Sioux Falls Washington Highschool played this. I played trumpet in there Symphonic band and I believe we did amazing for a highschool band that only rehearses 45 minutes a day.
my cousin use to be in the langham creek band, but she graduated by this time. Eric Whitacre is tough stuff, my symphonic band at Saginaw High School (TX) played October, which was a very difficult whitacre piece. if you like this one, you'll love "October" :]
My band tried playing this but we could never get it right. We could get the general picture, but never all of the details that Whitacre throws in there. It's an amazing piece and was quite a challenge (I'm on 1st clari...)
I'm at West Salem High School in Salem, Oregon. Our marching band's not on RUclips much, I don't think, but our Wind Ensemble took 2nd in the state competition.
Clar..., Not sure about this solo here, but wouldn't be surprised to find that the whole section is playing it. In a group like this, you have to check your personal ego at the door. If you watch other videos of this group (search: Langham creek band), you will see sections rearranging themselves for each piece as the players cover different parts. I believe this group has chair tryouts for each piece. (cont)
You are indeed close. The piece itself is in 4/4, 3/2, 6/4, 3/4, and the wonderful 3:2/4 bars. Such a fantastic combination of time- unless you are playing it of course, haha. I suppose it does depend on which version you are playing. I've been told there is more than one version (one version incorporates a choir of sorts) but the one I am currently playing does not. It is this version heard above instead.
I used to be part of a band in Markham, Ontario that played this song. There are 73 marked time signatures, and about 8 or 9 marked key changes, not including all the random ones that aren't written, so its difficult to say this entire piece is in cut time or a few keys, and it is very hard to count or conduct. Kudos to this band for performing it with such precision and quality.
I played this with the Christopher Newport University Wind Ensemble in Virginia two years ago. Quite difficult, but I love this piece! Besides from some intonation issues and missed entrances (it is difficult :), I am quite impressed that high schoolers pulled this off. Especially the phasing between the flutes and clarinets and the clarity of the horn and trombone sections; very well done. Bravo!
i love this song and this band played it amazingly... butttttttt.....i have been lookin EVERYWHERE for the part of the clarinet solo/soli section...just that part of the music...i really wanna play it..
@Ehud2221 You do not obviously know what music is if you cannot hear the crispness and clarity of this band. They were named Texas 5A Honor Band because of this piece as well as Pines of Rome and various others. There was only one major mistake in this piece I know because I was in it and heard all the reviews from multiple judges and directors. If you listen to the few professional orchestras that dare play this you will understand different odd tempos/rhythums are suppose to occur.
I must say that this is the best high school (non all-state) band that I have ever heard. It is really amazing, it's not at all suprizing that they were the 5a honor band. Great piece too!
Tempo varied ever so slightly in parts (10 beats max), one trumpet mess-up near the end, trumpets needed little darker sounds, LOVED how they elongated the accented notes, accented doesn't mean short, and they did it right. Excellent job.
I believe that the solo being played by the whole section really shows how strong the clarinet section of this group is. It's usually quite difficult for clarinets to match in terms of tone quality and technique and this was so wonderfully done I can find no complaints. This piece is so complex it's amazing how the few glitches this group has are so little and sporadic.
I'm not sure it's the All-Staters that create a difference between bands. It's the band as a whole. If they are able to cooperate with one another and the players are willing to put out their full potential then that's what makes the difference. That year we had 6 all staters as well, but because of balance issues due to lack of cooperation we placed 5th in honor band. So I wouldn't judge bands through all-staters. Langham has great sounds and balance.
Went to LCHS my Freshman year and was in Band. after listening to this, and the rest of the pieces they played, I surely wish that I hadn't had to miss out on this. Scot McAdow is a musical Genious. Its truly a shame
Continued: It all could be because of mallet selection, where they're located behind the band, the place being performed in, etc, but the percussionists really should thrown down on this because it can be so awesome once you hear their part. Nevertheless, great work; I love this piece

