Same! Just got home from a first date. It’s 10:30pm. Seeing this upload is so exciting! I’m going to settle in and watch this video. My night just got better
I 💯agree with this comment. I refuse to watch any current Ryan Murphy projects. I just can’t. I rather watch Fish Jelly’s review of this series than the actual series itself.
When it comes to Ryan Murphy - he has a habit of starting off strong then going completely off of the rails. He does this EVERY season of American Horror Story. He has good ideas but it’s like he can’t help but to sensationalize any story he’s trying to tell.
I also didn’t like how the sexual abuse was handled regarding Eric. I think this idea that sexual abuse leads to homosexuality is absurd and this series did nothing for gay people who are trying to let this horrendous stereotype die.
I had a gay friend who said he wouldn't have been gay if he wasn't sexually abused by a boy when he was a kid. Not saying he's right but that's what he said.
I loved this series! I am 42 years old so i vaguely remember the Menendez brothers trial, but from what I did recall, the media portrayed them to be 2 spoiled rich kids who killed their parents in cold blood and then cried child molestation to try to get off. This series completely changed my view of that portrayal. It showed how horrific their lives and parents actually were. I literally cried my eyes out for these boys and what they went through. I am actually surprised that Erick doesn't like this show because for me it made my view of them do a complete 180 and I have so much more sympathy now for them both than I ever did previously. I hope this show brings light to the injustices that these men were put through and they are somehow freed. I think they both deserve that.
FANTASTIC REVIEW GUYS! 👏💯❤️ Thanks soooo much (cause ain't no way I was about to sit through no NINE episodes of Ryan Murphy camp...but I find the true crime fascinating). So thank God for your detailed, fact filled and highly entertaining breakdown /recap. LOVE YOU !!!
Terrific review! I lol'd when Kitty ripped off Lyle's hair. Chloe's Kitty performance was my favourite. You could really feel her disdain for those 2 sh!ts.
I started watching this but thought it was too goofy....the real story is incredibly sad. Ok I finished it. I thought Javier and Chole did a great job, I hated their characters. I wish the series hadn't tried to be so funny and instead focused on the fact that people did not think men could be rape victims or victims of child SA and how that partially led to the verdict. Very sad. This series was a bit too light hearted
When Chloe Sevigny ripped off that hair implant, I immediately stopped watching. Y’all were right on target, when y’all stated what was this supposed to make us feel. Ryan Murphy needs to get the T Perry treatment for making this series. We didn’t ask nor did we need this. Again only watched the first episode, but the review that y’all are giving sounds better than what may have actually been written.
I actually felt bad for Lyle when seeing that scene. And even if this series portrayed the boys accurately (which I’m not saying it did cause clearly not) I would still feel bad for them and take their side.
One more thing, on the topic of Dunne, watch Murphy now cover Dominique's death, which is horrific. Her real bruises were shown on an episode of Hill Street Blues. It's very hard to see.
I really liked it, I finished it this morning. Switching between watching and googling the movie to see real pic and finding more info about it. I was shocked about the hair and laughed at the dad mocking the boys. The actors were so likable more likable than the real brothers, who looked sinister. They look just like their mother. I’m sure they wouldn’t have gotten away with it, but they were so careless. Usually when people commit crimes they always tell someone, but for Lyle to be so dumb, to write people and tell about it I knew it was over for them. Also I liked how much the brothers loved and protected each other. I read more about the father and things he was accused of, which was awful. I’m just curious about how much was factual about the abuse of the boys, because the lady at the end who had a heart attack made some valid points.
I'm 41, so i watched this trial on CourtTV back in the day. Ryan handled this disgustingly. There's the allegations by the Menudo members coming forward. Erik put out a statement saying, "You fucked us Ryan." A new trial may be coming and this may effect that. Plus, the testimony of the cousins is pretty legitimate. In the second trial, they weren't allowed to speak about the abuse. I've personally always believed them, not excusing their actions, but if their stories are truth, then these men suffered tremendously. I don't think they'd reoffend if let out. Lyle was also not this combative. Thanks for reviewing this. It's such a complicated case.
They couldn’t talk about the abuse in the second trial because of Lyle shooting his mouth off to that random fan about his delivery on the stand. I don’t understand why people are so upset about a show that never pretended to be a documentary. I Agree with the unpopular take that we needed a perspective from the parents. Kitty and her motivations gets lost in all of it.
@TheBerkeleyBeauty my dad is a retired detective, so I've been interested in true crime from a young age. Plus with all the made for tv films like Gacy w Brian Dennehy, Jonestown, the Atlanta murders, they were big and played on major networks in the 80's.
