2001 Dura Lube 400: Start + Dale Jr.'s crash

- The green flag comes out to begin the 2001 Dura Lube 400 at Rockingham, but is quickly displaced by the yellow when Dale Earnhardt Jr. crashes in turn 3 of lap 1, to the dismay of fans still grieving the loss of his father one week earlier. Kenny Wallace and Mike Wallace are also involved.
The clip also features Fox's first silent Lap 3, a gesture performed for the remainder of the season as a tribute to Dale, and an interview with Earnhardt Jr. following the crash. - Авто/Мото
"this cannot be happening to that young man" Chokes me up everytime
Same
Listen to Mike Joy's voice @ 1:56, he almost broke up describing it. That's exactly how i felt watching it...
God him choking up choked me up
1:54. His voice cracked almost like he was glumly remembering what happened the week before. Who wouldn't?
He sounded the just the same when Earnhardt lined pit road after he won the 500. A truly good friend to their family.
Crash was extremely similar to Senior’s. This gave me chills.
It’s so eerie how similar his crash was to his dad’s.
I was only 9 when dale died. even though i was young i understood that dale had lost his life and i pretty well realized how people felt (i felt horrible because he was my favorite driver, still is). I remember this weekend nobody really knew how to feel there was just an emptiness and it was almost like nobody could understand or figure out why
I know what you mean i was the same age when it happened I remember finding out when dale had passed later that night it didn’t sink in until Monday that I basically watched the man die on live tv rockingham definitely had a strange feeling to it
Dale jr is one of a kind. Dealt with his last name, fathers passing, pressure, media, DEI drama and still held it together to be a first ballot HOF
1st race without Dale Earnhardt in it since 1978.
Safe to say that was probably the saddest lap 3 of the bunch.
This crash makes Steve Park’s victory in this race seem even more necessary than it already was.
It looked like small version of senior crash
It sure does!
JPGKid he ment to be that way
JPGKid that’s the point
Scary
I think Waltrip felt worse about the wreck than Jr. did. I still feel his emotion whenever I hear his voice go from elation that his little brother won the Daytona 500 to fear and worry for his former bitter rival turned friend when he noticed that the window net wasn't down the week before this. I never liked Earnhardt Sr., but even I hated to see him go the way he did.
You got what you wanted woman abuser deadbeat
??
@@Paranormal_Gaming_ dude just because he didnt like dale SR doesnt mean you cant just start screaming at him and making him feel bad jeez
I saw this live as a kid. It was pretty awkward. I remember everyone being so sullen. It was very weird.
I bet. In lieu of recent events.
How does new hampshire have a race in the chase, Rockingham would be so much better!!
weird crash..angle of impact was very similar to Dale Sr's crash..Obviously at a lot slower speed though.
Thank God for that
Dale Jr.'s crash here is literally (if not, just about) the same as Dale Sr.'s crash.
Very similar. I'm sure the crowd felt the same.
A regular speedway track version of it, if that makes sense.
Evan Williams A regular speedway version of Daytona? Yes!
Dale Jr was embarrassed that it looked anything like the crash that killed his father
Fortunately he hit at a much lower speed, car had a chance to lose momentum before it hit unlike with his father. Notice he didn't budge from that seat when he crashed. Imagine how hard Dale Sr must have been thrown forward, and he was larger and heavier than his son.
Everyone complains about DW, sorry but Id rather listen to someone who's heart is in this sport rather than some fuckin robots that work for the monopoly that is ESPN
He was the best
crazy to see that only 11 years ago they didnt require front visors on helmets or helmets on pit crew members over the wall. im 20 now and thinking about how far the sport has come in what seems like a short amount of time is wild
There's no credible sources that has ever determined if a full face helmet actually saved anyone's life in a stockcar.
Was at this race i live 20 min frrom Rockingham and used to go to every race there was just a sloem mood that day it was quite an experience and tbis crash right at the start of the race just a very strange and slolem mood that day ill never forget it
You're right....never noticed it until now. Same angle same location on the track. I saw this live and was so heartbroken for Jr. Even if you're not a fan of him personally anybody who can't empathize with everything he went through needs to take a LONG look in the mirror.
Jeez. I'm just finding out about this now. I never knew Dale Jr. had this happen to him. This looks just like his dad's crash
More than that. #40, who was the one who bumped his dad's car, was right infront of him when Jr. went into the wall... Damn I can only imagine what went through Jr's head during that moment....
