Yoshinori Kitase should not be on any list of villains. The man directed Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, and X. It was his vision that shaped the evolution of the series that was needed after V. I love Final Fantasy IV as much as the next person, but let's be real, it was VI and VII that were the apex of the series, and despite all the haters I consider VIII and X to be masterpieces as well. The guy is no villain.
The real villain of this story was At Games, flooding the market with horrible Genesis clones. I really like this game, a whole lot, but Gackt's fan character suddenly being one of the most important foundational characters in the FF7 universe always felt a bit fanfiction-y to me xD
Love this game so much. It must be the protagonist. Zack was just a great character, and I love the tone shifts that show you how fucked things really get. It’s a fantastic companion to the original game imo.
I played Crisis Core before I played or knew anything about FF7. So it was cool that I legitimately thought Sephiroth was a good guy, even though he always seemed a bit creepy, he was my favorite character in CC because he was the boss. Then I played FF7...
Oh must have been cool seeing him "come back to life". Indeed, a nice prequel, some people would say it spoils the original but i say if you want to start with crisis core or the remake, do what you want. Did you watch AC too? Just stay away from Dirge of Ceberus lol
So... *Kazushige Nojima* was the writer for Final Fantasy VII, Advent Children, and Crisis Core. He was also the writer Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy X and X-2, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, gave the initial outline for Final Fantasy XIII, and wrote the original story for Versus XIII (and he later helped Tabata with XV with the new direction, but to what extent is not known). He was so involved with his projects, he would do things like writing lyrics for songs, like the opening for FF8 and that Japanese FFX song, as well as write audio dramas for FFX. Do you see where I'm going with this?
When I meant is that a lot of the tone of the SciFi Fantasy FF games can be contributed to him. Director controls all aspects of the game, but it's the writer who sets the tone and shape of a story.
That is both an impressively great and very mixed repertoire. It also explains why all FF games post 7 have a similar tone, or similar themes, except for 9 & 12. ...also stop always doing better research then me haha
rick hunter When Versus XIII switched over to being Final Fantasy XV, he worked with Hajime Tabata and the team to ensure the narrative was still strong enough in its new form. He did help, but didn't had the ultimate control over it. And dumping a story that had 'potentially' great story, and prioritizing getting the game released, is certainly a compromise, but nowhere near a crime. Game development is all about compromises. You need to make a quality experience, but you also need to release it on time. SE management isn't the best, but you need to understand just how long would they have this albatross hung around their necks. Imagine working on a game for 10 years, and still not getting a release because the story isn't "good enough". Tabata tried his best to clean up the mess and get the game running and released.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is without a doubt one of the best prequel games ever made. It excels at both emotional storytelling and fun gameplay. Seriously Square, make a console HD remaster!!!😆😣
Ain't got shit on the Big Boss section of the Metal Gear timeline, though. Between the two prequel games on PSP. Crisis Core is good and will make you emotional at the end, but MGS Peace Walker will make you ugly cry. 'Sing a song' indeed.
Crisis Core has a special atmosphere and in that is a special game to me. If there's a certain kind of feeling that I cannot connect to anything else in my life but some game, the devs must've done great work. That's how I think about Crisis Core. It's got this weird feeling of feeling dusty on a summer night along with some deep deep melancholy. The music was also phenomenal. Not a perfect game, but it's better than 90% of "proper" home console games for sure.

To be fair,it is implied that Genesis once genuinely wanted to be a hero but his wounds,the JENOVA Cells,the discovery of his unnatural origins and his degradation slowly drove him insane,making him a parallel to both Sephiroth and Zack(As well as Cloud to a lesser extent by virtue of Zack`s influence on Cloud just as Zack himself was influenced by Angeal,Genesis and Sephiroth) .Also,when you really think about it Genesis(Albeit unwittingly) plants the seeds for both DEEPGROUND and the personality traits within Sephiroth that would later be personified as The Remnants.
Man it's strange how nostalgic this game is now. I remember having so much fun playing it on my way home from school on the bus. While I think the story is a shit sandwich I can't help but love Zack.
By the time you've finished training up Zack he should be pretty much immune to being shot by Shinra soldiers in the end. They should have had an alternate ending where both Cloud and Zack run into Tifa and start their adventures with Avalanche. Final Fantasy 7.1

