when you started to cut the edges - I was ready to cry but when you put those edges as a backsplash - I became speechless !!!!!!!!!!!!! :-) :-) INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!
Trenton, OH native here -- glad to hear about OLG! Beautiful craftsmanship my friend. Thanks for sharing as you learn! Love to see this kind of stuff in my own backyard so to speak. Stay safe!
The will of RUclips I guess -- love watching DIYers. I watch lots of folks do Epoxy, live edge crafts, woodworking from log splitting down to the craft with big tools and hand tools. RUclips gave me your video suggested marked by area I believe, marked "Dayton".
I don't have (and never did) the skills with woodworking that many have and have regretted it for years. Watching you work with this maple and seeing how you gave it the treatment that it deserves calmed some of my angst. It's good for the soul to see discarded wood (or anything) being given another chance. This may not be a masterpiece according to naysayers, but to me it shines!
It's never too late to start woodworking. Almost everything in that sawmill is a saved tree that otherwise would have been mulch, firewood or buried in a landfill.
Gorgeous! I was gifted several 3" thick beams from an old warehouse that I'm planning on having made into my kitchen countertops. Seeing yours finished only makes me more excited to get mine done.
I could smell the wood being cut from here. My tree cutter always knows how profoundly sad I get when I lose a tree. Good for you for preserving the beauty this tree provided and will live on in your cabin.
Nice. I did like the live edge backsplash. As for the cutouts, your on the right path. Mount the template, drill the corners, cut out the bulk with saw 1/4"+ inside the template, cleanup with the router. Its nice to have friends with good tools.
That turned out really nice. There is just something about making things out of wood that is totally satisfying and good for the soul. Every piece of wood is different, and to me is what makes the final finish of the job so gratifying. Al
That kid in you is coming out Bro!! I get it!! It's cool to watch a person who works with wood. The way they run their hands along the wood, often. I can tell you know that it's alive even when it's dead. When you applied the oil, the magic happened. You are an artist my friend. It's Beautiful!!! I loved every minute of this video.
Looks beautiful I got mad when you cut off the Live Edge then I tell you to turn it into the back splash super cool. The other thing is my dad taught me at a very early age if your borrow something you put it back just as good if not better than when you found it.
Ha, don't worry I wouldn't want to waste something like that. I was glad to bel able to incorporate it. Mixing clean lines with the rustic live edge made me happy.
Looking forward to the counter-top installation video. Enjoyed all the work that was done to turn this slab of maple that was destined for the landfill or to become mulch into a beautiful kitchen countertop with a live-edge backsplash. Good work.
!!! ART !!! Mike that turned out beautifully, the bow-ties, the epoxy, ALL OF IT. The stove & sink cut-outs made me cry a little, but it had to be done, maybe make some cutting boards out of them. Great video & another awesome project. p.s. Hi to Barrett, he's doing amazing sustainable reclamation work.
I am glad to hear that Mike, the slabs really are the star of the show. One surfaced, you can almost do anything to them and they will still be beautiful.
when you first started I thought this was going to be a beautiful dining table...I guess needs must, really glad you saved the backsplash feature! Great Job.
I was glad to see you oil the top instead of an epoxy finish..I just did an epoxy countertop finish and had a lot of issues, it is much harder than you would think to get it right. Beautiful work and love the live backsplash idea!(I may steal it)
Thanks Randy, yea I like finishes that are easy to apply and forgiving as well. Thats why I also like the linseed, turpentine and spar urethane mixture because it's almost impossible to screw up. Feel free to steal the live edge backsplash, I probably stole it from someone else!
Omigosh, so perfect! So sorry I didn't see this before. Surgery and drugged-up stupor. Saw it in the notifications under meds, and when I came-to thought, "Wasn't there a video from Mike to see?" Looked through and couldn't see it in the dashboard or notifications and figured it was the stupor playing tricks on me. Thanks for mentioning it in the most recent video... would've totally missed this killer video! For a little longer, anyways. Love watching you play woodworking, and thanks for telling us why you do the steps you do. The whole just-do-this without explanation from other youtubers leaves a lot of knowledge gaps. So love your videos, Mike! Consider making a sink insert for more counter space with that sink cutout... maybe a cutting board insert... space saving and functional. See if you can find a CNC-owning friend to make an inlay of your logo. :D
... inlay in walnut to match! Or even some of your leftover resin! You should totally check-out @EvanAndKatelyn. They make a lot of things with resin, and they're hilarious to watch.
Oh boy hope your surgery went well. Hopefully this distracted you a bit during recovery. The sink insert/cutting board is what I am leaning towards. CNC logo would be awesome. I know a guy with one but will have to see if he could do it for me.
Totaly agree, those small imperfections give it a character, me neither like handmade stuff that look like cut on CNC. Great projects, first time here, will watch more!
I was disappointed when I saw you cut off the live edge, but then you put it on as the backsplash I was like damn that's awesome. Looks beautiful, great work.
haha thanks Joe, I've got quite a few angry comments from people who I think stopped watching at that point! If they made it to the end they would be happy.
Hi Mike, Just another masterpiece, and in more than one way! I hope you patent-protected the backsplash idea (lol) ‘cause it’s a great idea ! Can’t wait to see the install. For the rest it was just another great video with your unique blend of self-mockery, modesty and humour whilst actually doing genuinely impressive work. At time there was also Oscar-worth mastery of the cam in the way your hands and work were being filmed ! May you be thanked for sharing this with us. Pierre
That's prettier then a litter of new born puppies, now you have to make a mini replica with cutouts for the dogs food and water bowls. Maybe even a bourbon and whiskey rack. Great work Mike. I love using reclaimed items when ever I can to keep things out of landfills.
I like that saying Mark, I like those ideas, cant wait to get started on something with those cut outs! Yea, the thought of that tree just getting mulched or buried... I cant.
It turned out really beautiful! Thank you Kittering, Ohio. My sister use to live there when she was an attorney for Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur Law Firm in Dayton!
It was worth paying for imo, we have a router sled in our shop but we’d have had to make a bigger one or spend forever doing it by hand! And the sink cutout came out pretty good by the way. I could not find the same bit that you had but managed to make it work.
For outdoor tools things as simple as taking a pressure washer to them and hitting the grease points before you return them can insure they keep letting you use the tools.
