Navarro is a great figure in surfing. Also, some perspective from a local who moved there 20 years ago can’t hurt: “Yea Patagonia turned Lobos from an isolated gem with little crowds into nightmare of tourist traffic and now paid parking. Maybe it was inevitable with time but I saw it accelerated with no end in sight and the international fundraiser created by their full page ads in surf mags everywhere also contributed to a luxury hotel restaurant with helipad in what used to be a real soul surf spot now is forever lost. In the end it was an aesthetic change from what would have been slower and probably more tasteless ugly development into a slick American style elite controlled destination.”

Everyone has their struggles in life...Some rise above it and some get consumed by it. Ramon didn’t just catch one epic wave, he caught many in and out of the water and that’s a true champion....Big wave surfing still has that simple and elegant allure to it and I hope it stays that way.

i lived on the north shore from 1989 till 95...this gave me chickenskin...an incredible biography..
ive learned so much by just being there...in the ocean...winter summer small ...perfect..then huge out of nowhere...tremendous respect here..i hope one day i can travel to chile and peru to experience the culture and to see some uncrowded places..
i havent surfed where i need a wetsuit in over ten years though..so maybe im due..