I'd suggest any of you to experience compilation yourself. It's enjoyable but to be honest, I remember Final Fantasy VII really well from a plot, to locations and dialogues but I can't remember shit from any of compilation's media. I recall general vibe and plot points but that's it sadly. I wish this project was better as a whole and doesn't have Gackt in it. Thanks for retrospective, Thor ^^
5:00 I don't think you were supposed to get the impression in FF7 that Sephiroth was ever not a creepy dude. He was a secret government experiment raised from birth to be a killing machine by a oppressive, imperialist, corporate state. He was never normal. He was however, publicly adored and revered as a war hero. And there was a point where he was a relatively good lapdog for the government, before he flew off the chain and went full genocidal maniac with a god complex.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the game also flanderizing Aerith's character into the whole "pure maiden" thing as well when she wasn't like that in VII, Tifa was the why emotional one while Aerith was the cheeky bombastic girl, it was a nice contrast to how they both look and I wish it was something square would remember to do with them more often. But yeah, 100% agree with you on this video, love the game, can't stand the stuff you couldn't stand as well
Does it though? Advent Children certainly does turn her into an angel, or a god or whatever, but here she seems like a pretty normal girl with a sense of humor. Then again I couldn't see this Aerith sneaking a dude into a brothel, so they did kind of reel her back a bit, but the way that I saw it was that Zack kinda made her a bit more assertive in that sense. It's why I bring up him coming up with the flower business. As if his gung-ho attitude rubbed off on her. Buuuut maybe I'm giving them too much credit reading into it like that haha

For me crisis core has always been one the best psp games, and the only good thing to come out of the ff7 compilation. Great review and keep doing these videos my dude.
I thought the first 2/3rds of the game were ok story wise, not the best and a bit hard to follow but still enjoyable and with some interesting ideas. But once you get to Nibelheim... dang. It just gets so much better, even with the ongoing Genesis stuff. This game isn’t perfect by any means but still fun to play (I didn’t mind the DMW) and I think its best moments are on par with the original game.
I really wouldn't say masterpiece, even if you called it a flawed one. We could have had a story about the Wutai War and Zack's involvement in that before going off to Nibelheim. Instead, we got Genesis. Genesis really brings it down with just how much of the game's story revolves around him. The story of Genesis was completely unnecessary because Crisis Core was supposed to be about Zack before the Nibelheim Incident. He was a "tragic" villain stu who wanted to fix his injury that wouldn't heal, an injury he caused himself by attacking his so called friends. Not only that, he succeeded, got moar power and then he survived the final boss battle. In addition, he was shoehorned into the Nibelheim Incident, which he had no business being a part of.
Crisis core was in no way about Zack, it was also the story of three inseparable friends seperated by their suffering. Where Genesis was the deepest among the three. As for masterpiece it is one but to each their own
@@personalemail9329 I'm gonna disagree. The whole three friends arc was one of the least interesting parts. Of all of the three friends, only Sephiroth had been established in the first game. If these other characters had been established in the original game, I'd be interested, but they weren't. Sephiroth's best friends were fanfiction characters. They were never established. Of the two, Angeal was (marginally) more interesting because he was Zack's mentor, but connecting him to Sephiroth was completely unnecessary. Sephiroth's BFFs didn't matter, the game could have happened without them. It was one of the things that brought it down. Zack was a metor for Cloud. Learning his story could have been enough for the game on it's own, instead we got Genesis whining about how he got hurt and reciting shitty poetry and being part of the Nibeheim Incident and Angeal telling Zack really generic platitudes. That isn't to say there weren't good things though. I liked the gameplay alright, the music was pretty good and I liked how Zack was the SOLDIER Aerith dated before meeting Cloud. I also liked how Sephiroth was somewhat normal before he went apeshit, but that's about it.

Great retrospect. I have a friend who is a fan of FF (I was shocked to find that, since in my country, all games are either Mario, GTA, Counter-Strike, or DOTA). This game is his favorite, and when I told him I was a FF fan too, he gushed out so much about this game. He has over an 100 hours on it on his PSP. He said he loved it more than FF7. It brought memories when I first met him. I also remember telling about the PSP emulator, emulating it and seeing his jaw drop. Also, I XD-ed hard at 13:52

