Moonglow is my favourite Daniel Smith colour! Good skin tone mix for fair skin is titan buff and yellow ochre. You can add the tiniest. Touch of. Alizarin crimson to it to pink it up a little.
I love my Daniel Smith watercolors! I only own four of them and they are all from the genuine line but I love using them to do a little bit of watercoloring on my journal pages.
Thank you for sharing the colors, and for taking the time to upload all the links! I'm planning on saving this video for when I decide to try watercolors. For now, I have an inexpensive set I got off of jetpens, and some inktense pencils. :)
Delicious Selection!! The Indigo and Amazonite are beautiful. If you had the choice to only keep one set would it be the Daniel Smith or the Schmincke? I'm looking at making/buying a palette and both are very expensive over here (Australia) and I'm struggling to decide which to invest in.....
Love Napthamide Maroon alongside Amazonite Genuine. I grew up in the Four Corners area of the USA and love the Southwest colors. Oh, and Quin Coral and New Gamboge are also Southwestern. Yum! Now I've put all these on my Blick's Wishlist. (Just ordered New Gamboge).
I would love to see some ethnic girls you have done! I'm always hunting for girls that look like me. I want to have a girl that looks like me as a dashboard... Very hard to find. Thanks for this video. In adding soma DS and that aqua! Love your videos! Next time I'm in SA I want to meet you!
Hey, I just wanted to let you know of an artist who paints all different skin tones. And she might be open to a commissioned piece. Her website is camillerene.com Check it out. She has cute animals with her girls. Like a fox or an owl. good luck
I'm Daniel Smith obsessed. I have so many as well. I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the primatexs. They are to die for. I NEED the burnt sienna light color too. I think I can get it on their website, but otherwise, I have to buy the Alvaro Castagnet set which already has so many colors I own, so I think I will be ordering from Daniel Smith soon. I also really want the quin coral you were talking about. It looks so pretty!
Ok Ali I ordered 8 of them some of your favorites! Thank you so much for your recommendations and I was surprised you do not like your Schmincke set as much as you though you would
Im building my first palette and had it set in my mind i needed a vintage tin and spent hours looking. Yours is fantastic. Im going to get your colors first bc its driving me crazy trying to pick and yours are pretty.
I love your videos. I like your camera work in the beginning when you gave us a close up of your swatches and then it goes right down to the table shot, genius! :)
Phthalo is pronounced "thaylo." Some years ago my watercolor paints were thrown out by some cleaning ladies. I'm slowly building up my Daniel Smith arsenal, they are my favorite wc paints. I do like some Winsor and Newton as well. I love DS Amethyst, Black Tourmaline, Sugilite and Bronzite as well as the Fuchsite colors. They all have a natural iridescence which can bring a painting to life.
+Ali Brown. Btw....do u have a video talkin bout the INKS you use for your Fountain pens? I'd luv to get something waterproof, like you use & paint over later?!? :)
These are so beautiful. As a student I just can't shell out the money for these paints, and definitely not the schminka- but I will long for them from afar haha. I'm thinking of making a watercolour insert for my travellers notebook, because I love watercolours but I just hate using them on anything BUT watercolour paper- it's just not the same!
I bet you will get your paints someday. Christmas is comin' ya know. :) I made a watercolor insert for myself. I love it. I also enjoy these paints on the TR. There is just crinkly awesome goodness after the TR gets wet and then dries again. :D
Do you happen to have demo of how you made the insert? I've fallen in love with the colour on your channel! It's so divine! Bunny sent me to you and I'm never leaving! haha
I just measured the paper and then used an Xacto knive to trim. Bound it by piercing the middle and then sewing the insert with...wait for it....dental floss. ;) Was super easy. :D Thank you so so much for your kind words! Love Bunny!!!
I appreciate your videos so much and today's is perfect timing for me! I'm finally going to submit my order....or tomorrow.....as I'm also planning to upgrade my brushes. Can you please share your faves?
This is so so exciting!!! I just use the Master's Touch round brushes that you can get from Hobby Lobby lots of times on sale. They work great! I am saving for a real Squirrel blend mop brush..but it's about $80!!! O_o
Ali- Thank you for another wonderful video. Some craziness and sadness in my life lately has kept me from signing up as a Patron but I will be asap. I am thankful for your wonderful videos! Even though I have the JD Schmincke set, I still want some of these Daniel Smith pans! Can you share where you bought the pans? I only find tubes. I can always make my own I know and is probably more economical. Thx!
Hi Ali, I just got a couple of small sets of Daniel Smith's starter pack with the dot card....looking forward to use them. Do you find having filled a pan they. re- wet ok ...my hubby keeps telling me not to put out too much paint but I hate the mess of getting stuff out of tubes and want to fill a half pan ...already bought a tin and pans but now sitting on the fence whether I should!
Thanks for sharing. I've been thinking about buying Daniel Smith since I want more colors for mixing. I probably am not talented enough for professional yet though haha. Where did you get the palette box? Also, any idea how long a half pan or 5ml tube would last until you run out? I know it varies based on how you use it, but if you have any experience with that I'd appreciate it. I definitely want some of these colors now. Thanks again!
Are you referring to my vintage metal 'Little Artist' tin? If so, then I got that on ebay. I bought my first Daniel Smith colors last Christmas and have only touched the bottom of one of the colors...to give you an idea of how long they last. I use my paints a decent amount but not too heavily.
Daang, great video. you put a ton of work into it! I like your color choice a lot, my main palette is very, very similar!. I'm also a super fan of the Daniel Smith Primatek stuff. Recently I've been playing with this granulating rust color called Mummy Bauxite, it's great, you might dig it! anyways thank you for the video! subscribed!
I'm interested in buying some Daniel smith water colors but I was wondering what you bought to be able to swatch them yourself because I would LOVE to do that
Purple Dragonfly Google Daniel Smith Dot Card. They have both 66 and 238 color cards available. The 238 dot card (5 pages) is the full line with the exception of the new 2017 colors. The dot cards are worth the price, $21.67 from Amazon, as you are able to see the true color and quality of these paints. 😊
thank you for sharing this beautiful palette. I just discovered your channel with the episode of the chic sparrow lady. Question: what type of brush are you using here, # and type? It sure is performing well and I'm curious as to the brand/type - looks like a 6 or 8 round.
I loved the review & I’m sold! However for the cost of the half pans + shipping of $3.44 on each individual pan, you can purchase a whole tube of paint on Amazon
Ali Brown I stand corrected; I was under the impression that for each half pan it was almost $4 in shipping; if that was the case it would make sense to just buy the tubes. But to try out these paints, if someone doesn’t want the hassle of making their own pans, this isn’t a bad deal! I don’t want to discourage anyone from trying out this etsy shop
Well, I'm seeing this a bit late. Its now Aug, 2019 and new pigments are here. But yes, I love Quin Coral too. I use it for skin tones. I paint baby portraits. It is a PR209 and comes in most brands except Schmincke. Schmincke just doesn't have a PR209 but they do have a Brand new similar hue a (PR207) called "Quinacridone Red Light". Its just a tad warmer. I have PR209 in both Holbein , Winser & Newton & Daniel Smith. I am a Schmincke fan for sure but cannot resist the PrimaTek line by DS. I have a lot of different brands and am not totally bran loyal. I like Prussian Blue but wont use it because it fades really bad. Everyone who tests it for lightfastness have said the same. I have no clue why its always listed with good lightfastness. It doesn't.
Hey. Great vid. And a note about quinacridone gold. Daniel Smith is the only REAL PO49 q gold. All of the others are just mixtures of 3 or 4 other colors that you can mix yourself.
Yes. I assume she was referring to the color choices select as "faves" in this video. Wouldn't make any sense otherwise as Daniel Smith carries just about every pigment and blend known in the world right now
Hey there, Elena! Thanks so much for your interest in supporting me on Patreon. :) I actually don't have a list as I have been shrinking the spots as people reduce their pledges because I need to get to the place where I'm only doing 1 hangout a week. So there will be a total of 15 for the hangout reward and 5 for the happy mail reward eventually. Thanks so much again for wanting to join!!! xoxo
For sure! I really wasn't a watercolor artist at first. Just wanted to plop some color in my journal and enjoyed having the convenience of the colors I love already mixed. I was not as motivated to paint if I had to mix something. But I love that everyone's journey takes them different places and buying just 3 cool primary colors and 3 warms will, like you said, allow hundreds of colors. Wonderful option for those on a budget or those who want to learn mixing right from the get go. Thank you so much for the tip and for watching! :)
Moonglow is my favourite Daniel Smith colour! Good skin tone mix for fair skin is titan buff and yellow ochre. You can add the tiniest. Touch of. Alizarin crimson to it to pink it up a little.
Omg the rainbow swatching. My heart went pitter patter
I love my Daniel Smith watercolors! I only own four of them and they are all from the genuine line but I love using them to do a little bit of watercoloring on my journal pages.

