I love the general tone of the first film, it's a lot less glossy and feels like Cruise is playing a different action hero to the type he's typically known for.
Internet in 1996 is like futuristic for 90% of people around the world . If you ask someone " what is internet" in 1996 they can't answer you. 26 years later internet is like a part of human body
Except for news, there was not much in the web in 1996. No videos of any kind (maybe a few JPEGS), no information, basic pages, no e-commerce at all, Yahoo was the search engine and it was difficult to find something there.
It was such a nice contrast to Goldeneye, which was filled with machine gun shootouts and constant action. Too bad they immediately turned the IP into an over-the-top action franchise.
In 1996, the Internet was in its infancy and not even that. I was finishing university back then and it had only been introduced in 1995 to our library workstations. Internet sites were absolutely terrible. People have no idea ! Plus, this scene is supposedly based in Prague. Very few residential homes were connected in mainland Europe (let alone in the UK) to the WWW so totally unrealistic, with hindsight. No Internet cafes. Laptops for a minority. The reality for us Generation X. A great movie though when it was released.

To connect to internet you needed to use telephone connection, very expensive and very slow!
I watched this scene last night after buying the MI bundle movies from iTunes. Is he basically guessing all this on the spot? He thinks that by messaging Max@Job 3:14 he's going to randomly find Max SOMEWHERE on random internet forums lol?
Old school spy stuff. Hes not just messaging one message board, he's messaging EVERY message board that's related to Job 3:14, hoping that one of his messages connects to the right person. That's why later in the scene he looks so tired, he's been at it for hours.
Ahhh Usenet, a magical place. Back then, a place for thoughtful discussions and real world issues. Now, a pirates wet dream... God bless binary newsgroups :P
Ethan is reaching out to Max in every language because he's trying to cast his net as wide as possible. We see him reach out to Max in English and German, but it can be assumed that he sent far more emails than those two.
It took me a while to figure out. Basically he's finding every single bible discussion group on the internet, posting pretending like he's part of the job deal, hoping that max would see his message thinking he's trying to reach her. One of the lines he cast out caught a fish

I can tell you where on my body the internet is used for
Too bad it sucks. Yeah pr0n and streaming videos, but they homogenized it and took away the magic.
And what I wonder: In 1996 the internet existed already and I used it regularly. I wonder why it's depicted in such a weird way.

Unfortunately in MI2 they threw out any sort of intelligence and subtlety. There’s just constant machine guns being fired for no reason.
Nice move, using the bible reference. Two-pronged - [a] to Max, indicating that the NOC list wasn't, and [b] double-double-cross with Phelps.
Hunt types 'palaces now lying in ruins', when in fact the passage from the Bible he quotes reads 'places'. Scruffy work from Tom.
I guess he mispelled that word due to his physical condition. He was EXTREMELY tired
The writer probably thought it would sound more elegant.

Their super hacker set it up so he could be tapped into the government's internet or something.
