- Braces Explained: Overbite vs Overjet
In this video I will be answering the question of “what is the difference between overbite and overjet?”
I’ve noticed a lot of people usually misterm “overjet” as “overbite” and that was my motivation for creating this video! So let’s begin with overbite. Overbite is the amount your upper teeth overlap your lower teeth. If you have a big overbite that means that your upper teeth cover most of your lower teeth and you can’t see them. This is referred to as a “deep bite.” Sometimes you may have such a big deep bite that your lower teeth actually bite against your palate! The opposite of a big overbite is no overbite, or a reverse overbite, which is also called an open bite. This is when your upper and lower front teeth don’t touch!
So if that’s overbite, what’s overjet? Overjet is the amount of horizontal distance from your upper and lower teeth. If your upper teeth are way ahead of your lower teeth, that means you have an large overjet. This is what people often mistakenly call an overbite. If you have an underbite or, in other words, your upper front teeth are behind your lower front teeth, that is a “reverse overjet”.
Some overjet and overbite are normal are somewhere between 1-3mm but if you have too much, or not enough of either, it could result in unfavorable wear of your teeth, poor function, and jaw joint problems, to name a few.

I have a small overjet (about a quarter of an inch forward) and quite a big overbite.
I have both😭 just got my braces on in February though can’t wait to see the difference!
Is there a difference now
@Arianna Lana yes! I’m already so much more confident in my smile :) they’re definitely worth the pain
@@aac2289 yes! I already love my smile and I’m not even done with treatment
@@courtneyfindlay3849 hi! before you got your braces did you have to make appointment and how long does it take before getting braces ?
@@aac2289 yes before you get them put on your first ortho appt will be to assess your teeth and discuss your options. In my case my teeth were so bad that Invisalign wasn’t an option and I had to get the metal braces. But some people can get away with using Invisalign. At the first appt they’ll set ur your bonding day, which is the day you get your braces put on. I only had to wait about a month to get mine put on
Dr. Greg, thanks for your clear explanatory videos! They're a great help to me as a concerned mother to an orthodontic patient, especially since our doctor seems to think that I wouldn't understand his answers to my questions, so he doesn't really bother with the details...
Could you please explain how braces are used to correct a deep bite with no overjet?
I've been having braces for a year and 3 months now 😩 Probably gonna wear it for 3 years because I havent been wearing my elastics, I have an overbite too 💙 I love these videos !!!!
Wear your elastics all the time except when your eating of course it will really help speed up the process 😘
sarah star I know 😣 my mom is the one not taking me to the dentist when i run out of elastics, i asked for 2 packs my last appointment , Hopefully it will turn out great 🌸
Make sure your asking for extra packs. Elastics are SOOOO important
Great job everyone. This is the type of support I was hoping to see on my channel. Belieber, make sure you wear them! Check out my video on elastics too if you want to know WHY we ask you to wear the elastics. Great seeing you all checking in!
Been waiting for an explanation of the two, thank you Dr.Greg!
Woo! So glad that I was able to provide you with an explanation! Hope it helped =]
Another awesome video!
Can you consider making one about the different orthodontist treatments to fix an over-jet? as well as extraction vs none extraction and how extractions could change the facial profile?
Thank you so much! Lots and lots of questions in there haha but I do plan on addressing those comments on future videos!
This explained a lot, I have a large overjet and an open bite with a protruding jaw where it’s not even aligned and it’s more to the left side and my jaw clicks every time I open my mouth or even close it or even eat. I’ve got a dentist appointment in a few weeks, hopefully they can recommend braces for me and maybe surgery bc it’s literally ruining my life. thank you for the video!
Of course! Best of luck to you!
Bro my front teeth cover my bottom teeth to the point where you cant even see rm 😭😭😭
Please do a video on headgear and how it works on people with overbite and under bite. Great video btw.
Thank you so much! Yes, I definitely plan on doing a video on headgear & reverse pull headgear soon =]
Thank you I didn't know what a over jet was
That's so great that you know now, right?? =]
Yep
Before braces I thought I had overjet but when I consult doctor.. Doctor said I have overbite and doctor recommended braces but now I was thinking what is the difference between overbite and overjet and found this video...this video was really useful for me and it's 3 rd month with braces🙂
veryyyy helpful , thank you!!!
I used to have overbite since i grew up. So that’s why I need to get brace in 2017 and present in this year, it’s huge changed!😄😄😄
Love your videos, really helping understand my braces :) Can you explain a cross bite and the alignment stages? Thanks in Advance! keep up the good videos!

I have both 😔 I’m getting my braces soon. I get my bands put on Monday so I’m pretty excited! It sucks that I had to wait almost 22 years for braces, but I’m just blessed to finally have the opportunity to do so! Hopefully I can gain some self confidence ❤️
That's so awesome! I'm glad that you're getting around to taking care of yourself. Congrats on beginning your braces journey & please dont be a stranger on this channel! - Happy Thanksgiving!
Hey bro how did it go? Did u got ur braces removed? Did u had a overbite or overjet? How long did it take to fix? Plz answer.....
Nice information! I knew what a overbite was, but never knew of a over jet! When I was little, my parents knew I had a overbite and told me if I couldn’t fix it, I would have to get surgery. I was scared to get surgery, so I forced my upper jaw (I’m not sure if it’s called that, but like the roof of the mouth) to align with my lower jaw. It was difficult, but I kept forcing myself, and it worked. Soon my teeth would stay on top, not behind or front, and than I would work to get a small over jet. I was glad I didn’t have to get surgery, and my parents were proud!
that's great!
My dentist gave me an overjet on the left side of my mouth and he isn’t trying to fix it before he take off my braces idk what to do 🤦🏽♂️
Same im actually so worried about my bite now. Ive had braces for 6 years so my dentist wanted to get them off asap. I took them off less than two weeks ago but my bite feels totally off. Ive tried mewing for several months but I'm probably not doing it right. I wish I knew exactly the cause of the missalignment.
You're the one paying for it. Tell him.