Looking back at this and it's neat how Crisis Core is the first FF game (and thus the first FF7 game) I finished back in 2010/2011 (I don't remember either late 2010 or early 2011, only that I was first introduced to Zack in Kingdom Hearts BBS on the PSP), only to then have FF7 Remake be the next FF7 game I finished. Going into Remake after Crisis Core (I even replayed CC for a bit) feels a bit rewarding to me, as the minor references to CC that Remake put in makes me happy that I was able to understand what these things mean. The original FF7 is still cool (played the original and stopped at the end of the Midgar portion just so I can do some experiment with both FF7 and FF7R as an experience) but 7R does a great job at Incorporating the compilation stuff to make things flow as good as it does
I think the handheld square games are meant as like a preliminary thing and a moneygrab (in KH's case). But Crisis Core really shined, I hope FF7 remake takes the best parts of it.
I remenber when i first heard about crisis core, it was like "holly jesus fucking christ", the game was already released and stuff, but what really turned me on was the final cgi scene where cloud go after zack , everything was so dramatic and..bloody hahhah i just loved that and i kind still do, so i basically went in to a quest to play the game, because a had no psp back that time and in brazil everything costs a kidney, so a tried to emulate and i did, but poorly, fps rate very low and the fucking music stop's every time a fight that was going on was too long hahhah, well at least i was able to see for myself the ending of the game and the fucking post credit short scene that was sooo sweety.
Idk I haven't played the psp game in awhile so for all I know the sky box you complained about is the emulator. Also the visuals blend better when you're not upscaling this psp game beyond 720p.
Genesis is Single White Female, he first worshipped Sephiroth but then instead of wanting to just fighting along side the hero he wanted to be the hero.🤔
If you head over the Qhimm forums there is a UI mod for Crisis Core. It looks amazing. With that mod and PPSSPP upscaling with shaders, there is really no need for a console port imo.
Okay so, to defend the Angeal, Genesis, and Sephiroth relationship. It wasn't perfect, deffinently melodramatic, and it commits the greatest sin any prequel can by introducing characters who never appear in the thing it's prequel-ing yet who have an apparently major effect on its story. In the case of that last thing, there are pretty easy justifications one could make as to why Angeal and Genesis are never mentioned in VII, though they are somewhat weak: Shinra could've just redacted all the information about that. It's not perfect, but it would explain why it's never mentioned. But anyways, Genesis goes ape in that first fight because he's jealous of the praise Sephiroth gets. Because of his obsession with Loveless, and his wish to be the major hero of that story, he has a hard time accepting that Sephiroth more closely fits the bill than he does. He is also much more aware of his status as a lab rat than the other two, and is made aware before the start of the game of his slow degradation and imperfect nature. Hence his defection, and his seeking out of the man who could possibly find him a cure. Angeal defects after Genesis because they were such close friends, and Genesis basically spilt the beans about his own status as a lab experiment. This causes him to question all of his morals and what he's fought for, leaving Sephiroth the only one left at Shinra. Idk I really dig their relationship personally :) but that's just me.

10:12 that is literally because youre playing on an emulator. as for the ps1 "scale" of midgar, its a perfect circle so of course you can get the whole thing in one shot. its also multiple layers, with both layers consisting of many very tall buildings. the city is quite large, you are only able to navigate a few screens, many of which end in "warp" points that go to completely different areas and are clearly not part of the same area of the map. you also forgot to mention the worst part of the game, levelups and materia levelups are random based on a fucking slot machine, which costs EXP as it auto spins constantly with no fucking idea whats going on.
The leveling isn’t random but everything else is. The game has hidden exp that gives you levels when you get the right amount in the form of a 777 on the slot to make it seem random

There is a great fantastic guy that Square created with long silvery flowy hair that goes by the name of Sephiroth. ;) He can still be calm and friendly at first and nice to Zack and still have his mental breakdown. It worked well in the OG. You don't need Gackt.
Yeah what is he supposed to do for 50% of the game? Side quests with you? You never really got close to him, like a friend, more like an acquaintance and once he lost his mind he beat Zack and you never saw him again(presumed dead). So what would that silver boi do? Do tell me, i'd love to know.
Side Quests with Sephiroth would be awesome ! I mean Seph is a very popular FF character. That sounds pretty neat. Or do missions for Sephiroth as you do missions for Hojo already in CC. Seph can still stay in character as your mentor like figure. Also it could make his mental breakdown later on more tragic.
Only problem is your mentor is Angeal, at best Seph is just an idol or something. My opinion is that if they would scrap genesis they should probably highlight Angeal more. Why he is friends with Seph, they would also need a new reason besides Genesis for him to go rogue. But honestly without Genesis too many holes would appear in the story in multiple places. You cannot just scrap a core component/villain and just replace it. Plus Seph is the opponent of Cloud, Zack needs his own nemesis to overcome.
Great game: crappy its wasnt ported: who buys handhelds aside form children? Good story: takes away from Cloud as this shows he's just a cheap copy of zack...Genesys is crap Im not a Japanese fanboy...BUT! NON-CANON as of the Remake thank GOD. As despite it WAS NICE: The crap villain based on Japanese Pop: the fing hand held release: the once more lowering of Cloud's relevance minus stealing Zack's prowess? 7/10. Flawed Masterpiece? Basically I'd agree: great story: meh design: and undercuts the original game's story: by adding a villians whose role: never pans out. Again: Goodbye Genesys, goodbye Angeal, goodbye Cloud being a zip off...well no...that will stay... Ugh: the more lore for Cloud they make...the weaker and blander he becomes in both personality, growth and story arc.

