- US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, one of the main figures behind tech and chip sanctions on China, and the woman who urged Europe to work with Washington to “slow China’s innovation,” recently appeared on 60 Minutes to talk about her gig.
She talked about some of her family’s back story, and revealed what is most definitely the exact reason she has such a hideous vendetta against China, and why she is hellbent on sending 1.4 billion people back into poverty.

I was in China 40yrs ago and then 30yrs ago regularly for work, I remember seeing and meeting many Americans execs who went to China literally BEGGING for China to manufacture for them..I even met some Westinghouse execs and other American execs all in China looking for factories.... because they wanted to lower their cost..so it was the American CEO's greed that made them goto China , to reduce costs, increase profits and thus CEOs and execs got their bigger bonuses that way. So Americans should blame the American CEOs and their CFOs instead and...not blame China or try to say China 'stole' jobs from America

Many companies which have set up factories in China have now left NOT back to the USA but instead to Vietnam or India, etc. So there must be something wrong with the US (labour cost, productivity of workers, cost of materials, etc) specifically and not with China.
I think what really disturbs the US is that economically the Chinese have climbed up the value chain and are able to foster international giants like Huawei, other tech giants like Shein, Xiaomi, etc, etc that compete against the best in the US and their (US) financial institutions/investment funds/hedge funds/etc do not have shares in the capital of most of these companies.

China doesn't mind, it is the high value/high tech/high return goods that they wish to keep. China is not a low wage country anymore.
What keeps China still the factory of the world is not primarily due to low wage but their supply chain/industrial manufacturing ecology where everything (components/sub-components, materials, talent, support talent, etc/) is in one place that production is efficient and fast, thus cheap, other countries don't have these.

My mom used to work in a garment factory in Chinatown in New York City from late 1960s thru early 1980s. She was making less than $30.00 per day even if she worked non stop. Then gradually these garment manufacturers moved their production to China because there are even cheaper labors. This is how businesses can make mega bucks, and sell the products with a substantial profit. For someone who supposedly had a education in economics should understand the reason for moving manufacturing overseas. She is just using her father’s situation as an excuse. Don’t be so hard on her; after all , she is accountable to her boss. She doesn’t want to lost her job like her dad .

The point about the failure of American capitalism in its engagement with China was masterfully argued by Prof Jeffrey Sachs, who pointed out that it is without doubt that America benefited enormously from trade with China. The real failure of American policy was it neglected to devise ways to ensure the benefits of trade with China was shared out properly and equitably between its capitalist class who laid claim to and expropriated almost all the gains from trade with China, and the working class, who lost jobs in the process. Hence, the ranks of American billionaires who were glorified as symbols of the success capitalism swelled immeasurably, while the standard of living of the working class stagnated or fell. Instead of acknowledging their role and accepting blame, the political elites who allowed this situation to fester instead directed via media disinformation the anger of the American working class at China. Ahh, Gina! She in Washington parlance is a ball buster! The one mark of Washington as the US Capital is the dysfunction of people in charge of others. She got the job as Commerce Secretary because she sucked up to Obama when he was President. Like most people in charge in DC people skills are not her strong suit. Along with a set of bad self-esteem issues because of her Hispanic heritage which is Washington is treated with just slightly less respect than being Afro-American. So if is not gone the respect she thinks she deserves or if she catches even the slightest verbal slight or sneering sideways glance, you become her mortal enemy.
So Gina shows up in China to lay down the law to Xi demanding they obey US demands on China and she was politely blown off and shown the door with no meeting as she expected with Xi. You have to know that every US government official possess an overblown sense of importance who arrives in Beijing expects due deference which includes a meeting with Xi.
China really hates this stuff, but fr Gina it’s a big deal.
One of my favorite pastimes in watching Beijing’s treatment of visiting government officials is who get what? Frinstance, any designated 'friend of China’ gets a personal Xi invite for a state visit with all the bells and whistles and gets gets a Xi meet and greet at the GHoP, chairing the talks, and/or a meeting on the side. A Premier Li Qiang invite, next level down if talks go well and get past the “frank exchange of views to find a balance and achieve a win-win situation” you get a hand-shake meet and greet with XI for 30 minutes. If talks don’t go well you go home after the VIP visits to the usual historic sites.
One of the fun things I will watch for is if Blinken gets a to meet Xi on this visit. Last couple of times the highest he rated was a meeting with Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Which in diplomacy is formally correct, meeting with his opposite number, but Blinken expects . But Blinken as does Yellen is such an egotists that they expect meetings with heads of state as matter of course,. But usually Beijing has denied him public visitation access. Same with Yellen recently.

