    One of the terms I hear talked about a LOT when discussing the Line 6 Helix and other modelers is how they FEEL. In this video I discuss what I think "feel" actually is and how we can assure that our presets have the "feel" that we would like them to. I take you through 3 ways that we could dial things in to our taste. I truly hope you enjoy the video.
    As always, thanks so much for watching...

    Thanks, Jason. I find your sharing on the sag, bias, and impedance insightful, relevant, and extremely helpful. This past week, this "feel" issue was exactly what I was trying to fix. I was working on a song, and my amp just didn't sound like how I wanted it to sound (in my head). It just wasn't right but I didn't know how to verbalize it. But seeing how the sag and bias can be tweaked, that just took the words right out of my mouth. Really appreciate the video, Jason.

    Thanks for another great demo, Jason. Based on this video, I adjusted the Deluxe Reverb preset from your American pack to where it’s now sounding, and FEELING, a LOT like my Mesa Boogie Fillmore! So great to have that tone in my Helix now. Thanks so much!

    This video has inspired me to revisit the models in my Stomp. You just clarified for me how I can have some control over the "feel" aspects of the Stomp that I have been unhappy with. Thanks for this! Very informative

    I had learned about the input impedance only recently from johnnathancordy video and it was a huge revelation. Because in default auto-setting, each pedal or amp you put first in the chain sets different value. Before that, I always strugged with my 5150ish rhythm tone, turns up that when you put a drive before the amp, Helix sets the impedance value on 32m, and you don’t want that. You want a solid 1ohm power (which is default on most modellers) to kick the amp. So only now, after almost a year, I finally use my HX Stomp properly.

    Jason i agree you need to remove the pants flapping physical feedback out of it. Feel to me is about responsiveness to pick attack, touch sensitivity, compression and any lag.

    When I first got my HX Stomp a couple of months ago, I noticed that it did not sound as "Dynamic, Live, or In Your Face" as my old Boss GT-6. As I learned about the Sag, Bias, and Impedance settings, I was able to improve the "feel" considerably. Fingerstyle is a major component of the way I play, and anything that reduces dynamics, articulation, sensitivity, and responsiveness is unwelcome. I almost never use compression, and wish there were De-compressor, De-limiter, and Expander effects on the Helix. 😄

    When I play my rig out I’m always micing my amp in a back room with a good mic on it, no stage noise. I always found my helix to feel more like an amp in front of me than a mic’d amp in an iso cab when they’re both going through the house

    @Jason - When I got my HX Stomp a couple of months ago, I connected its Line Outs to my Behringer UB1202 Mixer. The Global settings on the Stomp are Input = Instrument, and Output = Line. I listen to my gear through my Mixer, and noticed that the Stomp Presets varied greatly in volume. Some were very quiet, some normal, and some were extremely/painfully loud. I decided to "normalize" the volumes to a comfortable standard that would not risk damaging my hearing. I made it so the Stomp volume knob was set to 12 O'clock to make things easy.
    Last night, while using the Stomp through my Mixer (as usual), I noticed that everything sounded much better, more dynamic and "in your face," just the way I like it. I discovered that I had accidentally bumped up the Monitor Control and Main Mix Fader a bit above its normal zero setting on the Behringer. I decided to compare that against the direct Headphone Output on the Stomp. I found that the Stomp Headphone was very low volume. Even if I turned the volume knob on the Stomp all the way up, it was still a significantly lower volume and sounded anemic compared to my Mixer.
    My Stomp Global Settings: Ins/Outs Main L/R = Phones Monitor, Main+HP = Volume Controls. When I "normalized" the Preset volumes, I used the Output Main L/R point in the Stomp signal chain, and adjusted its "Level" slider accordingly, as that gave the most convenient way to adjust the volume without changing any other settings.
    1. Do you think that I somehow compromised the Stomp's Output signal by "normalizing" the Presets as described above?
    2. What should the volume knob on the Stomp be set to so its Headphone Output is delivering a good strong signal?
    3. What do you recommend I do, as the Stomp's current direct Headphone Output volume is about half the Lines Out volume.
    I wonder if this whole issue of "dynamic, articulate, feel" issue is somehow related. I was very careful to check that the difference was not simply due to a change in volume. Thanks