No it isn't. The combat sucks. The gameplay overall sucks. The entire game is on rails. There is absolutely no exploration. It's an awful game.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the game also flanderizing Aerith's character into the whole "pure maiden" thing as well when she wasn't like that in VII, Tifa was the why emotional one while Aerith was the cheeky bombastic girl, it was a nice contrast to how they both look and I wish it was something square would remember to do with them more often.

Does it though? Advent Children certainly does turn her into an angel, or a god or whatever, but here she seems like a pretty normal girl with a sense of humor. Then again I couldn't see this Aerith sneaking a dude into a brothel, so they did kind of reel her back a bit, but the way that I saw it was that Zack kinda made her a bit more assertive in that sense. It's why I bring up him coming up with the flower business. As if his gung-ho attitude rubbed off on her. Buuuut maybe I'm giving them too much credit reading into it like that haha
that's honestly a fair interpretation, and it's honestly been awhile since I played Crisis Core

Square lost its touch bro, and Nomura is smoking so much weed, i can't understand how hes in charge of the whole FF franchise.
I thought the first 2/3rds of the game were ok story wise, not the best and a bit hard to follow but still enjoyable and with some interesting ideas. But once you get to Nibelheim... dang. It just gets so much better, even with the ongoing Genesis stuff. This game isn’t perfect by any means but still fun to play (I didn’t mind the DMW) and I think its best moments are on par with the original game.

I really wouldn't say masterpiece, even if you called it a flawed one. We could have had a story about the Wutai War and Zack's involvement in that before going off to Nibelheim. Instead, we got Genesis. Genesis really brings it down with just how much of the game's story revolves around him. The story of Genesis was completely unnecessary because Crisis Core was supposed to be about Zack before the Nibelheim Incident. He was a "tragic" villain stu who wanted to fix his injury that wouldn't heal, an injury he caused himself by attacking his so called friends. Not only that, he succeeded, got moar power and then he survived the final boss battle. In addition, he was shoehorned into the Nibelheim Incident, which he had no business being a part of.
Crisis core was in no way about Zack, it was also the story of three inseparable friends seperated by their suffering. Where Genesis was the deepest among the three.
As for masterpiece it is one but to each their own
@@personalemail9329 I'm gonna disagree. The whole three friends arc was one of the least interesting parts. Of all of the three friends, only Sephiroth had been established in the first game. If these other characters had been established in the original game, I'd be interested, but they weren't. Sephiroth's best friends were fanfiction characters. They were never established. Of the two, Angeal was (marginally) more interesting because he was Zack's mentor, but connecting him to Sephiroth was completely unnecessary. Sephiroth's BFFs didn't matter, the game could have happened without them. It was one of the things that brought it down. Zack was a metor for Cloud. Learning his story could have been enough for the game on it's own, instead we got Genesis whining about how he got hurt and reciting shitty poetry and being part of the Nibeheim Incident and Angeal telling Zack really generic platitudes.
That isn't to say there weren't good things though. I liked the gameplay alright, the music was pretty good and I liked how Zack was the SOLDIER Aerith dated before meeting Cloud. I also liked how Sephiroth was somewhat normal before he went apeshit, but that's about it.

I have a friend who is a fan of FF (I was shocked to find that, since in my country, all games are either Mario, GTA, Counter-Strike, or DOTA).
This game is his favorite, and when I told him I was a FF fan too, he gushed out so much about this game. He has over an 100 hours on it on his PSP. He said he loved it more than FF7. It brought memories when I first met him.
I also remember telling about the PSP emulator, emulating it and seeing his jaw drop.

Thanks man. I actually did a sort of retrospective on the Fabula Nova Crystallis before, back in 2014. Though I have been thinking about revisiting it, and including Type-0, and bits about Versus XIII as well. But I doubt I'll be doing any of that soon.