Intro speed=INSANE! Wow, that was quite impressive. However, and maybe it's just me since I'm a percussionist, but having played this piece before, I know that it is VERY percussively demanding. There are some tasty percussion parts in there that should be exposed that aren't coming out like they should. It seemed as if they were serving as more of a background instead of exposing themselves like every other section of the ensemble.
This is all-state. But still this is fantastic. You couldn't tell this was highschool. This is one of the toughest pieces ever composed for a band. Mitchell, South Dakota High School 11-12th is trying to do this and I'm in it. I'm a freshman oboist and my goodness i've got work to do. Wish our group luck on this.
Oh my god. I'm auditiong for the Northern California Community College Honor Band and we're supposed to be playing this piece. >.< Can I just URGH?! Texas kids.....they start lessons in the womb.
This is what inspired me to practive everyday now! I can't WAIT until I get into this high school! Aragon Middle School is doing pretty good preparing me for high school :]
Clar..., By allowing all players the opportunity to play first, they develop better as musicians. Groups where someone can park their tail on first chair for the year are anachronisms and are at least a generation behind groups like this one.
Congratulations! That Ranch kid was just showing some competitiveness to you Langham people. I guess it was something to strive for when Ranch played Equus this year..
Having seen this performance in person, I can assure you the recording doesn't do it justice. It's a good recording, but it was a very different experience to see it live. These kids played amazingly well, not just technically, but you could tell they really believed in what they were doing. My jaw didn't leave the floor throughout most of their concert.
This is really quite good. Up-tempo, precise, accurate. Rhythms here challenge us all! Fine musicians, wonderful piece! The galloping energy is exciting, irresistible.
Hehe, I'm joining their band as a freshmen this year. This band puts A LOT of effort in what they do. I'm learning a lot from the older people. I've always been in bands that gets staright 1's. Glad I'm joining another one with straight 1's :)
Wow, props to the clarinet 1's in the solo that sounded like 1 clarinet, and not 3. Piccolo girl, i'm a big piccolo player too, and you played so well in tune
It sounds so good! I've never heard any Whitacre that wasn't for choir, and this is BRILLIANT! I love the oboe solo about 3ish min in - serious kudos, you've got a beautiful vibrato going there. I'm trying to imagine my band playing this. Hahaha... train wreck doesn't even cover it.
Congratulations Cy Ranch Band for making National Wind Band Honors :D Congratulations to Langham Creek for also making a great recording of this! You guys sound like a million bucks :)
Morton Ranch is still relatively new (Within its first 10 years) and we made it to Area Finals. Don't use age as an excuse for lack of performance quality.
i would love to play this it seems sooo hard i played leevel 2 and it was sun peaks it was herd haah but i am a new bassoonist ha and i had a solo tooooo
I'm a Cy-Springs student, I believe that any band program in CFISD can be just as good or better as Langham. I can agree with you that Langham as a very great band program. (Ranch also)
@Ehud2221 I strongly disagree. Are you familiar with this piece? What's wrong with the tempo? It sounds like a very well done interpretation by a young group. You're strange...
lack of cooperation should not happen with allstaters if anything the rest of the section should look towards them for help with things that their lesson teachers and directors dont touch up on. only should allstaters be amazing on their horns but a big factor in a bands success not through their playing but through their help with others
Excellent for high school students. Good Work!
we are playing this full peice in our band just sight read it yesterday!!!
Sioux Falls Washington Highschool played this. I played trumpet in there Symphonic band and I believe we did amazing for a highschool band that only rehearses 45 minutes a day.
thank u texas holds it down in band
great band!

I liked this.
played this as the 1st mvmt of our marching show last year fo sho
I am from Plano West and we also have 6 all state players. I am one of them.
this song is amazing. I played it in 09 as a senior at Orange High School in North Carolina. Tuba all the way!!!
One band, one sound, one heart beat....
Hands off for you guys
Clar..., Not sure about this solo here, but wouldn't be surprised to find that the whole section is playing it. In a group like this, you have to check your personal ego at the door. I've been looking for this song forever! Praise RUclips! And the band nailed it too!
You are indeed close. The piece itself is in 4/4, 3/2, 6/4, 3/4, and the wonderful 3:2/4 bars. Such a fantastic combination of time- unless you are playing it of course, haha. I love Langham Creek so much right now
we're playing this piece in my high school, its pretty cool
take it easy boy, better your self up and you'll be in a band like that in no time.
It was an amazing performance live for sure

wow awesome recording...so FAST!
Our marching band is playing an arangment of Equus this year, and when I searched... I found this! Awesome piece, and the band is amazing, too!

@DTNSU My school ignores that rule during marching season blatantly. haha
Great job! One of my favorite all time band pieces.
my band director played a recording of Equus for us today
I love this song
Went to LCHS my Freshman year and was in Band. after listening to this, and the rest of the pieces they played, I surely wish that I hadn't had to miss out on this. Scot McAdow is a musical Genious. Its truly a shame
I love how Whitacre put the gallop rhythm in there
A high school band sounding this good is unreal.
Bravo! You've worked very hard. Good luck with Gloriosa.

