My father is from ex Yugoslavia, he said when Diego came to belgrade to play with napoli in mid 80s he was worshiped like a god. He said Diego did not belong to Argentina, but he belonged to Humanity, his character and charisma is unmatched, what separated him from others was that he was pure definition of “ Peoples Champion” around whole world

As an Argentine, I must say that you are spot on at describing him, the relationship alongside his teammates, the feelings we here have for him. It brings me tears of brotherly respect and I am thankful to see this. Here we are completely devastated. I am 41 and I cannot tell you how many flowers I would smash in my grandmother’s garden trying to emulate that 2nd goal. I was 6 in 1986. But in Argentina, we say that it was 1990 the REAL World Cup that Maradona showed his lionhearted stature due to the fact that he played with one foot..his able, left foot was swollen like a pumpkin and medics would not be able to infiltrate his ankle and it was Diego himself who took the syringe and stroke it as deep as he could to go out and play for his country. He was so conscious of what it meant to us and watching him again and again show his passion...unmatched...maybe Ali is a good parameter to understand this... again..I could go on forever but I just want to say “Thank you” ...time to lay down our “weapons” and find peace. God Speed from Buenos Aires.

I honestly don't think 30 million people shouted Ali's name at the same time. He may have been the greatest at his thing and I think everyone would know how to recognize him if they see him in a photo, like Maradona, but you cannot compare the number of followers a fighter can have with that of a footballer. Both are famous all over the world, but only fans of their own sports really know what they did and why they are legends.

Maradona and Michael Jackson were my 2 biggest idols as a child.
They both were child prodigies, they both came from poverty, they both become the inspiration for specific group of people, they both transcended their activities, they both changed their crafts forever, they both were anti establishment, they both got a modern prophet like cult following, they both got HUGE targets on their backs because of their political power, they both were WAAYYY TOO YOUNG to deal with such pressure and they both succumbed to drugs.
In other words, Diego was one of those rare humans that become real prophets. Nearly at birth these people are blessed with unimaginable talent and have to carry over their shoulders the hopes and desires of their suffering people. They become beacons of light for others. In this sense, they aren't human. They take the role of the divine on earth.

Compared to Ali ; Maradona came into the world screen much earlier. That is Maradona was just 16 when he burst upon the world screen, and within a couple of years, just in his teens he lead his country to be World Cup Champions. It was exactly at that time he gained the popularity and fame completely due to his extraordinary skills that matched no one else of his time except for Pele. He had that aura and persona around him which was just exceptional. This is the reason that he was not able to handle the fame and money and success in his early years, which made him go astray with drugs and loss of temperament. He has admirers cut across all countries and nationalities. May his Soul rest in peace.

Messi and Ronaldo owe their careers to Maradona. He was so physically abused on the field due to his talents FIFA literally changed the rules of football. Now you can't touch these guys without getting a yellow or red card, so they can express themselves. He expressed himself to the same as their abilities while being attacked like Bruce Lee would and barely getting a free-kick let alone someone being sent off. He NOT Pele changed football.

Stop pretending muhammed ali was anything close to maradonas impact.
Football is the worlds most fav sport.
Boxing is a sport that alot of people simply ignore, and inhumane and disgusting.
Ali never came close to maradona, as loved in this world. Stop preaching such stuff.
Football is by far the most popular sport on earth, and maradona, was its best player.
Ali may of been special, to the segment of society that watches boxing, but alot of people never watch that sport, and never will.
Also maradona, was literally hated by anglo american media, while mohammed ali, was cherished by that same media. Total difference.
Proving that maradona, touched people, in ways that no other sports person has in all history of sport.
Maradona was the ultimate captain as well, bringing the best of those around him. Only zidane in football since, has had that captain ability, to raise up his companions to another level.
Anglo americans way over hype ali, as boxing is a side show sport really. I hate boxing, and have not seen it since i was a kid, when eubank, nearly killed that watson(was that his name). Disgusting sport.
There is no way that ali had the impact on the world that maradona did, simply because boxing is a side show sport. Yep, lots watch it, but alot of people do not.
Football by far is the worlds most popular sport.
Maradona had all his fame, even with anglo american media hating him.
