    Great tips. I am a list person, so your suggestion to note how you pre-washed the fabric is a good one.

    I know I should but I've never prewashed fabric in the 40+ years I've been sewing. ( haven't had an issue so far!) About to make a linen dress so will definitely give it a go. Thank you...

      You're lucky to not have had any problems! I've definitely had problems with fabric shrinking after washing. Happy sewing!

    Hi Linda... I just washed your video but then I went to your vlog to find out more about prewashing as you stated there would be more in depth discussion on different fabrics. I didn't find anything more than what you just said in your video. Anyhow, your video was helpful. Thanks...

    When pre-washing fabric in the machine do you use laundry detergent or just wash in plain water?

    • @SewDIY
      @SewDIY  4 года назад +8

      Hi Donna, I use detergent. It should help remove any chemicals or stiffeners that were applied during production. I also tend to do a full load of laundry so, I'll wash the fabric with other things. From experience though, I've learned to test how much the fabric will bleed and make sure to wash like colors together.

    Hi! Quick question, would you recommend pinking to finish the raw edges prior to prewashing?

    • @SewDIY
      @SewDIY  4 года назад +2

      Hi Vee, I know I answered this in the live video but just in case someone else is wondering. Yes, I recommend finishing the edges of the fabric before pre-washing in a washing machine. This will prevent the fabric unraveling and creating a mess of threads. If you're hand washing it won't get very frayed so it's not really needed. I usually zig zag the edge with a long stitch. You can also use pinking shears or your serger.

    Do you pre wash cotton webbing (used for a washable totes/bag handle)?

    • @SewDIY
      @SewDIY  2 года назад

      I've used webbing a few times and never prewashed it. If you plan on washing your bags it might be a good idea though.

    After prewashing your fabric, how can you tell the right side from the wrong side if they look identical even before washing?

    • @SewDIY
      @SewDIY  3 года назад

      It's unlikely that prewashing will change the appearance of the right or wrong side of the fabric. Sometimes, fabric just looks the same on both sides. In that case, just pick one side to be the right side. Then while cutting out your fabric, mark the wrong side of the fabric using chalk, washi tape or another removable marking.

    When you say wash are you recommending detergent or just water?

    • @SewDIY
      @SewDIY  3 года назад

      Hi Monisa, I use detergent too. It should help wash away any excess dye or other fabric treatments.

    How do you easily pull out zigzag stitch? I had to cut every second stitch or pull it one by one to actually make it happen.

    • @SewDIY
      @SewDIY  5 лет назад +2

      Wow that sounds like a stubborn zig zag stitch. When doing the zig zag for prewashing, I use a very long stitch length (4-5mm). I can usually just pull one of the threads and it will pull out a bunch, then I trim it and repeat until it's all done. If the zig zag stitches are very close together (like for a buttonhole), then you pretty much have to cut every stitch to remove it.

    Please, how do I prewash a faux leather fabric?

    • @SewDIY
      @SewDIY  3 года назад

      I'm sorry I haven't worked with faux leather before. Maybe the fabric manufacturer has advice? In general, you'll want to prewash the same way that you intend to wash the garment later. If you don't plan on washing later, then you don't need to prewash.

    Hi, should I pre wash satın in the machine?

    • @SewDIY
      @SewDIY  2 года назад

      My gut says to hand wash satin because it's a delicate fabric. I have not used it much though so I don't have personal experience. You can search the internet for "how to wash satin" for advice. You can also do a test wash with a swatch to see how it reacts.

      @@SewDIY I got that from someone's blog, tried it and it worked, at least it did with cotton, maybe cut 1/2 inch down on the side and cut at a diagonal toward the top.

      With Pinking shears or anything? I just prewash a entire load of new fabrics and OMG the fraying was horrible. I ran directly to RUclips to search videos to help. Thank in advance if you happen to reply. I can't believe how much fabric I ended up losing. The fabrics ended up knotting together.

    Hello are there any fabrics that are a washing no no? I don't want to make the mistake of washing a fabric I can not

    • @SewDIY
      @SewDIY  2 года назад

      You want to be careful with silk, wool and other animal fiber. Sometimes those fabrics can be dry clean only. I recommend testing a swatch of the fabric before washing the entire length. With wool and other animal fibers, you need to be careful that you don't use too much heat or agitation because it can cause felting.