These eyebrows are pretty intelligent. The dentist is smart too I guess😁 In all serious thanks for the video. You actually answered a question about my smile I had been wondering about for a few weeks now.
I've always felt live ive had an overbite! Mines pretty deep too you can't see my bottom teeth when I close my mouth :)
thank u so much! this really helped me understanding such complicated definitions of overbite and overjet!!
welp, guess i have both.
Most people do! =]
THANKS MAN I COULDNT DIFFERENTIATE WHAT I HAD FINALLY
Can you have both an overbite and overjet??
Yup
Yes, I do.
Everyone answered this for me, but yup!! =]
Yeah?. And can you still get braces if you have a big overbite or overjet, sometimes I feel like they will have to break my jaw if I were to get braces
I have both ;-;
I had both, my orthodontics gave me blocks for over jet and it really helped. Now I will be getting fixed braces for the deep over bite.
How much does it cost
Your videos are the best! Thank you
Aw thank you so much Maria - I really appreciate all your support !!
Next video about openbite please. 😃 Thanks!
I have a few other videos lined up before that one!
I've had braces for ~1 yr, 3 mo. I'm almost ready for corrective jaw surgery for my underbite!! What do you think about making a video about correct jaw surgeries? It'd be fairly general, of course, since each case is a little different.
Yeah definitely! =] Trying to get a surgeon on board to do a joint video!

Aww thank you so much. You should never feel bad about your teeth!!
After wearing braces for an overbite will my jaw look more forward
Nope it will do the complete opposite lol
It depends on the treatment
Great videos n great work
Plz make some videos on ideal bracket positioning and archwire sequence and durations for each wire.
Thank you
I dont have a template for bracket positioning / AW sequence. It really is dependent on the patients smile arch and severity of L&A stages
Hi Dr. Greg!
I suscribed to your channel a few weeks ago, hoping you would post a video about this topic :) lucky me!
So basically I got braces about 3-4 months ago, I‘ve only had it tightened twice by now. I have a slight over-jet, yet it is still noticeable for someone without much knowledge about teeth.
My dentist said it would take about 9 to11 months to push my teeth in to where they should sit. Yet I feel like that is such a quick time to get such drastic results. I had normal braces as a kid but don’t remember how fast things really went. Do you know if that is a realistic time frame to do anything on anyone’s teeth? Do you have any experiences with over-jets? And is it easy to fix them?
Thanks so much for your help!
Having braces as an adult really sucks :(
That's great! Glad that I was able to help answer your question! Its really hard / impossible for me to give you a time estimate because I really am unfamiliar with your case. If your ortho quoted you 9-11 mo, then I can imagine it being possible! Technology has advanced quite a bit and treatment times are becoming faster and faster. Unfortunately though, I can't give you many more answers than your doc!
i have an overjet on the left side of my mouth. due to that, my face looks uneven. and finally i got my braces yesterday. im hoping for a positive result🙏
I have braces now for about 4months due to overbite and overjet teeth at same time(upper). What is really the treatment for this? My teeth are not crowded. My dentist said that my 2 ( i think the canine or my 2 premolar tooth are needed to be extracted.and im afraid that in the future my teeth will be having spaces.
Pls have an advise
Thank you in advance
Ever since I got my braces off I’ve been getting a openbite because of my retainer
I have a deep bite my top teeth go completely over my bottom teeth..My ortho said he wants to correct it with bands
This was unintentionally funny.
i have both :o
Most people have some overbite & overjet, which is ideal, but too much is not!
I actually have a underbite and cross bite. I'm in the midst of trying to get it sorted as I just got my wisdom teeth pulled and waiting to see of my teeth are done moving so then I can move forward with braces. The plan is to have two years of braces, surgery after 1 year and the remaining year to hold them in place. I hope everything works out
Exciting stuff! You got to keep us posted with your progress!
so freddie mercury had an overjet?
Loll yes, a huge overjet actually
This is really really weird and awkward because I feel like braces or like a nerd thing but it’s OK because I ain’t scared of no bullies

How are you getting it treated? Braces?
wow thats amazing. I have overbite and overjet case which was 7cm before then it reduced to 2cm approximately but after a year of removing the braces wearing only retainer my upper teeth shifted again to 5cm overjet. i hope my ortho can understand my situation
Well, dang. I’ve never heard of an overjet..... always thought I had an overbite.

I have a large overjet. Is it possible for braces to fix this even if I'm ending my teen years and never got braces before?
Sure yes, its never too late
You may end up with jaw surgery as to correct it they tend to encourage the lower jaw to grow and if you have stopped growing then to correct it you will need jaw surgery