I hate that this version doesn’t cover the rape/molestation by both of their parents since they were young children…but the law & order version did a good job telling a more dynamic truthful story
Maybe Kitty explaining her abuse?, and them not necessarily filming it. We didn't actually get to hear much of her character like Jose' background when he called his mother to ask about when she abused him@@BluePrada
I wanted the series to delve into the backstories of kitty and Jose and maybe we could have seen flashbacks to when Lyle and Erik were kids. Maybe if we saw what they went through we would have a better idea of what Ryan was trying to say. Plus this series could have talked about Jose abusing the menudo member and the brothers. I think I’ll watch the 1994 Menendez a killing in Beverly Hills movie instead
I’m actually so upset. When I saw this dropped a few days ago I was like “OH let me go watch this entire series THEN I’ll watch Nick and Joseph’s review so I know what they’re talking about”… well here I am now, very underwhelmed by what I just watched and realizing I could’ve just watched an hour of your review instead of 9 hours of Ryan Murphy’s weird depiction of this very fucked up story. Either way thank you both for this 🙏🏽
The reason why the Dominick Dunne was such a large role is because the prosecution during the second trial claimed they had recordings from Norma that Lyle was bragging about his “permorfance” during the first trial. It made it sound like Lyle was sociopathic as the public was at the time being convinced by the media (I.e. Dunne). Norma later recanted the statement and claimed Dunne paid her off. Dominick Dunne himself later admitted that he paid Norma for this testimony. It just so happened this certainly swayed public opinion. While I agree that Ryan Murphy could be more intentional with his portrayal, I also never would have even known that had it not been for learning about Dominick through the series and doing my own investigation on why he would even be given such a big role.
Ryan Murphy should have quit on a high note, while he was making watchable limited series. In other words, several years ago. Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should! Thanks for the review, Joseph and Nick; they are often the high note of productions like this.
I think main thing to remember is this is a dramatisation of an awful real life event. I thought it was an interesting watch. The story is nuanced, complex & ultimately a tragedy so i think the directors, producers, cast etc did an amazing job of telling varying perspectives and bringing this tragedy to a new audience in a creative & compelling way.
I don’t know about you, but if you was young, and you watched this trial. In real time. it gave us the backstory because we saw the court version. It’s very triggering, but I like how the director focused on all the angles of the story. It gave me goosebumps and at the end I was emotionally disturbed because I cried like a baby. What a truly sad story this is not something that was just made up. This is actual life and facts. Excellent job for me. This story was deep with the deep. & traumatizing it wasn’t traumatizing back then. Watching it now. Holy shit.
The Nathan Lane scenes bugged me because it seemed like they were making him Truman Capote… I thought exactly the same. It seemed to be halting and stretching the story unnecessarily
@@jool4867 Me too! This is the first role I’ve seen him in where I didn’t love every moment he was on screen. This was really like “Why? Him again? Why?”
If they took away the scenes where they insinuated Erik and Lyle had a sexual relationship, and all the scenes that over sexualized them this series would be great. The acting is great, Javier bardem was frightening and horrific…the story moved along pretty well and it made me want to research the facts of the case. I felt extreme sympathy for the boys because of this show, the real monsters were the parents. Intentional or not…At the end of the day, the show served a purpose.
The brothers were 21 and 18 at the time of the murders. Had they been minors I would consider their self defense. But as adults they could have just left. Why didn't they just disown their parents? Well daddy had a lot of money and they wouldn't be seeing another dime of that if they just left. They definitely committed premeditated first degree murder.
Ok, hear me out. I believe Nathan Lane and his guest are meant to represent the media circus and public opinion. It wasn’t perfect and more could have done with it but I liked the concept or maybe I love Nathan Lane too much that I will defend any role he’s in. 😅 Love this review!! ❤
I'm so glad I found you pair!! This weekend, I watched the show on Netflix and was so disappointed. There was too much emphasis on their bodies, Nathan Lane's gossipy parties and the ridiculousness of Judolan and Dr O. Then The Hurt Man episode was so chilling and triggering, it had no place in this depiction. So I paid for the Law & Order True Crimes version from 2017, just for a clearer idea of what had happened and why. First of all, the L&O version had a much better soundtrack! But secondly, and more importantly, they didn't waste time trying to oversexualize two alleged survivors of child sex abuse. Watching The Hurt Man episode and the L&O mini-series, I believe there was some evidence and witness accounts of sexual abuse. I therefore can't help but feel Ryan Murphy's version was exploitative xxx
Ryan Murphy did this as well with the Dahmer series when he didn't even bother to talk to any of the victims' family members and basically made that series without thinking about how it would affect them having that trauma being brought back into the spotlight. He's very shady.