I love baby walrus oil. You can only get a small amount from each walrus, so it takes 100s of walruses to get enough to finish a countertop. Beautiful results, well worth it!
You could make a couple of great charcuterie boards out of the sink cutout, and another one out of that end cutoff too! Plenty of pieces to auction off! There are huge mature trees like that all over Kettering and Oakwood and other parts of old Dayton too. Your buddy has an amazing resource for his business. I might have to make the trip over there to visit him!
Oh yea those are great ideas, the possibilities are endless! You should head over there and grab some lumber it's really a neat place. He is the least busy during the week in the mornings. He will have more time to talk then. On the weekends he is usually slammed with business.
Beautiful ! You could use the other live edge for the front drop . You are doing a wonderful job . I have used a chrome wrench to rub on my walking sticks to make the surface shinny before I finished it too . Keep up the great work . "Deeds not words"
Damn Dude, ....that.... is.... nice!! These are the type of projects and the enjoyment of being able to look at that forever that make the tedious parts of the build well worth it. Rock on man.
What a beautiful piece of wood, great job on finishing. How nerve racking cutting holes into the wood?!! Definitely cool to see the butterfly install and epoxy application. Look forward to the install.
Beautiful, I want to make a kitchen counter and an island out of white birch and this is the way I want to go after seeing the awesome job you have dine! Cheers!!!
Nice looking project; I am curious to see follow-up videos on these slab countertops after 5 or 10 years to see how they've behaved-or not. Guessing there could be unwanted movement, additional cracking, cupping, twisting, or similar effects of humidity/dryness cycles, temperature swings, and daily use.
Fantastic! Really good explanation and camera work as well. For someone who claims to not be a professional your craftsmanship is top notch in my opinion.
Your dedication to transforming this slab, from a potentially discarded tree, into an "artistic feature" is incredible. The use of the live edge as a backsplash will make the finished product even more outstanding as if improving the natural beauty of the "top" was required. With respect to the attachment of the backsplash to the top did you ever consider the use of pocket screws? I have become a "fan" of using them for tight and secure joints where virtually seamless joints make the difference.
Beautiful piece of wood. Fascinated with bow ties. Maple table top from the extra. Or use it to set on top of stove when not in use to make more counter top
Awesome piece of work there. The backsplash made it even better. Matching cutting boards would be cool from the cutout pieces. Watching your video gave me the courage to do it for my new kitchen island project. Again, great job!
when you started to cut the edges - I was ready to cry but when you put those edges as a backsplash - I became speechless !!!!!!!!!!!!! :-) :-) INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!
haha yea don't worry I wouldn't waste that feature!
Dude, totally thought the same!!!
Ona Babona Yep you nailed it, I thought exactly the same.
And ... same here. That's a brilliant way to use the live edge cutoff.
I was like what are you doing?😥
A guy with skills built that slab business from nothing. Great content, and thanks for showing us how these counters are done.
Trenton, OH native here -- glad to hear about OLG! Beautiful craftsmanship my friend. Thanks for sharing as you learn! Love to see this kind of stuff in my own backyard so to speak. Stay safe!
Hey nice man, just out of curiosity how'd you find me?
The will of RUclips I guess -- love watching DIYers. I watch lots of folks do Epoxy, live edge crafts, woodworking from log splitting down to the craft with big tools and hand tools.
RUclips gave me your video suggested marked by area I believe, marked "Dayton".
as a former woodworker, it was such a joy watching you work
Thank you Im glad you enjoyed it.
As a cabinet and clock maker I recognize your talent, I bow to you sir...................
Wow, thanks Martin that means a lot to me. I can't wait to do some more projects.
I don't have (and never did) the skills with woodworking that many have and have regretted it for years. Congrats Diana, it will be really fun to see how they look surfaced and shined up.
I could smell the wood being cut from here. My tree cutter always knows how profoundly sad I get when I lose a tree. Good for you for preserving the beauty this tree provided and will live on in your cabin.
It is sad isn't it. I have a hard time even cutting the junipers at my property down.
I was at OLG about three months ago! Great place. The owner spent a LOT of time helping me find just the right black cherry boards for my project!
Nice. I did like the live edge backsplash. As for the cutouts, your on the right path. Mount the template, drill the corners, cut out the bulk with saw 1/4"+ inside the template, cleanup with the router. Its nice to have friends with good tools.
Thanks Gary, thats what I will do on the next one for sure.
That turned out really nice. There is just something about making things out of wood that is totally satisfying and good for the soul. Every piece of wood is different, and to me is what makes the final finish of the job so gratifying. Al
Thank you Al. I 100% feel the same way about working with wood.
Looking great
Never bored with fine woodworking! Awesome job!!!
Thanks Al!
It's awesome to see you take the time to do this right. LOVE how you made the backsplash!!!
Thank you Dave!
You have the perfect tool for cutting out the Top for the Sink Bowl , the Festool Plunge Saw .
Yes it worked great, only issues was not having the correct blade for the job, too many teeth on the one I had.
great job
That kid in you is coming out Bro!! I get it!! It's cool to watch a person who works with wood. The way they run their hands along the wood, often. Incredibly awesome...great piece of art for many generations to enjoy in your family. Great job!
Thank you Emily!
Very nice, good job! Don't forget to finish the edges and back side.
JIM
Thanks Jim will do
Well done! I've gained such an appreciation for these slabs, their history and the people who mill and save them. Beautiful.
I am glad to hear that Mike, the slabs really are the star of the show. One surfaced, you can almost do anything to them and they will still be beautiful.
when you first started I thought this was going to be a beautiful dining table...I guess needs must, really glad you saved the backsplash feature! Great Job.
Turned out beautiful. I agree with your comment about something from a machine. Imperfections make it perfect...
Thank you
IMO, woodworking is your best skill...love your countertop!
Thank you!
I'm 70 y/o and very little impresses me anymore, but this beautiful piece of art did. Eager to see the installation.
Wow thank you for the compliment, glad you liked it.
What a great business and a great story!
What this video really needed was more bow-tie!
haha more bow tie!!!
Very nice work. It is nice to see that you leave the mistakes in and also how you both correct and learn from them. Cheers .
Thank you Kerry
You seem to be in your element when you are woodworking. Excellent job!
It's really calming. I enjoy it a lot.

