My father is from ex Yugoslavia, he said when Diego came to belgrade to play with napoli in mid 80s he was worshiped like a god. He said Diego did not belong to Argentina, but he belonged to Humanity, his character and charisma is unmatched, what separated him from others was that he was pure definition of “ Peoples Champion” around whole world
As a Napolitan, my heart is broken. What you have done for us, on and off the pitch, against impossible odds, will never be forgotten. We lost the greatest of all time.
As an Argentine, I must say that you are spot on at describing him, the relationship alongside his teammates, the feelings we here have for him. It brings me tears of brotherly respect and I am thankful to see this. Here we are completely devastated. I am 41 and I cannot tell you how many flowers I would smash in my grandmother’s garden trying to emulate that 2nd goal. I was 6 in 1986. But in Argentina, we say that it was 1990 the REAL World Cup that Maradona showed his lionhearted stature due to the fact that he played with one foot..his able, left foot was swollen like a pumpkin and medics would not be able to infiltrate his ankle and it was Diego himself who took the syringe and stroke it as deep as he could to go out and play for his country. He was so conscious of what it meant to us and watching him again and again show his passion...unmatched...maybe Ali is a good parameter to understand this... again..I could go on forever but I just want to say “Thank you” ...time to lay down our “weapons” and find peace. God Speed from Buenos Aires.

Messi and Ronaldo owe their careers to Maradona. He was so physically abused on the field due to his talents FIFA literally changed the rules of football. Now you can't touch these guys without getting a yellow or red card, so they can express themselves. He expressed himself to the same as their abilities while being attacked like Bruce Lee would and barely getting a free-kick let alone someone being sent off. He NOT Pele changed football.
He had said recently that Mexican fans deserved better from their national team (Tri). That they would put together a string of good victories then they would play Argentina and lose 4 zero. It angered Mex. sports people but he was 100% correct and everyone knew it. Always kept it @100.

Stop pretending muhammed ali was anything close to maradonas impact. Football is the worlds most fav sport. Boxing is a sport that alot of people simply ignore, and inhumane and disgusting. Ali never came close to maradona, as loved in this world. Stop preaching such stuff. Football is by far the most popular sport on earth, and maradona, was its best player. Ali may of been special, to the segment of society that watches boxing, but alot of people never watch that sport, and never will. Also maradona, was literally hated by anglo american media, while mohammed ali, was cherished by that same media. Total difference. Proving that maradona, touched people, in ways that no other sports person has in all history of sport. Maradona was the ultimate captain as well, bringing the best of those around him. Only zidane in football since, has had that captain ability, to raise up his companions to another level. Anglo americans way over hype ali, as boxing is a side show sport really. I hate boxing, and have not seen it since i was a kid, when eubank, nearly killed that watson(was that his name). Disgusting sport. There is no way that ali had the impact on the world that maradona did, simply because boxing is a side show sport. Yep, lots watch it, but alot of people do not. Football by far is the worlds most popular sport. Maradona had all his fame, even with anglo american media hating him.
Ur deluded! Ali changed the landscape not only in boxing but the social and political discourse in the world. He wanted justice for his people. Maradona was great but not even close to Muhammad Ali with impact. The 1960’s he sold his prime for humanity for civil rights and opposed against the establishment and war against war against innocent people. 3 times heavyweight champion of the world. Touched the lives of millions of people, I love maradona but Muhammad Ali was the greatest and he was the greatest because he stood firm in what he believed even if that meant him losing money, sponsorship deals, heavyweight championship and his prime!
No we aren’t gonna do this stop putting them against each other. I love Maradona I love Ali, Ali was facing there real issues against him in his county so was Maradona but you have to recognize Ali was a civil rights hero
@1989 tv look it’s not about favourite or how big football is. It comes down to the individuals impact and what he represent . Maradonna is an icon and a great but can you honestly say outside the circles of football he has a bigger name, people know maradonna because of football nothing else but people know Ali for being the greatest heavyweight champion of all, civil rights activist, opposing the establishment, supporting his people through oppression. List goes on and on.
@Duke Nukem the Jordan clothes brand is successful because of many different reasons like the design team at Nike etc...not necessarily because he's a bigger star
@Duke Nukem I didn't say that, I said the success of the Jordan clothes brand was because of many factors. Muhammad Ali doesn't have a clothes brand but he's certainly more famous and a bigger star than Jordan was in their primes. Jordan doesn't have much of a personality.
Comparing Ali to Maradona is super disrespectful to Ali. Ali was an example in and out of the ring. Maradona was a great footballer, but people are taking it overboard by saying let’s look over all he has done outside the stadium.
@jfrancis 78 lol are you serious? Maradona was a crackhead that beat his girlfriend and got in trouble with the law. Don’t forget he got busted for PEDs. Ali is known for his activism, what has Maradona been known for other than his downright idiocy off the pitch?
You don’t know the sacrifice and influence he made for millions of people. Opposed the war and didn’t serve the country because he believe killing innocent people was wrong and sacrificed his prime and money for what he believed for.
He was bigger than Ali. Thats a bad comparison. Maradona was a worldwide phenomenon. Loved by almost every country and culture in the world. Known even by people not into soccer. His skills are incredible even mind blowing. Some of the things he did with the ball cant be replicated by anyone. He did things no other person could ever do. In my opinion a good comparison will be someone like Bruce Lee and Michale Jackson. Worldwide phenomenons from every language and culture before the advent of the internet and social media.