I just sent ya a DM on IG. Please don't think I'm a creeper. haha!!! ;)
Hey, I just wanted to let you know of an artist who paints all different skin tones. And she might be open to a commissioned piece. Her website is camillerene.com Check it out. She has cute animals with her girls. Like a fox or an owl. good luck
LOVE your channel!!!!! thanks for showing the Daniel smith vs. schminke jd colors! so fun!
I'm Daniel Smith obsessed. I have so many as well. I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the primatexs. They are to die for. I NEED the burnt sienna light color too. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and to post all the info and links too! I love your choice of favourites!
I, love Quin gold, for the beginning flesh tones, and it can go from light to beautiful darker skin tones.
It's one of my FAVES!!! Never tried it for a flesh tone though! I'll have to try now. Thanks for watching! :)
Sadly the original quinacridone gold was discontinued by the original manufacturer. There is now a mixture that resembles the single pigment.
Ok Ali I ordered 8 of them some of your favorites! Thank you so much for your recommendations and I was surprised you do not like your Schmincke set as much as you though you would
Awesome! I hope you enjoy them! Believe me! I was surprised too! haha! But I would have never known if I hadn't of tried them myself. :)
Im building my first palette and had it set in my mind i needed a vintage tin and spent hours looking. Yours is fantastic. Im going to get your colors first bc its driving me crazy trying to pick and yours are pretty.
Awww! I'm sorry you didn't find a tin! Have fun collecting your colors and thanks for watching!!! xoxo
I put my DS palette together with favorites from you, and Courtney (Little Raven Ink).
You had a lot of the same favorites. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, Ali! You are a fun blessing! I took many notes from this vid! : )
Where did you get the little artist tin?? Super Cute!!
I love your videos. I like your camera work in the beginning when you gave us a close up of your swatches and then it goes right down to the table shot, genius! :)
Ooops, not swatches, I meant pallette shot!
Thank you so much!!! :)

