As someone who's spent WAY too much time analyzing the rolls for TheRunawayGuys in various Mario parties, this lands itself as sufficient evidence for "the computer just hates you"
Speaking as a scientist, I wouldn't describe pseudo-random numbers as "rigged". There are actually a lot of reasons that pseudo-random numbers are preferable, especially when it comes to error-checking and ensuring that the rolls are fair (or as fair as intended). Truly random fair numbers are difficult to generate and work with - in theory you can seed them off the game clock, but then you're really trading one source of pre-determined pseudo-randomness for another. The only thing you'd really gain from a more dynamic rng is the ability to save-scum with an emulator.
Been playing lots of the GameCube Mario Parties and coincidentally this video comes out around the same time, sometimes I feel like the dice are rigged but the fun and random factor are what make it Mario Party, Team ZoomZike! Let’s go!
I don't know how many writers worked on this episode, but some of them need to learn that it's *one die, many dice*. You can't have "a dice", you have "a die".
This is an interesting topic. I wouldn’t necessarily calle the dice “rigged” unless the game was doing some kind of decision making to help one player over another (say making sure that cpus of higher difficulties always get higher numbers, for example). Not even in the case where the game selects a number one time and it will always give you that result no matter how long you wait to hit the dice so long as it went through the same process for all the players.
Agreed. But I still prefer it be based on WHEN you hit the dice even if it's just RNG. Mechanically keeping the illusion is something I can appreciate coming off this video even if it realistically doesn't matter. Still would bother me if it was pre-determined like MP1 and MPDS
I’ve been watching DYKG for almost 10 years now. It was one of the first RUclips subscriptions I had in high school. I live this channel and everything you guys do. Please never stop with the awesome information!

A friend of mine insisted that the dice RNG was rigged to favour certain characters a long before Super Mario Party. He insisted that for example Mario Party 7 favours Toad above every other character
I very much enjoyed this video. I’d love to see more of this kind of video in the future, since it technically still falls under the idea of “did you know gaming” so it makes sense

No, because there might be multiple factors that effect the outcome. They not only confirmed this, but pinpointed exactly when it happens. Experiments need to account for variables, and designed in a way so that those variables can be identified.
As someone who tried and knows about the Mario Party 1 dice situation I must say there is one thing you can do to at least change your dice outcome. Reset the game after saving on the intended way : Play on the 64 and push the reset button or turn the console off. This might be the most annoying way to change your dice outcome, but it is a way I can confirm that (when the number generator doesn't do something funny) will change your dice number outcome.
I swear to god the Mic trick works in Mario Party 6 Solo mode. I've tried it tons of times and its worked. It should be noted that this is only in Solo Mode not in the regular party mode. Gonna go try it out again because now you guys have me doubting myself.

The dice rolls in the first Mario Party game can be controlled from The Game's main menu screen. As stated, each dice roll is decided before all four players even hit their dice. From this, you can go to the main game selection screen and continue your adventure from the warp pipe. From there, you can keep doing this until you get the result you want.
I don't give a shit about Mario Party but this was super interesting. I definitely think in-depth dives on a certain topic should be a mainstay on this channel, along with the classic rapid-fire trivia.
The skill is in what you do with your random rolls. Do you loop around? Do you go for the battle mini game or eat the -3 coins and go toward a star? Et cetera.
Mario party 2 (and maybe 3) has an actual pattern but it's fast for anyone to do, TAS videos actually are able to get specific rolls (look up 999 coins in 7/8 turns [I don't remember which, either way it's TAS])
Thanks GOODNESS I watched this video. I was sold on the idea of the 'hit the dice when you hear the high pitch' thing in SMP Switch, but could never get it to work...
Great video! Would love to see more like it in the future. It reminds me of some of the speed run videos that are broken down by Karl Jobst, SummoningSalt, and EZscape. Fascinating to watch to say the least.
I have found that in the original mario party (for the switch version at least) the dice roll seems to be decided for the next turn, just after the last player has taken their turn and before lakitu appears for the mini game screen. So you could set a save state before the last player ends their turn, so that when you load said save state, the dice roll would be different.
If you ever get a chance, it would be cool to see the same analysis done to Pokémon catching throughout the series. There have been a load of times on emulation, throughout multiple games, where I have made catch attempts and reset the save state for it to do the exact same number of "wiggles" even when changing the ball type. Makes it seem like it chooses the outcome before the ball is even thrown.
Nothing feels worse than having traps ahead of you in 6 or 7, activating a Metal Mushroom Orb to disable the traps...only to roll a 1 and miss everything...
People thought I was full of shit when I said it’s RNG and pretty much just “Luck” so good to know that it is an RNG mechanic and not when you can hit the button faster or slower
For what it's worth, it should still be possible to "control" which number you roll, despite the RNG, even mid-game. Just soft-reset. I seem to recall doing that a lot in Mario Party DS years ago, and possibly others as well. If you've got the game set to save every turn and you don't like your roll, just reset, load your save and try again. Sure, your friends might not be okay with that if you're playing multiplayer, but if you're playing by yourself for whatever reason, go for it.
