Ah yes, when wanting to give African Americans equal rights was considered "radical."
Yeah, now it's still called radical, but they say it real quiet like. It's not "giving black people equal rights", it's "racism against white people by giving black people EXTRA RIGHTS". It's just like the old saying, once you've been on top for a long time, equality feels like oppression.

You didn't give a full picture of the Grant Administration. All you mentioned were the scandals. You failed even a brief reference to his support of civil rights, and his sending troops to the South to quell racial unrest, and his putting down of the First Era KKK, which didn't resurface in any meaningful way until the Woodrow Wilson administration. The Civil Rights Act of 1871 was passed by Congress specifically at Grant's request.
