after your video, I'm second guessing myself.
have you looked into trying out one of the traditional kilts? Apparently the modern kilt is tiny compared to a traditional one which was the size of a blanket folded in a certain way look up in youtube "Scottish Clan Warrior Kilt" its a vid of a blonde guy puttin one on,i was actually surprised when i found out i was looking to see if Irish actually wore kilts (turns out thei didnt for geographic reasons unique to Ireland and instead wore cloths called leine-croich) thanks for the vids!
Get a shorter backpack. Normally, kilts are worn at the navel. Of course you can wear it wherever you like and many wear utility and sport kilts lower, but IMO, it looks sloppier.
I do believe it's at my navel. When you see me put the backpack on the hip straps are much lower on my hips. It's a hiking kilt so a hiking backpack is going to have certain features such as hip straps. Also why the kilt is much thinner. Also makes it easier to clean in the stream or lake and wear the next day. I've hiked a 120+ mile stretch with this kilt for charity.
It seemed thin in the opening sequence when I could see light through it. A lot of guys where kilts below the navel for a variety of reasons. Some have guts and they don't want to get something that fits right as the size required probably would make them reflect. Others are more fashion current where people today wear jeans and other waist garments low. It just makes the torso look long. I'm 6'5 and not long legged, so wearing something that low doesn't look right, but I also need something longer. Mid knee for me is 26". I don't hike with a backpack though, but I have worn an 8 yard PV in black watch while hiking. It was under 40, so it was fine. I live in AZ and I wouldn't want to wear it when it's 95 or more out. I might just do a regular sportkilt. There is a St Patrick's Day run in March and they are doing a kilted run to try to set a record for the most kilted runners.
Welcome to 6 years ago.... and BTW I had a mosquito fly up there and bite my sack when I was hiking... so yeah... compression shorts... cuts down on the thigh chafing too.
does it shrink when washed ?
no
perhaps a sporran would sort your pocket issues.

Does the Velcro mess up, or is it high quality? My husband and I are trying to decide if we should buy one or if I should make one for him.
Thanks for the review... Just got a regular Sport Kilt, but now I think I'm seeing a possible second... Happy hiking...

yes the kilt has seen almost 200 miles of the AT. Its awesome!
you said you had the kilt modified to 21 inches. How tall are you? I am short too.
theghostly7 5'4"

Have you taken the kilt on a hike yet? If so, how did it do?
After over 200 miles of trail hiking this thing is still going strong!

so how is it going so far?
If there ever were a bet to lose the was the one
Is the kilt still holding strong after all this time?
Sweet I love my Sportkilt! You'll love it too.
That's it, I'm getting one. Ain't no way I'm going to miss out on that badassery.

Might have to get one of those kilts for my husband. Not sure how he will take it....but might have to get him one anyway...;) c
Now that you've had it a while would you still get it with pockets? How about belt loops?
Thats awesome i cant wait to get mine this christmas. Do you have any experience with the commando kilt?
i was wondering if i could wear a kilt. i looked at there website, and they do sell women's kilts!
I'm sure you've worn skirts. Why not a kilt? Same thing.
Did you have Sportkilt put that full lining in your kilt?
I have a few Sport Kilts. Fantastic product from a great company.

Damn alright thanks anyway. I will get tons of use out of it. Merry christmas to you as well.

Pockets yet. Belt loops is un-needed. Its all velcro unless you wanted to put a sporan on it then maybe belt loops.
@SoulSurvivorX2 Ha ha yeah a man in a kilt is a sexy bitch. My Fiance didn't approve at first... Now she prefers me in a kilt. Thug Life!
That kilt looks very thin.
worked on that twirl for a few weeks*wink*
Sorry no. Just with the hiking kilt. Hope you get a lot of use out of it when you get it! Merry Christmas.
I had the Elkomando first. After I got this... I tossed it.
was thinking about the ninja, lov black
elastic waist? no buckles? velcro? not what i call a kilt.............
Why do Scotsmen wear kilts?
Cuz sheep can hear zippers.
Seriously I am considering getting a hiking kilt. I have friends that swear by them.

Now stop sniffing the white out before the brain damage becomes permanent lol. Great review Raul
@1377stick - it's cool you will come to the dark side eventually. Just as I forsee a hammock in your backpack during 2013..... :-)
You have shorts under that ?
That is wrong..... to begin with.......
Welcome to 6 years ago.... and BTW I had a mosquito fly up there and bite my sack when I was hiking... so yeah... compression shorts... cuts down on the thigh chafing too.
What? Why am I watching this...? I'll never wear a kilt...
@dreamer43061 - Ha Ha would be really embarrassing to be triangle choked out by a man in a kilt :) You'll have to pry my kilt out of my kung fu grip
dude hilarious joke!!
Sweet I love my Sportkilt! You'll love it too.