You hear mikes voice break when he says the word wall
Thank you for posting this. I hadn't seen this since it aired. Sounds like Mike Joy got choked up when describing the crash. Eerily similar to the Dale Sr. crash only one week before.
I was at this race. That crash sucked
Man 95.7 wkml and 94.7 wqdr, radio stations I hadn't heard of in a while.
they probably switched formats or were bought out
Do you have Waltrip's interview with Helton during the pre-race?
"And from the last lap of last Sunday to the first lap of this"
Gives me chills 😢
The moment this wreck happened I had to walk away from the TV. I was 8 at the time and Sr was my hero growing up and he's passing hit me hard. Seeing the lil similarities a turn 4 crash hitting the wall very similar and that hood popping up I went too my bedroom to just get myself together.
@tylerebill Ya man upload it!!! Would love to see it, do you have the pre race too??
can someone post the pre-race show from this race? that was one of the most emotional, and i remember bits of it, but i'd like to see it again.

Animated Characters and The 2001 Dura Lube 400
You can hear Mike Joy & Darrell Waltrip’s voice crack. I don’t know how they held it together.
2:08 was a big collective sigh of relief once they say Dale Jr. moving around in the race car
this was the hardest race to watch... i about lost it when jr wrecked... shoutout to jr for keeping his composure like that...
so this is how cranking up started with the 3 lap
I don't think so. I remember seeing Crank It Up in the Gatorade 125 Duels that year
Before the green flag during one of the pace laps did you see Jeff Gordon give up the pole position in honor of Dale? That is when I gained so much respect for him.
I guess the track announcer was exempt from the "silent lap 3" idea. Nice to see they did the same thing at the 2011 Daytona; missed the race but saw the video the next day.
Anyone have the prerace?
@SilentPsych2012 That was Ron Hornaday, not Sam Hornish.
who was driving the kodak car?
@LostHighwayFilms there were 4 tracks in the carolinas, nascar wanted to spread out. so they stopped going to north wilkesboro and rockingham
A forgotten Dale Jr. crash.
Was there that day, was a very wet weekend. Race was postponed and finished on Monday. Very strange atmosphere at the track that weekend, people just walked around literally like zombies.
The fact that Sterling Marlin as passed by Jr just before he wrecked is pretty creepy.
Plus the #29 was right behind him.
This was so heartbreaking.
3:45 #3 on Jr's Dash. I wonder if he put that there after Daytona or if it was always there?
5:58 waltrip has it on his too, it’s probably because of the wreck
@SonicXisnow2009 they did the crank it up at daytona in '01 as well, it came before dale's death
@kingofrunescapepking thats what i was thinking when i saw the replay its weird how this has been 10 years ago but feels like yesterday
It happened at a much slower speed than the Daytona crash. The speeds at Rockingham in the corners are about 40 mph slower, and he had already taken a couple hits before touching the wall.
@EarnhardtsYear08 yeah actually i have the whole pre race and the race up until the posteponement (if thats a word) but sadly i dont have day 2 (the finish)
This was eerie. And it rained a little while after that? It really makes you wonder.
The early 2001 NASCAR season was terrible, we lost the hero of NASCAR, just a week later, his son crashed in a similar way (this crash), most of races was gruesome and boring
2001 was a very miserable year for me in general. i was in 4th-5th grade. it was just a very depressing year.
@@pashedmotatos I don't that so. I was born in 2006, but for me disappointing year was 2011 and 2017
when i first saw this crash i almost cried. probably one of the worst moments that i've seen in nascar.
I agree, the early 2001 season was terrible, and this was race was so boring
6-17-2012 NO CRASH FOR SALE JR TODAY ONLY A CHECKERED FLAG AND A AWESOME VICTORY!!!!! CONGRATS DALE, STEVE, AND MR. H ON ONE HELL OF A VICTORY... AND TO ALL THE HATERS: HE'S ONLY GETTING STARTED
MRN was not doing that tribute.
Too bad the loudspeakers are blaring during the silent lap three.
The silent lap 3 was only for the TV networks not the radio networks or the track.
i meant that by the angle at which he hit. they both hit the wall at a similar angle
it was coming over the track p.a. while they were staying silent for lap 3
wow i miss dale
very similar to Earnhardt Sr.'s last lasp crash in the 500 a week earlier.
this was the hardest race to watch...