Thanks so much for correcting this southerner. haha! I'm so sorry your paints got thrown out. How traumatic. Thanks so much for watching! :)
@@AliBrownie I'm a southerner as well from southern Va.😁

Love your "sparklies" in the Amethyst comment! You are adorable.
I LOVE these colors too!
Thx for this video!! luv all the pretty colors...even tho I'm not really an Artist!! Ur making me want to use paints for backgrounds in my TN! :) mk
You should TOTALLY use them for your backgrounds. Splotchin' watercolor is SO cathartic! ;)
+Ali Brown. Yes....luv watchin ppl do the watercolours!! I only have some cheap set of tubes at this point tho. ha
+Ali Brown. Btw....do u have a video talkin bout the INKS you use for your Fountain pens? I'd luv to get something waterproof, like you use & paint over later?!? :)
I use Noodler's Lexington Gray for my FAVE waterproof ink. :)
Where is your watercolor tin from? I love it!!!
These are so beautiful. As a student I just can't shell out the money for these paints, and definitely not the schminka- but I will long for them from afar haha.

I appreciate your videos so much and today's is perfect timing for me! I'm finally going to submit my order....or tomorrow.....as I'm also planning to upgrade my brushes. Can you please share your faves?

I have some in pans, that's i how use them. They work perfectly fine. There may be a few exceptions with some pigments but I haven't had any problems.
"Note to self: don't lick the paint" 😂😂😂 thanks for the advice, Ali! Loved the video!
Haha! You're welcome!!! xoxo
Ali Brown what there not flavored😀
Love the quote!

