Then went on to Benjamin Franklin H.S. on 116 st and Plleasant Ave. From H.S. I went into the Service.. I am Puro Barrio 100 %!!
THIS PUERTO RICAN LATIN JAZZ-VOCAL ARTIST, WITH A 60 YEAR CAREER IN THE GENRE, CARLITO WAS RAISED IN SPANISH HARLEM ON 110th STREET & 3RD AVE. IN THE 30s, WHILE TITO PUENTE LIVED ON PARK AVE, HIS AMIGO. TODAY, CHARLES CARLITO SANO NOW LIVES IN WEST SACRAMENTO, CA !
I think its safe to say that treating Harlem as a tourist attraction is detrimental to Harlem natives because its causes gentrification. I was born and raised in Harlem, and its not was it was decades ago. The rapid gentrification has rent skyrocketing, and the once black/hispanic community is now disappearing because no one can afford to live there. Dear tourists and wealthy people looking for a place to visit or live, please stay away. Or respect the people who have lived there for decades, and acknowledge the effects of gentrification.
What is filthy about the neighborhood? The fact that it is populated by black and hispanic people? Thats what I'm getting from your response. However, if thats not what you're implying, I'm curious as to what 'filth' you're referring to.
@Deeski5150 That is wonderful Deeski, East Harlem is such an exciting place to live! Are there any attractions you would recommend travelers check out in this area?
I love Spanish Harlem. I grew up there. My best memories are there down to the food going to church on Sundays. El Museo del Barrio. And just enjoying being around loving people.. .The Bilingual Bicultural Mini School's Yes it is one of top school for district 4 it provides a performance standards-based curriculum that is of exceptionally high quality, challenging and intellectually enriching for all students.
@FEARTHEPORN2012 Thank you for sharing your memories of growing up in Harlem Ricardo! We will be sure to recommend spending 4th of July in Harlem to our viewers, you make it sound like so much fun! :)
I was born in Italian Harlem on a Hun 7 street. You can tell a real Harlem guy by how he says the street he was born on. I don't care if your black, Jewish or Puerto Rican or Italian. We don't say 114 street we say instead on a Hun 14 street
Richie B. Pacino killed it in carlitos way! "HUN" was evident.. Italian Harlem is a thing of the past... sad.. but many people don't even know about it.. they have to experience the Saint giglio feast. the history is amazing!
@samuel007lee Thank you for your comment Samuel! We would be happy to help you find a place to stay if you chose to move to East Harlem...just let us know! :)
Entire city is gentrified now, all that made NYC what it was, started to disappear after the rents destabilized, and all the mom and pop biz couldn’t afford to stay. 2,000 a month rent for a studio. Horrible.
@xxHolyxxWolfsbanexx lol yeah i love going around there >w< if i hang out in harlem which is kinda rare now im 17..its always around where the mall is. cuz near lexington and down going to the west side..only gets worse
lmao I live here and I cant recognize the place, EDITING IS EVERYTHING this is not what it looks like at all. It has its nice spots, but not as nice as downtown, which is what everyone wants to see for the most part.
@onesexiigoddess there is a high crime rate downtown, there is also more drug use downtown. I guess you did not hear about the three major drug bust on the upper east side. As I said I think you are exaggerating a lot. you are looking for the negative in east harlem.
@67tr876 I know you are not saying that. I am really trying to get across to the other guy that east harlem is not all crime and drugs. there are more good people than bad people. He or she seems to think that east harlem is the worse place in the world!! There is no where in NYC that is drama free
@onesexiigoddess I was raised in jefferson projects. A girl got sliced and someone got shot and killed, that does not reflect the entire east harlem. Although I have seen violence, it is not to the extreme that you are talking. I recently was in jefferson park, no violence nor fights. I was also told that jefferson day was really good. Stop focusing on the negative so much and open your eyes to the positive.
@mwazi1 Hold on now I lived on the upper east side for 15 years and my grandad still lives there now what you just side is bull ! You will get no more clener then the upper east side man.
@67tr876 can you honestly say your neighborhood is drug and crime free? an you honestly say that they youth and adults in your neighborhood do not sell and use drugs, commit rape and robbery against their own?
@mwazi1 look shit is going to happen but in the upper east side its not that bad ! small things you know. Dude I live in the upper east side for 15 years you think I dont know my own neighborhood ? And am not saying Harlem is a bad place.
@mwazi1 look dude ive have very VERY bad experiences growing up in this neighbor hood cant be helped i hate it so much. been at gun point for my shit numerous times and almost killed my bro. and were not fuck ups who do drugs or enjoy violence.
@mwazi1 HONESTLY downtown. through out the day as i GO to school downtown for the last 4years and hangout there day and night..i have NEVER seen crime. Harlem has higher rates of crime downtown is way safer. Ive never not once seen a robbery, or someone get shot..i mean fights from the stupid kids who go to school there but not as much as Jackie which is in harlem. so to answer your question I yes ME i feel safe downtown where ive had no bad experiences

Mariah Aleesa you should be happy that gentrification is pushing out the filth in your neighborhood.

@megaso2010 2pac is great but Big L is Harley's finest.
He talks about all the musicians, but the culture has all been taken away. The people moving there now care nothing about them.
Entire city is gentrified now, all that made NYC what it was, started to disappear after the rents destabilized, and all the mom and pop biz couldn’t afford to stay. 2,000 a month rent for a studio. Horrible.

lmao I live here and I cant recognize the place, EDITING IS EVERYTHING this is not what it looks like at all. It has its nice spots, but not as nice as downtown, which is what everyone wants to see for the most part.
G Gonzalez89 ... try and get something in brooklyn like in park slope or some place with a private community, harlem might not be for you
+G Gonzalez89 Lol did you really just suggest moving to east Harlem from a nice neighborhood in Florida? Sleeep
Jltcp to be fair, any place can be made into a nice place
@onesexiigoddess there is a high crime rate downtown, there is also more drug use downtown. I guess you did not hear about the three major drug bust on the upper east side. As I said I think you are exaggerating a lot. you are looking for the negative in east harlem.
What is with guy he has never been here before he doesn't know how to pronounce Rao's? He has never eat their no way he got a table.
@67tr876 I know you are not saying that. I am really trying to get across to the other guy that east harlem is not all crime and drugs. there are more good people than bad people. He or she seems to think that east harlem is the worse place in the world!! There is no where in NYC that is drama free

Harlem is NOT a bad place to be people...don't let the portrayal of Harlem in film deceive you.
But the hood is
Wat about all the crackheads on 125th and mostly all of harlem tell the truth
East Harlem has become yuppie land. It very expensive to live their now. I keep an apartment their over Rao's 3200 a month rent but well worth it.
@mwazi1 HONESTLY downtown. through out the day as i GO to school downtown for the last 4years and hangout there day and night..i have NEVER seen crime.