I’ve already heard enough of this extremely disturbing & tragic story. I can’t watch anymore of this because it’s just too sickeningly violent! I’m well aware of what the other family members have said during their interviews lately. They really realize that the brothers were treated very brutally & Jose was a very nasty person/man all around. Just in general. 😑 there’s just so much that’s come to light through E.T. or whoever comes fourth & explains this or that. But…I had specifically stated awhile back that their outcome really should truly depend upon the divine will of the Lord Jesus Christ to determine whether they’re truly ready to take part in the community. I will not be judging them; it’s not my place. I will just wish them the best outcome.
I thought Dahmer was pretty well done with directors like Gregg Araki coming and doing interesting things visually, and the storytelling being pretty compelling (though I read it was really inaccurate), but this seems more like it's bordering fan fiction. I wish Ryan would go back and produce another series like Pose which I really loved, or another grounded AHS season, instead of trying to conjure up a 10 episode series about killers who's lives aren't known...
I believe the portrayal psychological state was accurate. They were highly traumatized and the behavior they exhibited was consistent with this intense and brutal sexual abuse. The transmission of trans-generational trauma was also depicted with accuracy.
I think that episode where the mom had the seizure was supposed to be real. If you are withdrawing from alcohol or benzodiazepines, seizures are not uncommon. Therefore once you start drinking again, like she did, the seizure stops.
Joseph I loved Mama's Family too! I used to watch it on Nick at Night all the time! If I could find it I would happily watch again. Vicki Lawrence is so underrated!!!! Honestly it's always been a guilty pleasure, you're the first person I've heard say they loved it!!!
Love you both but i was disappointed that at least Nick didn’t have more to say about episode 5 the one shot no edit remarkable performance by cooper. Nick is such a film buff i would have thought he would have more to say on this. Either way thank you for reviewing!
Never watched the Monica Lewinsky or the Dahmer ones. As a 90s kid who watches these as an adult to know more about these crimes that happened when I was little would you guys recommend?
Ryan Murphy only focuses on one thing....homosexuality, in dang near all of his docuseries lol plus Erik should have been talking to the lady in the lake for his confession
I don't think this series was very affective at attchieving its goal of making the 'audience the jury' as a wise soul said. Unfortunately the decision to paint the crime through the lense of what the defense and prosecution were using to sway the jury created a muddled depiction that will infuriate people interested in solid facts.
I was already skeptical of this show since i have mixed feelings when it comes to Ryan Murphy's work. I appreciate you giving us a detailed review as i'm very unlikely to watch this series. Hope you're both doing well. ❤
This was so over the top! I sort of think they were copying The Staircase. Also, as someone who grew up during the 80s, I don’t think you all understand how nuts it was 😂😂😂
I really didn't like the way the brothers were sexualized in the advertising for this show. Sounds like it's a good thing I didn't watch it. Loved hearing you two talk about it though!
I love the idea of the first two episodes framing the parents as monsters, then the two episodes following the first trial, framing the boys as monsters. Hell it is called Monsters after all. We could/should have more fleshed out relationships with the parents.
I dont even wanna watch this shit... I watched the documentary, and its fkd up how they did those boys... people said that the show basically makes it seem like everything the boys went through wasnt THAT BAD or that the'yre str8 up lying... And why would Lyle Lying about crying be such a big surprise?!!! I wouldnt be fuckin sad if i killed my rapo parents either 🤷🏾♂️
If you were guilty of first degree murder you'd probably lie too to try and get out of it. It's actually rare for someone to tell the truth about something horrible they did. So there is good reason to believe they could be lying. You can't murder someone and then claim 'oh they molested me as a kid" and expect to get away with it. They were adults when they murdered their parents. They could have just left.
Thanks guys! I might skip this series OR I might watch it just to know what Fish Jelly is talking about :) Btw, The Penguin (same director as Mare of Easttown - Craig Zobel) and Agatha All Along both have a strong start, especially the former! Would love to see your reviews if you have time!
I can't disagree with much of anything you guys said at all....I just kind of expect these sorts of Ryan Murphy projects to be mostly tawdry, exploitative messes the moment I click on them.