Looking back at this and it's neat how Crisis Core is the first FF game (and thus the first FF7 game) I finished back in 2010/2011 (I don't remember either late 2010 or early 2011, only that I was first introduced to Zack in Kingdom Hearts BBS on the PSP), only to then have FF7 Remake be the next FF7 game I finished.
Going into Remake after Crisis Core (I even replayed CC for a bit) feels a bit rewarding to me, as the minor references to CC that Remake put in makes me happy that I was able to understand what these things mean.
The original FF7 is still cool (played the original and stopped at the end of the Midgar portion just so I can do some experiment with both FF7 and FF7R as an experience) but 7R does a great job at Incorporating the compilation stuff to make things flow as good as it does

I remenber when i first heard about crisis core, it was like "holly jesus fucking christ", the game was already released and stuff, but what really turned me on was the final cgi scene where cloud go after zack , everything was so dramatic and..bloody hahhah i just loved that and i kind still do, so i basically went in to a quest to play the game, because a had no psp back that time and in brazil everything costs a kidney, so a tried to emulate and i did, but poorly, fps rate very low and the fucking music stop's every time a fight that was going on was too long hahhah, well at least i was able to see for myself the ending of the game and the fucking post credit short scene that was sooo sweety.

If you head over the Qhimm forums there is a UI mod for Crisis Core. It looks amazing. With that mod and PPSSPP upscaling with shaders, there is really no need for a console port imo.

Okay so, to defend the Angeal, Genesis, and Sephiroth relationship. It wasn't perfect, deffinently melodramatic, and it commits the greatest sin any prequel can by introducing characters who never appear in the thing it's prequel-ing yet who have an apparently major effect on its story. In the case of that last thing, there are pretty easy justifications one could make as to why Angeal and Genesis are never mentioned in VII, though they are somewhat weak: Shinra could've just redacted all the information about that. It's not perfect, but it would explain why it's never mentioned. But anyways, Genesis goes ape in that first fight because he's jealous of the praise Sephiroth gets. Because of his obsession with Loveless, and his wish to be the major hero of that story, he has a hard time accepting that Sephiroth more closely fits the bill than he does. He is also much more aware of his status as a lab rat than the other two, and is made aware before the start of the game of his slow degradation and imperfect nature. Hence his defection, and his seeking out of the man who could possibly find him a cure. Angeal defects after Genesis because they were such close friends, and Genesis basically spilt the beans about his own status as a lab experiment. This causes him to question all of his morals and what he's fought for, leaving Sephiroth the only one left at Shinra. Idk I really dig their relationship personally :) but that's just me.

10:12 that is literally because youre playing on an emulator. as for the ps1 "scale" of midgar, its a perfect circle so of course you can get the whole thing in one shot. its also multiple layers, with both layers consisting of many very tall buildings. the city is quite large, you are only able to navigate a few screens, many of which end in "warp" points that go to completely different areas and are clearly not part of the same area of the map.
you also forgot to mention the worst part of the game, levelups and materia levelups are random based on a fucking slot machine, which costs EXP as it auto spins constantly with no fucking idea whats going on.
The leveling isn’t random but everything else is. The game has hidden exp that gives you levels when you get the right amount in the form of a 777 on the slot to make it seem random

There is a great fantastic guy that Square created with long silvery flowy hair that goes by the name of Sephiroth. ;) He can still be calm and friendly at first and nice to Zack and still have his mental breakdown. It worked well in the OG. You don't need Gackt.
Yeah what is he supposed to do for 50% of the game? Side quests with you? You never really got close to him, like a friend, more like an acquaintance and once he lost his mind he beat Zack and you never saw him again(presumed dead). So what would that silver boi do?

Side Quests with Sephiroth would be awesome ! I mean Seph is a very popular FF character. That sounds pretty neat. Or do missions for Sephiroth as you do missions for Hojo already in CC. Seph can still stay in character as your mentor like figure. Also it could make his mental breakdown later on more tragic.
Only problem is your mentor is Angeal, at best Seph is just an idol or something. My opinion is that if they would scrap genesis they should probably highlight Angeal more. Why he is friends with Seph, they would also need a new reason besides Genesis for him to go rogue. But honestly without Genesis too many holes would appear in the story in multiple places. You cannot just scrap a core component/villain and just replace it. Plus Seph is the opponent of Cloud, Zack needs his own nemesis to overcome.
Such disappointing game.
