  • Indy 5 isn't nearly as bad as many are saying but it's still far from a great film because of obvious massive changes during production. Seeing it made me believe the reshoot rumors even more and I go into detail about what I believe was changed. MAJOR SPOILERS you have been warned!

People have these weird biases where they're like "movies were so much better X amount of years ago" when they're really just thinking of the ones that stood the test of time. Like, the internet now thinks 10-30 years ago was some kind of golden age of movies. But I was there, practically living in movie theaters. Most of that shit was awful. There were barely any strong female leads when we were growing up, maybe that’s why so many men are crying about it now. They can’t deal with men not being the centre of attention, or the absolute hero.
It’s great that young women are in strong leading roles nowadays. That young girls, our daughters, nieces, granddaughters and sisters have movie heroes to look up to, like we had.

@@Liofa73Men absolutely want strong women. Weak women are mental and neurotic. Men want equal partnership with women we need and rely on women. Men just don't want to be made out to be incompetent morons in everything, especially not to propup bad or unappealing charaters. Its also worth remembering people watch films for entertainment not self flagellation. It's 2023? No kidding, maybe we could see 50% representation of women in the armed services, the police, construction, working on oil rigs, garbage collection or any number of other dangerous, difficult and dirty work men do for society. Women seem happy to want more representation as CEOs but not the unpleasant aspects of life. People like you lack empathy or gratitude for what came before, the past wasn't perfect and you're caught up in a ridiculous binary narrative of women good men bad. Both genders have the potential for bad or good. Have you ever considered what would be left if you took away what men have brought to society? I just want movies to be good, to be entertaining. If they aren't I won't watch them, that simple. I hope you are watching present day movies, because if you don't, who the hell are they being made for?

With Star Wars Ep9, I had the chance to watch it for free and couldn't bring myself to finish the title crawl. I don't mind new takes but if you have to dump on established worlds and characters, and rip them down and destroy them just to launch your own 'fanfiction' I'm not going along with it anymore. You have the pilot say, "this plane can only carry three people," then Indy would sacrifice himself by staying in the past. But that wouldn't work, because Indy could go hang out with the grail knight until he's back in his time.

I thought it was ok, definitely better than crystal skull, though crystall skull captures better the indiana jones aesthetic imo. This movie is a little too long, has many unnecessary plot points but overall a nice theater experience. And if you think about it, if they removed those plot points then what's left? I mean, why did Indiana Jones went to wherever the auction was taking place? Only to retrieve the dial? To prove his innocence? I mean, realistically speaking it didnt seem like it was going to be hard to explain he had nothing to do with the murders. Much less trouble than going though all that sh*t. And then he simply accepts he has to go diving etc. I dont know... didn't convince me. The motivations are too weak, weaker than crystall, i think it missed the religious magic stuff that's at the core of the Indiana movies. Overall, it was a better, less cringy experience than crystal. So.. meh... Not terrible, but not a waste of my time. Oh, could have been 30 minutes shorter also (less train, less insane flashing action sequences where you cant see sh*t, the whole cia plot etc)

Finally watched it and had to come back here to comment. I agree with a lot of what you said. It beat my expectations, but only because I set the bar so low with everything I’ve heard over the last six months. The first problem I had was with the CIA lady and Voller. It was never clear why she and the thugs she was with were working together. I caught something along the lines that the US government needed him for his rocket smarts to get to the moon, but it still didn’t make sense. The one guy, Hauke, was so large I thought they applied CGI to him. Nope. He’s 7’ 2” in real life. Still, the whole relationship between all of them was so confusing that it hindered my enjoyment for the next half an hour because I was still trying to work out in my head how they fit together before I gave up and got my head back into the movie. For a second I thought Helena might do a double cross and show that she was working with them as well, fooling Indy and pitting him against everyone, but that thankfully didn’t come to pass. I was also frustrated when they left the diving location and headed right to their destination. I knew they’d get followed. They couldn’t do anything, like travel to another city and get on another boat or take a car? Lastly, after arriving in the past and spending some time there, I couldn’t wait to see how they’d get back. It’s the kind of thing you usually see in a movie. They’d make they’re way back and an engine would fail, the portal would be near closing, or someone would have to make a choice a bail to make the plane lighter or go out on a wing to fix a mechanical component. Nope. He gets punched in the face and wakes up in his time. It’s usually what a production would do if they ran out of money. There was no build up at all getting back to his own time.

This movie was laughably bad as a stand alone adventure film made even more disappointing by the title of one of the greatest action hero franchises in film history. The best part was the de-aged stuff in the beginning and would have made a far better feature length film even with his geriatric voice. They may as well have brought Marcus back to make this muppet-faced amazon his neice or daughter. Ugh.

