Welcome to our RUclips channel, solely dedicated to words.
Say Your Word is a digital platform by the acclaimed novelist, storyteller and women’s rights activist Elif Shafak.
A platform for words and anyone who cares about them.
Language is the key to understanding and unlocking our world.
It is also the key to the human heart.
Words are often said to have power.
What is not said that often is that they can hurt and even spread hatred and hostility, just like they can heal and bring about love, empathy and wisdom.
They can divide, distance and "dehumanise", just like they can connect and “rehumanise" those who have been dehumanised.
East and West, North and South, regardless of race, sex, gender, colour, religion, ethnicity, nationality or any other category, we are all made of stories.
Stories bring us together, untold stories keep us apart.
    Today's word is MANSPLAINING.

As a mechanical engineer I have frequently been subjected to mansplaining, but one time I took my car to a garage and told them what the fault was that I needed fixing. They assured me that was not the case and did two other completely unrelated fixes before they eventually did what I had told them and cured the problem. The best bit was that they admitted their mistake and said they couldn’t charge me for the unnecessary repairs as I had told them what was wrong in the first place, this happened over 20 years ago

I have been facing severe mansplaining since my University entrance period has approached. I want to study Architecture. But my elder brother (who thinks of himself as the most intelligent in our family, lol ! He's a man full of unhealthy male ego. ) has been trying to demotivate me saying it's a very tough career, and females can't handle so much pressure. I can't shine on this path and endless useless logic. But I don't pay any heed to him and studying harder for my Architecture school entrance exam. I'm very lucky that my father isn't like him. My father is also an engineer and always encouraged me to study in Engineering sectors. Hope one day I'll be able to make my dream true. wish me good luck.

This hit so close to home... I was told that taking up a career in STEM is not normal. It's not something women do. Women should only have careers as teachers because it gives you more time to take care of your kids at home. We have no identity apart from being mother's, wives and daughters....I felt shattered but eventually realized I have a point to prove. So here I am pursuing my PhD in STEM. I have more degrees than any of the other males at home. But I still am constantly mansplained on how I should speak, dress, act..etc...it doesn't end.

Let's not forget that a woman raises men who interrupt women, set limits on women, decide on behalf of women, decide what women will wear or what time they will come home. In order to change this awful situation, we must also try to change the attitudes of some women (mothers).

Elif, I have Rebecca's book, unread! by my bed, in a huge tote bag, near your book on postpartum depression- listening to you I think I know why my "poor" spouse gets Interrupted, unintentionally no rudeness meant- my late father was very abusive, physically, emotionally, sexually- my mother, not me, and verbally. I am an "only child" and a girl NOT a boy! so I was constantly berated and to be heard at all, I had to interrupt and often yell, defensively! My partner claims this is abuse! I love and cherish him and am not aware this is hurtful- I in turn get annoyed when he yet again, explains, WHY this is hurtful etc! Thank you. Whenever I chance upon you I listen and always learn something and I say a few words to this marvel of a Universe, why can't every teacher be an Elif Shafak? Even the timbre of your voice is lovely, you're physical beauty is slightly mysterious- I wanted to be a writer but you understand how inept is my "brain and hand" no talent- I am trying not just to comment on how very beautiful you are, even your hair, the thickness and the unique 2 in 1, way you wear it and your incredible composure, sort of jilted by those incredible thumb rings- I have been in despair since turning another year older- I look the same as I did 12 days ago but feel my clothes are "too young" I might stand out, ie express myself or be mistaken for a narcissist! Thank you for inadvertently giving me an insight and on "therapy day" too. It's corny, but "hugs" ....
Namaste ( buying your latest book today, can't wait!)

I think what women REALLY mean when they use this term "mansplaining" is to dismiss men when they use logical consistency to call women out on their unfair behavior.
Because when someone tries to use bad arguements to get their way, the issue is not "man" in mansplaining, the issue is the bad arguements use to get their way.
It's a really sexist term and, as a man, I don't apprecaite it - as neither would you if someone dismissed you with 'woman-splaining' or some such nonsense

Native societies in my country were very matriarchal, and our families are still matriarchal... The woman usually has the last word in the house and also before the courts. Matriarchal culture still exists in parts of the world. Judeo-Christian culture and Islam are of course very patriarchal and have imposed their views pretty much everywhere by way of conquest and mnemonic genocide performed everywhere they went towards the people who were there before them as a way to establish their supremacy. 🧙‍♂

It is a misreading of Christian scriptures to abuse women. Men who use scripture as an excuse to abuse women neither understand scripture nor know God. Spoken as a woman who has studied scripture for seven years.

I actually read many versions of the Bible. Thanks for giving me proof that the idea of sisterhood in a matriarchy is a lie but I have already experienced this in all female corporate environments. Just lots of aggressive women wishing they had penises.

If you look at the essence of what mansplaning is, it is a deeply rooted belief of being entitled and superior. It requires a hierarchical system where this belief of being entitled can be exemplified to define who is at the top and who is at the bottom of this hierarchy. Very often this behaviour is explicitly or implicitly approved by the peers in a group. In other words it can be considered as a variation of bullying. I'd like to make the point that this behaviour also can be exemplified against men if those men are at the actual or perceived inferior end of the said hierarchy. It happened to me many times despite the fact that I am male and not female. I suppose what this behaviour does psychologically to an individual is independent of the sex of that said individual.

Amusing little titbit: the Turkish word for mansplaining is açüklemek. çük is the Turkish derogatory term for little wiener, little pr*ck. The ending -emek is just the Turkish infinitive. The Turkish word for "to explain" is açiklamak and is the base for this term. açüklemek is thus "little-wiener-splainining".
    My little contribution mansplaining mansplaining...