My friend that is a beautiful piece of wood you did a great job with. You truly did it Justice.
Thank you Cecil
Wow! Great work and better results!
Thank you!
It turned out beautiful! Make yourself a cutting board with the cutoffs. Can't wait to see it installed.
Thank you Gail, I certainly will!
You did a fantastic job be proud of your self looks great
Totaly agree, those small imperfections give it a character, me neither like handmade stuff that look like cut on CNC. Great projects, first time here, will watch more!
Hi Igor, thank you and welcome to the channel.
Nice work,
Absolutely beautiful!
It's always a trip and a bit of a Head Rush when there is absolutely no room for error.
Thank you, there were a lot of those moments in this one!
Great job and great choice. The live edge backsplash is a killer idea. I know it is going look awesome in your cabin and what a conversation piece!
Thanks @G Bruce!
I was disappointed when I saw you cut off the live edge, but then you put it on as the backsplash I was like damn that's awesome. Looks beautiful, great work.
haha thanks Joe, I've got quite a few angry comments from people who I think stopped watching at that point! If they made it to the end they would be happy.
the grain is incredible in that slab! Wow!! what a great find! loving the woodmizer!
Thank you, the beautiful wood makes it really easy. That woodmizer is a neat piece of machinery thats for sure.
Hi Mike,
Just another masterpiece, and in more than one way!
I hope you patent-protected the backsplash idea (lol) ‘cause it’s a great idea ! Can’t wait to see the install.