Raimondo can do the reverse. Invite China to setup shops in US. Provide tax incentives and lands. In return, China transfer some technology to US. This is what China did some 30 years ago. US got green products and jobs creation. I advice Raimondo go China one more time. Be humble and learn to bow a bit, and sincerely sell this plan. Good luck.

As you discuss, Raimondo needs to direct her pent-up anger at Bulova and a capitalist system that promotes the need to export jobs for low wages, not China. And if Bulova was such an "American" corporation, why did it sell out Japanese ownership in the 2000s?
There’s a bunch of American companies that people don’t know are owned by some other country. For example, 7-11. 7-11 did some stock buybacks in the late 80s that didn’t end so well and caused them to go bankrupt. It was eventually bought up in 1990 by Ito-Yokado, who at the time owns 7-11’s
operations in Japan.

Bulova was founded by a Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova in NY City , in 1875.
In 1912 Bulova first established a manufacturing plant in Bienne, Switzerland. There were over small 300 watch makers in Switzerland at that time. I think the law required 70% (?) of "content" had to produced in Switzerland in order to carry that Made in Swiss label.
Boluva's entire hand-wind watch movement was made in Switzerland, then shipped to lower-cost countries, like the US, for some or all of the assembling. That was how Raimondo's father was employed as a chief scientist of material science. Then, in 1960 the quartz watch movement began to replace the hand-wind watch movement; and the Japanese Seiko and Citizen were very good at manufacturing quartz movement (and watch). Bulova sold part of the watch business to Gulf+Wester. But G+W wanted to be in entertainment, media, and hotel business. So, 3 years later, in 1979, it sold Bulova to a HK based watch component manufacturing co called Stulex (spelling?). Gina Raimondo's father might have lost the job aound this time. Bulova really did not "made" the entire watch in the US ever. She just made this shit up. I think she is setting herself up to run for the President 2028.

I watched that 60 Minute episode and Gina Raimondo has toned down quite a bit from her usual gangster style of bashing China with her false claims. Bulova’s decision to close down their Rhode Island plant and move to China was for the company’s beneficial interest, not China’s. China did not put a gun to Bulova’s head and demanded moving the plant. Gina’s father was a chemist at Bulova’s and closing of the plant did not put him in the poor house. With his skill, he continued to make a good living affording his family luxury lives. He was able to send Gina to prestigious university in u.k and to Yale law school. She was the governor of Rhode Island with a state population of less than a million; just a little more people than the city of San Francisco. And that somehow “qualified” as the queen of commerce of the world. Before her trip to China 8 months ago, she often spoke extremely poorly of China saying anywhere from stealing u.s technologies to human rights violations to unfair business practices to ruining the world’s economy. Listening to her speak turned my stomach. When she arrived in Beijing, she was shocked seeing the beautiful, clean, organized and futuristic looking airport. No red carpet treatment was provided to her as she was not an invited guest of the State. She exercised diplomacy when she met with the China leaders. She made her spiel but didn’t get anywhere. She then took the high speed railway from Beijing to Shanghai. She was totally amazed not only for the traveling speed, but also, how futuristic looking the trains were, how clean and comfortable the trains were with excellent serving staff providing her with first class refreshments. She noticed that all the rider needs were available at the seats: phone/computer charging outlets, entertainment monitor- music, movies , internet usage, reclining/massaging seats and so on. She appreciated how well run the high speed rails were. She cannot believe that there were no graffiti, no urine smell, no drug paraphernalia, no dilapidated seats and bathrooms; unlike the subways of the u.s. She also visited Disneyland in Shanghai; again absolutely amazed how clean, organized and well run.
Huawei launched its Mate 60 Pro phone on the same day as Gina’s arrival in Beijing. They wanted the secretary of commerce from the u.s to see this magnificent phone that is ALL China’s technology and design including the semiconductor chip. Gina saw the consumer lines wrapping around the buildings with a desire to buy one of the Mate 60 Pro. 900,000 units were sold in less than 1 hour. To date, 8 months later, 30 MILLION units sold while the iPhone 15 continued declining is sales, some 25% from previous years. All of these progress from China only made Gina more jealous and more hateful; wondering why the u.s can’t do the same. 🤔🤔🤔
And as usual, instead of reflecting how u.s can improve and do better to catch up; when the u.s can’t beat China, they just ban, lie, cheat, kill & steal and threaten sanctions. How sad and how shameful.

Give China another 2 years and the US and its allies will be 4 years behind after which you will see the west gunning for abolition of patents in the chips industry.