Look at the way the car behaves in this wreck and then look at Dale Earnhardt's fatal accident. In both wrecks, the car swerves left then shoots up the track nose first into the wall. Granted there were different circumstances that cause each accident but the way the car acted in both wrecks was eerily similar.
i agree rockingham has really exciting racing
no way i could have been composed in that situation, i would have been sobbing like crazy :(
Man that's heartbreaking
That crash didn't looked so bad at all
@@unknown0508 no, but you gotta remember this was the race after Earnhardt Sr. died. Not to mention the wreck looked eerily similar to his dad's fatal crash.
The way he crashes just like his dad did is crazy
Yikes! That was scary. Almost like his Dad's. :(
I wasn’t alive then but rip dale sr and rip the rock I live 2 seconds away from there
Exactly..Jr is a very unassuming and down to earth guy, he never talks crap.the haters are normally just jelous..
@JJ48524 Not to say he didnt hit his steering wheel or no other injurys would of been a factor in his death, including the failed seat belt, but the reason he died was the lack of the HANS device which would of prevented his spinal cord from seperating from his brain stem which caused him to bled out in seconds, Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin, Jr. died months apart from each other as a result of the same injurys the previous year, they both wore a full faced helmet, but hit the wall head on causing
ive been to the rockingham speedway and it is a very fast and exciting track
I have this whole race taped let me know if you would like it uploaded
I feel so sorry for Dale Jr
The hit that Dale Jr. took in the wall was strangely similar to the one that took his dad's life the week before, obviously at much lower speed. Scary how this stuff played out in 2001, though.
this was the hardest race to watch... i about lost it when jr wrecked...
A little fitting that the very first Lap “3” happened under caution
maybe the dude didn't know. i mean, it was the first week they did this since Dale's passing. it could have been a TV thing but i assumed it caught later on during the season.
@JJ48524 well remember after sr crahed the hans devise was manditory soo his head wont his the steering wheel so the don worry about that
Now that crash looked eerily very similar to his fathers crash a week ago
Poor Guy!!!!!
@LostHighwayFilms Rockingham's not really near a big city, and they were having a hard time getting enough people to attend the races here.
Yeah, I really thought it was OK putting Cali second on the schedule but the way things are now, California shouldn't be 2 on the schedule.
thank god for the Safer barrier.
I give a lot of credit for Michael and Steve Park for not going after Ron Hornaday. I like Hornaday, but I would've had so much anger built up inside of me if I were Michael or Steve and I would've gone after Ron. Accident or not, I would've had so many emotions going through my head.
the angle he hit the wall kinda creeps me out.
i remember going to this race... very emotional day.... i still have that #3 triangle flag that fan hold up at beginning of race.... sea of black
As they say that all the good times are behind us no more good races like that
That's too bad.
@JJ48524 the head to keep moving tearing the brain stem away from the spinal cord.
@ChrisMolyneaux93 it looked like he crashed at same angle as his daddy
2:54 dale jr crash watch at 1.50 to see the cars at normal speed
One of those odd people showing respect makes it harder to get in that race car and go to the track kind of things. Can’t ever get a break from that reminder he’s gone, I get what jr meant
Sounds like Mike Joys about to cry @1:53
You can hear Mike Joy's voice crack as he tries to hold himself together as he's announcing that Dale jr. Is hit the wall
Mike Joy
@Blizfam they are actually.
hell yeah!!!!!
He should not have been there. Its hard for anyone to lose a loved one and its clear he still was unable to focus. They should have given him time off to grieve.
I was there sunday, and monday.
Jr.'s overrated, but this isn't the right video to be barking about him. That's just sick.
nascarfanatic2425 He is not overrated, I never hear a Jr fan say "Jr has the most wins" and "he is the most talented."
nascarfanatic2425 imagine on this video saying that but then saying this isn’t the right video to bark about him. If you were smart you would of just said this isn’t the right video to bark about him but you decided to say he’s overrated and shit on this video which is not the right video to say that.
@@GiovanniTiradoGT Oh, you would've loved my ex-girlfriend. 😂
@@tamezzodiac2862 It's called freedom of speech. I didn't say Jr. sucked; I said he was overrated. There's a difference.
If Jr. was just flat out terrible, I would say he sucks.
I said he was overrated; which means he didn't perform to expectations.
Also, nice job taking 7 years to come up with that reply. Back then, my T-shirts were all orange, and the president was black.
nascarfanatic2425 actually didn’t see this till today and you said this isn’t the place for shit like that but still did you you hypocrite.
I felt so bad for Jr here.
