    ahhh this is so amazing, can't wait to try it out! getting a guitar soon so i'm a total beginner, do you think i could tackle this right away (obviously knowing it might take some time before i'll actually be able to do it correctly) or is this too hard? should i wait a little longer and start off with easier songs?

    • @davedoingguitar
      @davedoingguitar  4 года назад +11

      That's so great you're getting into guitar Charlotte! Nice one 👍
      I would probably recommend this not being the very first thing you ever have a go at when you get your guitar, maybe have a look at doing a few picking exercises, learn some basic chords/songs and learn how to use a few common techniques such as sliding, hammer-ons and pull-offs (a quick search in youtube will help you out here).
      This doesn't mean you can't give Never Meant a shot though. This tune will be quite challenging (being accurate with your picking/having notes ring out while you play other ones/it's in an odd time signature/it's in a non-standard tuning so scale patterns and chord shapes won't be transferrable to other songs etc) but hopefully my explanation of it is simple enough to follow along with. Obviously, like you said, it'll take a bit of time, but it's like anything - start slowly and learn it bit by bit. Start with the main riff and play slowly so you make as few mistakes as possible and then add the next few notes and build it up this way until you can play the whole riff. Once you've got it all together, start speeding it up a bit until you're at the same tempo as the song. And if it's not working, just set it aside and come back to it down the track and have another go.
      If you give it a shot and are struggling with something, just comment again and I'll try and help you out.
      Welcome to the guitar haha. Hope you like it 😃

      @@davedoingguitar Thank you so, so much for such a detailed reply! I was already planning on learning some basic chords etc first, but I also figured that trying to learn some songs right away will keep me motivated! Since I'm a total newby I can't yet really tell how hard any given song actually is, but I've got a few others lined up that seem to be way easier than this, so I'll start with those before I tackle this one. Might even be a nice motivation of sorts, something to look forward to, as I've always liked this song quite a lot. Thanks for all of the tips and thanks for the nice welcome! :)

    • @davedoingguitar
      @davedoingguitar  4 года назад +2

      Sorry for the slow response.
      My pleasure Charlotte :)
      Yeah learning songs is absolutely great for motivation rather than getting bogged down in theory or technique when you're first starting out. I had lessons for 7 or 8 years which was really great, but I found I learnt just as much by jamming along to music I like and figuring things out by ear. I learnt a lot of The Beatles (which are great for learning lots of interesting chords and chord progressions) and classic 60's/70's rock like Led Zeppelin and Hendrix and Cream which are all obviously guitar heavy tunes and a good mix of chords and single note riffs which I found useful early on.
      What sort of Indie bands are you into? I could check some out and try to point you in the right direction as to what to learn if you like?

    DAEAC#D how are you supposed to know how to tune it to that? i cant find a youtube video or anything showing how

    • @davedoingguitar
      @davedoingguitar  3 года назад +3

      You'll need to get your tuner out and do this -
      Guitar 1 (from low string to high string)
      E up to F
      A stays as A
      D down to C
      G stays as G
      B up to C
      E stays as E
      And for guitar 2
      E down to D
      A stays as A
      D up to E
      G up to A
      B up to C#
      E down to D
      Then once you've tuned to this put a capo on the 3rd fret.

    • @alalal123421
      @alalal123421 3 года назад +1

      @@davedoingguitarwow thanks i think you would reply yourself appreciate it! for guitar 1 i just found a video of someone tuning and matched up the sounds, if i dont have access to a tuner could i just listen to each note and tune to it(like listen to an open D and tune the E down to it? i think i tried doing that and messed up because i was tuning up)

    • @davedoingguitar
      @davedoingguitar  3 года назад

       @P A No worries :)
      Yeah absolutely, if you haven't got a tuner then the best way is to match them from another guitar or off a keyboard (though I'd recommend getting a tuner if possible if you're going to be playing a bit of guitar). I give an example of guitar 1 tuning at 0:33 and guitar 2 tuning at 7:35 so you can tune from there.
      Also a general rule for alternate tunings is the note you're tuning to is probably fairly close to the standard tuning. If you see that you've got to tune your G string to an F, you're going to be tuning down to that because F is only a small distance away from G - just 2 frets below. Whereas if you try tuning the G string up to F you're going to be trying to tighten the string up 10 frets and if you do this your string will snap. If the note you're tuning to is quite a distance away (4-7+ frets away) then you'll definitely be tuning down.
      Basically the most you'll ever see to tune a string up (sharper) from standard tuning is about 3 frets worth otherwise you get into string snapping territory.
      Hope this helps :)

    • @davedoingguitar
      @davedoingguitar  3 года назад +5

      Hopefully your app has a mode where it will be displaying whatever note you're playing and not just saying you're really sharp/flat and trying to lock you in to standard tuning. So once you're in that mode, tune to this -
      Guitar 1 from low to high
      E up to F
      A stays as A
      D down to C
      G stays as G
      B up to C
      E stays as E
      And for guitar 2
      E down to D
      A stays as A
      D up to E
      G up to A
      B up to C#
      E down to D
      Then once you've tuned to this put a capo on the 3rd fret.
      Hopefully this helps. If you're still having trouble then I would really recommend grabbing a tuner as this will making playing along with this and other songs a lot simpler for you. Or grabbing the app GuitarTuna which i have on my phone. It has the mode I mentioned above and is free so should sort out your issue :)

      For guitar 2 you mean? Yeah tune it up. Only going up a tone (2 notes) so it won't stress your string to the point of snapping. Same distance as the B to C# for string 2 :)

      Just like anything, take it slowly and break it down into small parts. Try learning the first three notes, get that down and then move on to the next three notes. Once you've got them down, join them up with the first three you learnt and so on. Might take some time but you can get there 🙂

      Hey jenag jrjc, you’ll need to get your tuner out and do this -
      Guitar 1 (from low string to high string)
      E up to F
      A stays as A
      D down to C
      G stays as G
      B up to C
      E stays as E
      And for guitar 2
      E down to D
      A stays as A
      D up to E
      G up to A
      B up to C#
      E down to D
      Then once you've tuned to this put a capo on the 3rd fret.

    Your comments for guitar 1 says tuning is in FACGCE but your video says open D for the first string plucked. I don’t get it. There is no open D string.

    • @davedoingguitar

      Tychiballs808 Tychiballs808 For the purposes of talking through things I just refer to the strings as standard tuning even though they’re tuned differently. So when I’m playing the 6th string, I’ll still call it low E even though it’s tuned to F. 4th string I’ll refer to as the D string even though it’s a C etc. I find it makes things a bit easier to talk about rather than remembering the alternate string names. I make mention of this at around 2:00.

    • @TychiballsTychiballs
      @TychiballsTychiballs 4 года назад

      davedoingguitar yes I did hear you mention that part and I understand but the sound your guitar actually makes is an open D. When I pluck my 4th string which is tuned to C, which is what it says in your comments on how i should tune it, it does not sound like yours. After I changed that string to D now it sounds great.

    • @TychiballsTychiballs
      @TychiballsTychiballs 4 года назад

      davedoingguitar so your comments should actually say guitar 1 should be tuned as FADGCE not FACGCE.

      Tychiballs808 Tychiballs808 I’ve just rewatched through and also tuned my guitar to what I say in the video and guitar one is definitely in FACGCE tuning. Not sure what you’re hearing sorry. The song is in C and the open 4th string is the root note

      davedoingguitar well idk then. Could be my tuner was off. After practicing i did throw out the battery because it was dead so maybe my 4th string wasn’t tuned properly. ??? Thanks anyway and thanks for posting this video.