    So, I did something a while back that was partially based on a happy accident I had while messing with my Helix at random, and ye ole split crossover technique. I found that if I put a 121 at 1.5” or a 4038 at 3” in front of a 112 Deluxe or Grammatico (or for some strange reason a Supro 6x9) below 500 Hz, and then put a 4x12 above 500 Hz, the bass response was VERY “amp in the room” through a studio monitor or my Headrush 112. While this isn’t a touchy/feely amp thing, did definitely gives you “feel” in another way-the punch in the chest “amp in the room” feel. I don’t know why this is but it sounds awesome through a Strat with a JB Jr. in the bridge. It actually sounds more like a 1960 T75 than my actual 1960A cab across the volume spectrum. I have an idea as to why but I’d like to hear your thoughts (or a video) on it. My patch is called “90’s Morphology” and even though it had 3 and now 2 stars, it’s had 99 downloads since 1/13/21. I don’t know that it compares at a PowerCab (I don’t own one) but it’s definitely the sound in my head.

    Very informative video. I personally like the idea of putting a compressor to the end of the chain. I use it with really mild settings and it just works. Don't quite get it how and why, but it just works better than without it. Guitar comes better from the mix etc. How ever some times when recording stuff, I might turn this compressor off. Really happy Helix owner and user :)

    Thanks Jason. These videos are extremely helpful. We need to remember that a real amp is cool, but who can carry and afford, a Fender, Vox and a Marshall etc. and EQs, and a myriad of pedals? A great set of analog gear (delay maybe not) and every room will impact your sound, and that needs tweaking. The volumes you can play at will also affect the sound. Having a modeller with the flexibility for me is a great solution. I can also get a good sound for my acoustic which usually sounds poor out of an amp designed for electric guitar pickups. Sure there may be compromises, but if you’re using mic’d amps then they are going through a desk then that’s another sound impact.

    I don't use a comp on guitar. I do that in studio one. I do however use parallel compression with a split cross over on bass.. it's the easiest way to get that heavy split and grit style.

    I always think of 3 things:
    1. Tone = the sound. For instance I like the sound of a Blackface.
    2. Feel = how it feels under my fingers, how the amp responds. For instance I like it when an amp is on the point of breakup and it starts to give some compression.
    3. Expierence . For instance I do not like 4x12 cabs on small stages because when you're standing to close to the cab you can't really hear yourself very well. I prefer bigger cabs because the move more air.
    To get a great tone and feel I find that it is important to really dial in all the parameters of the amp and use good IR's. I use a mastering comp and sometimes a little compression on clean sounds. To get a good experience I use a monitor and put it behind me just like my amp would be and set it just as loud as my amp would be.

    That tad of room reverb is very important too. Otherwise the tone feels unnaturally dry. We never play amps in a vacuum.

    I'm 54 and I've just bought a Helix Floor. My first foray into modelling. The most complex rig I'm used to is a drive/wah/delay into the front of a Marshall 1959. So, I've got a steep learning curve. Your videos are really helping me Jason, so many thanks for that :) I'd be interested to know the following. At the moment, I'm using the Helix through my Mk2 Katana 100w using the poweramp fumction in the amp. I downloaded your recentish Yngwie 2020 preset, but I've found that I get nowhere near the same amount of drive that you do on your video. I imagine, although I could be wrong, that this is due to using the Katana rather than monitor speakers. I'd really love to know any tips you have for using the Helix the way I am, and what general tips you would have for maximising it this way. The Helix is something I wish to use live when we finally come out of lockdown in the UK, and I'm old school in as much as I need some backline experience to my sound, rather than purely through a PA/monitors.

      David,
      Do some research on FRFR speakers. Your Katana is probably effecting the sound. Ive recently got an hx stomp and i was putting it through a blackstar Id60. Then after speaking to a friend he suggested looking at a FRFR speaker that doesnt colour the sound. In the end i went for a headrush 1by12. But there are many alternatives.

    • @davidyates8880
      @davidyates8880 3 года назад

      @@philc5513 cheers Phil. I've looked into FRFR speakers and will no doubt go down that route at some point in the not too distant future. My head scratching is why using the Katana would affect the perception of gain in the sound. I'm using its poweramp function so the tone stack in the amp is completely bypassed.

    • @martiboucat
      @martiboucat 3 года назад +2

      David,
      If you’re connecting to the powersection of the katana, make sure you don’t have a cab block or make your amp+cab to just amp with the same settings 😉
