Well to be fair, death was actually acknowledged in the 1995 Dragon Ball dub and even the first few Z episodes. My guess as to why the whole “next dimension” came up around Episode 5 was that characters in Z...actually died unambiguously and they had to work around it to the best of their ability (not very well).