Jose Menendez was not worth that much money, more likely $10 million. In CA, you can argue imperfect self defense. The second trial was terrible since the jury was not allowed to consider manslaugher charges.
*Blame it on the Rain* and scandal, perhaps drained the emotional bits from the perpetrators in their own minds? Outrageously, a time waster of a pick...horror crime. I feel your summary😉and suggestions, makes its point, it's soulless in delivery
I’d rather watch Fish Jelly’s review of a Ryan Murphy project over the actual Ryan Murphy project. 😅

Ryan Murphy should quit while he was ahead. In other words, several years ago. Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should.
It seems like a lot of these new doc series are trying to bank off late 80’s and early 90’s nostalgia rather than telling a good story.
I did not expect this show to have a wig snatch

I wish Gregg wrote and directed this entire series. It would have been more truthful.
Thanks to this bloody series I have had this awfull Millie Vanillie song in my head for days. Make it stop! 😂😂😂
Which one ?
Blame it on the rain
You really need to watch American horror story and give us a review
Only the first 2 seasons are good.
When I noticed this review was almost an hour long I knew this series was going to be bad. Because Nick and Joseph that is how you guys roll. LOL!
Joseph I loved Mama's Family too! I used to watch it on Nick at Night all the time! If I could find it I would happily watch again. Vicki Lawrence is so underrated!!!! Honestly it's always been a guilty pleasure, you're the first person I've heard say they loved it!!!
Free Lyle and Erik... Its over with. They've been in jail longer than they were ever free.
I loved this series.
I like how they presented both sides and multiple points of views..
This was a brilliant brilliant show loved it
Love you both but i was disappointed that at least Nick didn’t have more to say about episode 5 the one shot no edit remarkable performance by cooper.
Almost, not all! Nip/tuck was his best ever and no homosexuality in the main characters
@@Jackielikeskillersmiles Bruh. Nip/Tuck was pure, unadulterated cringe back when it aired, and it has aged horribly.
There are many times I don't even care about the review I just like to hear Joseph's voice
Vicki Lawrence, Thelma Harper of Mama’s Family playing a juror!
White Tyler Perry strikes again 🤣
And he’s amazing. Nip/Tuck was his best
That is a perfect description
3:50 Nick is clearly over the shenanigans lol
I don't think this series was very affective at attchieving its goal of making the 'audience the jury' as a wise soul said. Unfortunately the decision to paint the crime through the lense of what the defense and prosecution were using to sway the jury created a muddled depiction that will infuriate people interested in solid facts.
Am I tripping or do I hear a cat meowing in the background?😂😂
You're not tripping.
I liked it a lot
Yes! Poetic justice hoodie!!!
I was already skeptical of this show since i have mixed feelings when it comes to Ryan Murphy's work. I appreciate you giving us a detailed review as i'm very unlikely to watch this series. Hope you're both doing well. ❤
My bf and I have really enjoyed it. We are only on episode 7 though. I/we feel like it is appropriately campy.
Here we go 😅
Am I trippin or is there a cat just moaning in the backdrop the whole time of this review?😂
lol I found myself saying this should’ve been 6 episodes too
This was so over the top!
Solution: 7 episodes instead of 9
Otherwise great show, as usual with Ryan. Stellar acting. Beautiful boys.
Bubba from Mama’s Family…I get it
Everyone seemed to like the music except you two
Chloe Sevigny is miscast… I think the real Kitty gives more Lawng Island housewife harpie type whereas Chloe gives typical bored california housewife.
Ryan needs to take a break - literally all of his series (?) are getting worse ... I was a big fan of AHS and others but ... not so much anymore
Chloe is the best! ❤❤❤
I loved it.
Fact of fiction we were not there. It was interesting
Off the back I avoided this series. However it’s the music that makes me click on trailers.
Guys, sounds convoluted and wth segments. Pass. Love you guys❤❤❤
I can't disagree with much of anything you guys said at all....I just kind of expect these sorts of Ryan Murphy projects to be mostly tawdry, exploitative messes the moment I click on them.
I have to disagree! I think this was great story telling. I love the acting, the casting, the direction. I really don't understand the bad review!!
Jose Menendez was not worth that much money, more likely $10 million. In CA, you can argue imperfect self defense. The second trial was terrible since the jury was not allowed to consider manslaugher charges.
10 million in the 80’s is like 100 million today
*Blame it on the Rain* and scandal, perhaps drained the emotional bits from the perpetrators in their own minds? Outrageously, a time waster of a pick...horror crime. I feel your summary😉and suggestions, makes its point, it's soulless in delivery
