16:24 WAYWARD CHILDREN IS SO FUN CHARLIE. It’s like portal fantasy about kids who have shitty lives for some reason and find a door to a world where they fit better. Definitely read this series at least give the first 2 a try they’re also novellas so very short and quick 🔥
@ some of the books take place at Elenor’s school for wayward children and some of them take place in the other worlds it’s a nice overarching connection while you also learn about each individual kids story :)
20:16 I think personally the best place to start with Frederick Bachman is with “and every morning the way home gets longer and longer” it’s extremely short and will give you a hard and fast taste of his prose and style of writing. It will also make you cry (most likely) 😂
Have you introduced your dog before? What a cutie! I just picked up The Lies of Locke Lamora and I'm loving it so far. I'm a huge fan of con artist characters/stories. From what I've heard about that series, the individual books are pretty self-contained even if the series is unfinished. I was about to give my summary of True Biz but then you read my review. 🥰
Haha not yet actually! His name is Bagel and he is very polite. Glad to hear you’re liking Lies of Locke Lamora! I’ve heard really good things about Also I was glad to see that you got to learn about deaf culture in True Biz. It’s a wonderful culture really.
Fredrik Backman is my favorite author and Beartown is my favorite book by far. Has been for 4 years now. Also, this is literally the first video I have ever watched of your, tbh the first time I've ever perceived you, and I gotta say, your voice is very soothing.
Would you say Beartown is the place to start with him then? And I’m so glad to hear that! I appreciate you watching and I hope you’ll stick around for more 🙂
Dead Silence got onto my TBR somehow too and I tell myself the same thing you did whenever I'm looking for stuff to cut. Spooky space looks neat so it stays
38:57 READ R F KUANG IMMEDIATELY lol I love all of her books (I’ve read them all) they’re all so different from each other but her writing is fabulous and I love how brazen she is with her themes and ideas
I feel like subconsciously my brain won’t let me read them because it doesn’t want to be wrong about how sure I am that I’ll love them. That doesn’t make any sense but I never said my brain made sense.
Atlas Six is one of my absolute favorites. It WAS getting a lot of attention and hype a couple years ago, but since then it's gotten backlash, thus the very mixed reviews. People tend to either love it or hate it. I love it (but really didn't like the sequel)
@@charlie-read-a-book The backlash is to how incredibly hyped the book was (especially booktok) It's a very character focused book so when the masses got to it, some people thought "nothing happens" and were annoyed. I can't say it's a functional standalone, but I love the characters and the concept so much it's still a favorite for me. It introduced me to Olivie Blake. Her prose and character writing are so amazing that I think you need to try SOMETHING of hers, even if not this one. This Is her only series, so you can pick up any of her other books without issue. I'd personally recommend Alone With You In The Ether.
I know you’ve already heard good things about Something Is Killing the Children but just want to add another +1 to it!! It’s probably my second favorite comic series after Saga, and it has a spinoff series House of Slaughter that’s just as good!!
I'm very curious. What are your criterion for Classic when it comes to books? I had to think about that hard myself when I started up my list. And so far, I've been very pleased by what I've chosen. Dark Matter is where I started, and I loved it. I'm now looking at Upgrade and Recursion. I'll be curious to hear what you think of Dark Matter when you get to it. I did enjoy Winter's Orbit, but it's very much a gay romance, just set on an alien world. I don't think it's a must read, definitely.
You know honestly I haven’t thought much of how I define that haha - if it feels like an older book that I’ve heard a lot of people talk about then I just sort of passively think of it as a classic I guess. I’ll definitely talk about it when I make it to Dark Matter! I’m going to try my hand at some review videos soon so I’ll make sure that one gets a review for you after I read it.
1:03:29 I have shadow of what was lost like 2 ⭐️ there’s nothing inherently bad or offensive it was just…. Kinda boring and the characters felt like bystanders 🤷🏻♀️
You should 1000 percent read death note. Imho it has nothing do with whether you end up liking Uzumaki or not. Also, cutting hxh is crazy. Some of the best wordlbuilding and Character writing in manga. If you're looking for a phenomenal story thats FINISHED - go with attack on titan.
Great video. I like the new graphics and end music bit (the opening was nice too, but a bit more chill). Not too many comments from me this week (phew!) but I did want to recommend another booktuber who did a Swamp Thing readalong of the Alan Moore run. I read along with it, even though I had very little interest in Swamp Thing previously and really enjoyed it. Oh thank you I spent waaaaaaayyyy too long on them so I’m glad to know they got noticed! I always appreciate your expansive comments haha! Thanks for the Swamp thing link - I’ll check out that channel for sure!
CHARLIE. YOU TAKE THAT BLASPHEME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH! but you may actually like Islingtons other works. Its more old man fantasy Also I have heard from someone I trust that the forgetting moon doesnt do women well
I knew you’d have words for me 🫣 But I said I liked it! I just wanted to loooove it. But ok maybe I’ll try his other books. Good to know about forgetting moon
I’m removing them all for now because I don’t want to have all of his books cluttering my TBR. I only need one on the list, and then after I read that I can decide if I want to add another. I don’t know if I like his stuff yet.
0:07 I’ve never seen this dog a day in my life and I would die for them
Hahaha Bagel says thank you
Flames of Mira is very underrated! Don't let its rating fool you!
I fully believe that! You’ve sold me on the book I think years ago haha I don’t know how I haven’t gotten to it yet!
Your intro and outtro are incredible btw 👏🏻 the cinematography 🤌🏻
Thanks so much! I will never admit to you how long they took me so I’m glad to get the positive feedback 😂

I LOVE THE INTRO 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!!! I had help from my friend Rae.

Oh okay awesome - I’ve gotten very very into short stories and novellas in the last couple years so that kind of sounds perfect.
@ this book made my best friend cry and she’s one of those “soulless heart of stone” people who never cries. lol good luck!!
I was so worried when I saw Eye of the World pop up, but I'm glad you didn't delete it 😅
I’m not trying to get cancelled
Love the new intro!!
Thanks glad to hear it!

Oh wow ok thanks for all that! I have heard with alone with you in the ether - didn’t realize it was this author. Appreciate the recommendation!
The movie 'Arrival' is based on the short story 'Story of Your Life' by Ted Chiang. Recommended.
Oooh ok - I think I own his short story collection Exhalations. It’s… somewhere in this house… I think?
@@charlie-read-a-book - oooh, not sure if it's in that collection. I have it in Stories of Your Life and Others.