Imagine if he treated himself and his playing career more seriously and professionally like Ronaldo and Messi, he would have been at the Everest of records and honours.

Love this show. This is a very difficult subject to treat, because Maradona invites to excess, always, but these 2 guys were amazing.
People love people who have weaknesses, we don't want perfect human beings. Life is not perfect and none is perfect. This is the same reason common people appreciated Mike Tyson more than other champions because they feel him closer to them. Maradona made a lot of mistakes in his life and most of them hurt himself than others and he shall be judged by only God. May Rest in Peace the Greatest footballer for me.
Muhammed Ali was not just a sportsman, he was a revolutionary, philanthropist and civil rights activist. He transcended sport and was a voice for an entire race of people who have been oppressed for centuries. I understand Maradona is a legend in his own right but he cannot be compared to Muhammed Ali.
Totally and utterly agree. Any one who says different is really just being ignorant.. and I like maradona. Ali is on his own.. greatest sportsman ever
Muhammed Ali can’t come close to maradona because football is the biggest sports in the world how will Muhammed Ali be more influential than maradona first off boxing got many rules apart from it lotta people can beat Muhammed Ali but nobody got the talent and skill maradona had that’s the difference
I totally agree Muhammad Ali was the greatest. These idiots don’t know the sacrifice he made for Million of people. Opposed the war and did not serve his country because he believed killing innocent people was wrong and sacrificed his prime and money for what he believed in
Revolutionary and philanthropist how?
Ok for civil ractivist.

Jim Brown did more without having to. Maybe he did not have a platform as big as Ali.
Bruce Lee, Mohamed Ali, Nadia Comaneci, Bolt, Maradona.
Diego may not be immortal, but he is Eternal!
Few had the charisma as Maradona...its easy to understand him he was true..never hided ..smile genuine..its not fake to make something..Sachin Tendulkar in cricket ..can be compared to him by his humility..AND NON VIOLENCE..de walked out 37 times even before the decision was out..he is like 'god of cricket'.Muhammed Ali was not known to all countries..maybe due to the broadcasting at the time....Mike Tyson i agree....Above all what about Sunny listons left hand punch..he was a genius in boxing..But Diego , Sachin and Mike stands above all as legends..or above thst like you said..From India with love.
What is cricket?!
Is over with Argentina soccer Administration without Maradona. Maradona was the reason soccer exist
Very interesting and insightful discussion.
rest in piece diego
He had said recently that Mexican fans deserved better from their national team (Tri). That they would put together a string of good victories then they would play Argentina and lose 4 zero. It angered Mex. sports people but he was 100% correct and everyone knew it. Always kept it @100.
For me Diego Maradona, Mohammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Michael Schumacher!! Those 4 reached another level in their sports

Hold on hold on. I love football and I love boxing so can we not call the sport of boxing disgusting.
Tf, Diego is and was bigger than Jordan. He's up there with Ali and Michael Jackson. Put some respect on the man name when you speak of him.
I'm gonna miss him. Truly a legend. Drugs took away our world champion.
HE WAS AN ARTIST IN FOOTBALL, THAT IS THE RIGHT WORD TO DESCRIBE MARADONA. I DON'T THINK WE'RE GONNA SEE A PLAYER LIKE HIM EVER AGAIN.

@jfrancis 78 lol are you serious? Maradona was a crackhead that beat his girlfriend and got in trouble with the law. Don’t forget he got busted for PEDs. Ali is known for his activism, what has Maradona been known for other than his downright idiocy off the pitch?

He was bigger than Ali. Thats a bad comparison. Maradona was a worldwide phenomenon. Loved by almost every country and culture in the world. Known even by people not into soccer. His skills are incredible even mind blowing. Some of the things he did with the ball cant be replicated by anyone. He did things no other person could ever do. In my opinion a good comparison will be someone like Bruce Lee and Michale Jackson. Worldwide phenomenons from every language and culture before the advent of the internet and social media.
Bruce Lee never competed on a level of Maradona to be recognized on the same level. Bruce Lee was mainly an actor & never a competitor.
Put Ali, Jordan, etc all together but it still won't match the level of Maradona.