Well if you play calm with avoid tension in your body. Calm is not lifeless

River Boen yes we do
wow. great tone. this is a good peice of music. is the trumpet part very high cause it doesnt seem all that tough range wise.
Go trombones at 7:33!!
I played this on euphonium and the double tounging was rough, so much respect to you guys.
@TXkid124 weird my band is too. Claudia Taylor Johnson
This peice is intense my band is playing it this year. Cypress Falls
Man this song is awesome!
wow... the tempo is so kicked up right at the beginning! very nice!
wow this ensemble is great. How come Texas rocks so much? I want to live there! =)
I could listen to this allll day. :3
impressive.. one of the best version i've heard...
This is what inspired me to practive everyday now! I can't WAIT until I get into this high school! Aragon Middle School is doing pretty good preparing me for high school :]
Absolutely amazing! Boom!!!
I looked closer at the students, and noticed that theyre sitting all the way back in their chairs,
Clar..., By allowing all players the opportunity to play first, they develop better as musicians. Groups where someone can park their tail on first chair for the year are anachronisms and are at least a generation behind groups like this one.
this is one part of my highschool's marching competative show :)
We get to play this for competition next emester....YAYZ!!!
Nice recording, That is how I try to make my videos look, not too much zoom and try to follow the action. Good Job all around!!
@datcatsmeow first its an opinion, and it was better than decent it was pretty freaking good
Congratulations! That Ranch kid was just showing some competitiveness to you Langham people.

I can't believe a high school band like that exist. I thought my band is alrady really good. Are they all All-State Players?
Mr. Whitacre is indeed a talented composer
This is really quite good. Up-tempo, precise, accurate. Rhythms here challenge us all! Fine musicians, wonderful piece! The galloping energy is exciting, irresistible.
Why so fast?

@scp88np Lots of people in Texas, lots of big schools, lots of good bands. My band is actually playing this for UIL this year. Ugh, clarinet part.
Wow, props to the clarinet 1's in the solo that sounded like 1 clarinet, and not 3. Piccolo girl, i'm a big piccolo player too, and you played so well in tune
@shayerahol22 Mine is too. maybe we go to the same school?
It sounds so good! I've never heard any Whitacre that wasn't for choir, and this is BRILLIANT! I love the oboe solo about 3ish min in - serious kudos, you've got a beautiful vibrato going there.

Congratulations Cy Ranch Band for making National Wind Band Honors :D Congratulations to Langham Creek for also making a great recording of this! You guys sound like a million bucks :)
Great! I LOVE the clarinet parts ;)
Wow. You guys are really good. Our band sure couldn't play like that :)
@scp88np Texas is just that great, that's all there is to it. :D
Morton Ranch is still relatively new (Within its first 10 years) and we made it to Area Finals. Don't use age as an excuse for lack of performance quality.
Wow this is awesome! Our band is about to get this piece to play for competition, but it sounds a bit faster than I'm used to hearing it
Oh wait, it's not all state.
i would love to play this it seems sooo hard i played leevel 2 and it was sun peaks it was herd haah but i am a new bassoonist
ha and i had a solo tooooo
This is so COOL! I've never seen anyone perform this. I don't know how you all count that so well! Eric Whitacre is my favorite composer too :D
Where do you hear phasing?
they sound as one. There is no fault
I little fast for my taste, but nice and precise.
I'm a Cy-Springs student, I believe that any band program in CFISD can be just as good or better as Langham. I can agree with you that Langham as a very great band program. (Ranch also)
*semester
good job...but i think its too fast...
link to order dvd does not work
@Bassrokr94 Wooo, calm down!
is this in 5?
it's really hard to count it
This piece has a lot of time signature changes... God it was hard for marching
@Ehud2221 I strongly disagree. Are you familiar with this piece? What's wrong with the tempo? It sounds like a very well done interpretation by a young group. You're strange...
is this middle school full of the army band or something ?
lack of cooperation should not happen with allstaters if anything the rest of the section should look towards them for help with things that their lesson teachers and directors dont touch up on. only should allstaters be amazing on their horns but a big factor in a bands success not through their playing but through their help with others
@xomaryamxo
5 but it's realistically 6. Whitacre's pieces have a tendency to be a level or so harder than written.
MONSTER trombone section!!!!
7:34 - 7:58 = HOLY CRAP!!!
This was played really fast O.o
the band neads to be more alive, its like their eyes r guled to the piece and they need to add more movement to it
what year was this?
Seems a bit frantic. Personally, I would have taken it a bit slower so that it could, for lack of a better word, "bounce." Haha
The director really doesn't like percussion for some reason. The percussion is barely audible in almost every piece they do.