It was leaked that there was going to be a young and old Indy in the past working together, but young Indy would die in the end, wiping out his history. His Niece then would take his hat and name and do all his old adventures only better in a montage reel. They would then reboot the Franchise with PWB as the lead in a Disney+ tv series. They used some of the original time travel stuff for the flashback scene in the beginning. People were not happy about this original cut and the flack was severe and test audiences hated it as well.

My main complaint is that they're not making an Indiana Jones movie they're making another female centric girlboss movie focused on ticking boxes, and wrapping it in Indiana Jones paper so people will go see it. I don't mind them making girlboss movies, just don't ruin Indy and pretend you love the character like the fans do. It's just a parsitic message infecting the host franchise... Leading to the death of the host property. I wish they'd made Fate of Atlantis.... That said it probably wouldn't have been as good given Ford is 30-40 years too old for it. Sophia Hapgood in that story was a strong willed woman, who's only sin in modern politics would be to have a romantic arc with Indy. It's sad that a man and woman falling in love in a story these days is seen as regressive, as opposed to being as natural as breathing.

She insults and berates him, and literally laughs as Indy's friend is murdered. She is a literal grave-robber and sells antiquities on the black market. She ogles and objectifies men, and tells the audience how charming and attractive she is (she isn't). Second, the scriptwriters killing Indy's son and turning Indy into a broken man is unforgivable. I know what you mean, I can't watch the news these days as every article is so negative. Or the stories they elivate or suppress seems to fit into some idiologic agenda. I disagree that people are complaing simply to complain. Many reviewers also make reviews of quality products they recommend. We don't owe companies anything. If they make something, your oppions are your own. They want to lace their products with their world views fine, but we don't have to accept it. If the quality of the goods aren't good, don't waste your money or your Time. Don't fill your mind with bad product, garbage in, garbage out.

People in the comments moaning about how movies aren't as good as their childhood. You're actually lamenting the loss of your youth. There were plenty of awful movies that we thought were great when we were kids in the 70s and 80s, when watching through childs eyes. Flick them on now and you'll wonder what the hell you saw in them.
As for those moaning about female leads and "Mary Sue" characters, give it up. Embrace the fact that young girls will grow up with female movie heroes. Your daughters will be able to play action scenes with their brothers and their friends, Acting out scenes from films like we did, rather than relegating the girls to characters that had to be saved from danger or for the most part not let them play with us at all.
Maybe then kids will grow up as equals and 50yr old men won't be incensed by seeing women in action movie leads.

So you admit the these so called female heroes (or Mary Sue, as you call them) are meant to fill a quota to fulfill some political agenda? Hell, even Daisy Ridley has basically apologized for how bad her Rey character is.

@ Liofa73 - I think the notion that men are trying to keep women out is funny. When I was young, we'd have loved girls to be into what we are, but they weren't. I think a lot of people became 'geeks' once people understood how good the properties were, and its became increasingly mainstream. I also believe this attracted a lot of parasites who saw there was money and power to be made, but lacked a real authentic passion.
There's the idea that a black woman can't play a Chinese man, or a Mexican shouldn't be cast in an Irish role, as it would take the job away or something. Or that they can't know that authentic truth. At the same time they'd criticise men in the game industry for making games from their own perspective, or how they get women wrong or there isn't enough representation.... Those two ideas seem in opposition to me. You can't criticise people for making what they did from their experience and perspective. I think if people want their truth herd they should make it, if it's good their message will resonate with people. A lot of entertainment is getting far too bogged down in idiosyncratic minutiae. Not having stories based in truth and worthwhile relatable morals. They can keep shoveling out garbage, I don't care I wont watch it, but we all will have to live in the world with the people it's influencing and molding.
I also reject the notion that the only way to liberate women is to make them in a mans image. People should be absolutely free to follow their passions, but I utterly reject the kind of social engineering done top down from being conglomerate multinational companies telling women who they are and what they should like. I don't know where you grew up be we certainly didn't exclude girls from play. Given the fact when kids play they play as aliens from space or robots, I don't see the gender being some big deal. Furthermore, women as action stars? Aliens Ellen Ripley, Cowboy Bebop's Fay Valentine or Julia, Kill Bill's Beatrix Kiddo (oh or any of the other Deadly Vipers)... We're being sold a false narrative here. There are tones of strong female characters, people these days are complaining about pathetically written female characters without flaws that only exisit around male characters devoid of quality who get upstaged at every turn.

I enjoyed it. But I went in with low expectations because of Crystal Skull. They way they killed off Mutt between movies makes me think the producers didn't like that movie either. My biggest beef with the movie was the kid flying the plane. Also, not only was there no swinging on vines, there were no giant killer ants and no crystal skulls.

According to rumors the original ending they did go back to the 1930s and stayed there. I think they added Short Round 2 flying the plane in reshoots when they changed it to Syracuse ending. They already had Helena and the landing gear, so they added kid flying (plus the set up scene in Tangiers)