Ali Brown they last a long long time and it is sooo much cheaper to buy the tubes

You're welcome! Master's Touch #8 Round. :)
Awesome. Thank you.
You're funny. Love the singing! Hope this helps ... Perhaps is pronounced 'thay-lo'.
YAAAASSSS!!!! THANK YOU!!!! I have been wonderin' how to say that for a couple years! hahaha! ;)
I loved the review & I’m sold! However for the cost of the half pans + shipping of $3.44 on each individual pan, you can purchase a whole tube of paint on Amazon
I have never seen Daniel Smith paints that cheap for a tube. Can you link your Amazon find? I'm super intrigued! Thanks so much for watching! :)
Ali Brown it depends on the color, but on Amazon 15ml tubes run from $9 to $18. With Prime, I get free 2 day shipping.
www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001PT8XA4/ref=gwm_tlc_pi?pf_rd_p=390f98e5-295c-4720-be21-c25f9965f6be&pf_rd_s=grid-6&pf_rd_t=Gateway&pf_rd_i=mobile&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=02YWY7SDWCN3X5W7EC3Y&pd_rd_i=B001PT8YAS&th=1&psc=1

hi ali, amazonite is pronounced am-ah-zo-nite, there is only one o in it. thanks for sharing, love your choices. :D
The Schminke are way cheaper than the Daniel Smith or am I missing something?
Schminke are more expensive than Daniel Smith.
That sucks, it's the other way round over here.
Yeah, Schmincke is very affordable compared to Daniel Smith
You can find D.S. half pans on Etsy if you want to buy just some, not the whole tube.
daniel smith is only cheaper inside the us. everywhere else, schimnke is cheaper.

I prefer schmincke's vermilion light to d's quien coral. It glows more, to me. It is PR 122.
Hey. Great vid. And a note about quinacridone gold. Daniel Smith is the only REAL PO49 q gold. All of the others are just mixtures of 3 or 4 other colors that you can mix yourself.
Oh that's good to know!!! :)
Not anymore. They ran out of the Q Gold. I believe when it was all gone they had a funeral. :'(
The colors themselves are pretty but there aren't enough basics to mix a wide range of colors. I guess this is more for craft painting.
they have and essential set 3warm primary 3cool primary
Macario 438 they have247 colors
Yes. I assume she was referring to the color choices select as "faves" in this video. Wouldn't make any sense otherwise as Daniel Smith carries just about every pigment and blend known in the world right now
yeah her pallete is made up of mostly special or not commonly used colors. Not a bad thing, just a bit unusual.
I just landed on your channel. You are hilarious.
Totally not water color related...what color eyeshadow do you have on your eyes? 😍
An excellent question! It looks beautiful on you Ali!
Thank you!!! I use Make Up Geek shadows. I believe I have 'Last Dance' all over the lid and under my bottom lash line. :)
Thank you so so much! I believe I have 'Last Dance' from Make Up Geek all over the lid and under my bottom lash line. :)
i’ve been trying so hard to find the Naples Yellow Reddish but I can’t find it anywhere! please help!
Have you tried Blick online store?
What brush do you use?
A Master's Touch Round #12 from Hobby Lobby..you can often find them on sale. :)
"note to self: don't lick the paint" LOL
What class did you take to learn how to mix colors?
Jane Davenports 'Wonderland' watercolor class. :)
Hi Ali how do I find the list of your water colors???
It's in the description box!
@1:31 --> Sweeeet transition
I like your channel , you're a sweetie x
Hi Ali! Do you have a wait list for your Patreon Google hangouts level? If so, I'd love to be added to that list please! :)
Thanks so much again for wanting to join!!! xoxo
I totally understand - thanks Ali!
New here! You're so funny :)
😘
You can mix colors you know to get that Naples Yellow... or whatever other colors you want... all you need are 6 colors to make hundreds...
For sure! I really wasn't a watercolor artist at first. Just wanted to plop some color in my journal and enjoyed having the convenience of the colors I love already mixed. I have gotten more into mixing recently, but when I first started, it was important for me personally to just start quickly and not stress about knowing how to mix. :)
has 88 profesional watercolor paints
reviews her swatches on printer paper
um
wut
Sweetie, that's not printer paper. There are different weights of watercolor paper and I was using a lighter weight. Thanks for watching!
Guess what? You too have an "ethnic skin type."