Thank you Ed
Wow! Wow! Wow! That is just beautiful. Can't wait to see it in your cabin! Can't wait to see your wife's face when she sees it!
Thank you Rebecca
That Slab Mizer sure made short work of what took me weeks with the planer and sander. Really beautiful job
It was worth paying for imo, we have a router sled in our shop but we’d have had to make a bigger one or spend forever doing it by hand! And the sink cutout came out pretty good by the way. I could not find the same bit that you had but managed to make it work.
@@50Acres Yeah it looks awesome, and nobody will ever know your secret, well apart from the video evidence :)
For outdoor tools things as simple as taking a pressure washer to them and hitting the grease points before you return them can insure they keep letting you use the tools.
Good tip, I always try to give them back better than I got them.
I love baby walrus oil. You can only get a small amount from each walrus, so it takes 100s of walruses to get enough to finish a countertop. Beautiful results, well worth it!
Lol too funny Pat
That came out real nice, I'd love to have that in my kitchen nice work.
Thanks Bruce
You never disappoint brother. Nice work. Can't wait to see the install. Don't keep us waiting too long.
Thank you glad you enjoyed it

Wow. What a awesome piece of wood, once my home gets to this stage my contractor will be in touch with him. Love the work you’re doing with your home.
Thanks Christopher, appreciate it!

That cut out would make a sweet cutting board.
Beautiful ! You could use the other live edge for the front drop . You are doing a wonderful job . I have used a chrome wrench to rub on my walking sticks to make the surface shinny before I finished it too . Keep up the great work . "Deeds not words"
I still have the other edge and I will certainly incorporate it somewhere!
That is one hell of a counter top !!!! Nice job. 🙌
Thanks!
Damn Dude, ....that.... is.... nice!! These are the type of projects and the enjoyment of being able to look at that forever that make the tedious parts of the build well worth it. Rock on man.

Definitely cool to see the butterfly install and epoxy application.
Look forward to the install.
Thank you Chuck, it was definitely scary cutting into it! Glad you liked it.
Beautiful, I want to make a kitchen counter and an island out of white birch and this is the way I want to go after seeing the awesome job you have dine! Cheers!!!
Thanks David, that will look really cool, light color wood is always nice.

I've never heard of this
Absolutely beautiful!!! Love the bow ties!! Awesome way to add functional visual appeal.
Thank you Christopher
Beautiful. Love the backsplash.
Thanks Kip
Nice looking project; I am curious to see follow-up videos on these slab countertops after 5 or 10 years to see how they've behaved-or not. Guessing there could be unwanted movement, additional cracking, cupping, twisting, or similar effects of humidity/dryness cycles, temperature swings, and daily use.
This video is two years old. So far nothing other than normal seasonal movement which is always anticipated in woodworking. .
Fantastic! Really good explanation and camera work as well. For someone who claims to not be a professional your craftsmanship is top notch in my opinion.
Thanks Bill, glad you enjoyed the video.

Thank you Doug, pocket screws would have been a better choice IMO. Biscuting was a challenge to get it on and connected.
It is a perfect focal point for that side of your cabin. Will look great when you install it.
Thanks Julia!
That is a beautiful countertop! Really nice job on the butterflies.
Thank you very much!
What a beautiful piece of wood!
Thank you very much!
Great video! I am happy for the success of this channel because you are genuinely a decent & humble human being. I enjoy your videos very much.
Thanks David, I appreciate it.

Great job looking fantastic
Beautiful piece of wood. Fascinated with bow ties. Maple table top from the extra. Or use it to set on top of stove when not in use to make more counter top
Thanks, those are both good ideas
50 Acres & a Cabin cool.

Thank you! you are right I never realized that. it dead ends into a wall maybe I can continue it up the wall and make a kite out of wood.
50 Acres & a Cabin that would looks so awesome!
Awesome piece of work there. The backsplash made it even better. Matching cutting boards would be cool from the cutout pieces. Watching your video gave me the courage to do it for my new kitchen island project. Again, great job!
Hey Ken, good luck on your kitchen Island project!
