- In 2004, with the rise of new technology and pioneering ideas, Lost, a mysterious new hit show for ABC changed the way we watched television. It altered the landscape in how we, as fans, engaged with our favourite series. This is the story of how Lost changed television fandom forever.

Lost, the show about survivors of a plane crash on a mysterious island, arrived on television in a very traditional sense. But what followed was innovation in the way fans experienced television shows. From the Lost podcasts to the Lost video game (Lost: Via Domus) and Lost ARGs (alternative reality game), Lost pioneered several metaverse strategies that are now commonplace with the latest Netflix and Disney Plus TV shows.

I’ll never pass up a video that highlights the greatness that was LOST. Say what you will about how to ended, or began to end, but it’s probably my favorite show to ever get so absorbed into and the fact that everyone at the time, was watching it too. So many gasps and shocking endings. Love LOST!

LOST will always be one of my favorite shows, the plot alone is amazing. It goes into such deep depth with its detail and always had something newer and bigger happen. The acting was top tier as well, they casted the perfect people for the job.
Perfect show. Perfect ending. Okay, it has SOME issues. Anyway, Event TV unlike anything we'll ever see again.

You had to watch too many episodes to get it. If you missed more than one by the end you were...lost. No pun intended :)

@@STEELGMBL Yes but Lost was an extreme case of this. Everybody wonders with the smoke monster is but there is an episode in season 6 that explains it but if you didn't watch that episode you missed it and therefore missed the origins of one of the most notorious mysteries in tv history.

Everyone slated lost at the end but when watching it back it’s one of the most perfect ways to end it
My main problem with it was that major things were teased and never answered. Major plot lines dropped. It was not clean compared to something like Seinfeld/Back to the Future which connects perfectly
@@ricknineg that’s true was some thing that should have been addressed for sure but with way thing are ending these days like game of thrones and stuff lost was pretty well done 🤣

Many memories of watching this with my family growing up. Watched the series on air and never missed an episode from age 9-15. Happy 17th, LOST.

Season 2 of LOST is overrated. Season 5 is one of my favorite seasons. Season 6 has it's issues but none are as bad as season 2. I also found season 4 on the more weaker side (especially the first half).

I'm going to say it. You could revive lost. Sequel or sideways universe. Cmon man we need another lost. Nothing's replaced it.
LOST does every thing so perfectly that when it does do something wrong, it seems like a much larger punch in the face than it actually is.

A decade later, can we really be upset to learn the storytelling was aimless for 6 seasons? True, the producers sold the show as being more than what it was, but - without the show itself - we would've never been able to sufficiently dissect a show. Thanks IGN for the great, moving piece for us Lost fans.

Lost was amazing the ending.. obviously not great but dam what suspense this show had especially with the bunker!!

Absolute game changer. The wait between episodes was agonising.... And the wait between S1 and S2 was killer. Feel like so many shows have tried to recreate this magic and feel way short (manifest). Hopefully something will come along one day.

There was nothing wrong with the ending of Lost. It was actually a perfect ending. People were just disappointed that the incredible journey the show took us through ended. Its never about the destination, its about the journey. 🙂
But how the fact that the journey is the point changes the fact that the ending is badly done?

I've really liked these video essays from IGN, but it feels like there's a bit missing which talks about whether the changing of how we watch television can have negative effects. Otherwise, this was a really interesting topic to cover!

Lost's season 3 finale twist was one of the first big things the internet spoiled for me.
It sad that Lost seems to get "lost" in the conversation of greatest TV shows of all time. Was the ending disappointing? Ofcourse. Have there been better shows since? Definitely. But Lost paved the way for all the shows after it like Breaking Bad and GOT. It was so overrated for so long that it has become underrated.

@@kuhpunkt Well at some point between 2007-2008 and television screenwriters of the American labor unions Writers Guild of America, East, and Writers Guild of America West went on strike. Because of this many TV and Films suffer including Lost, Heroes, and many others. What was solid writing slowly became slowly lazy.
@@johnathanholmes1297 Why would the strike have an effect on the writing? They took a break and then continued working.
@@johnathanholmes1297 LOST was actually the exception the rule with the writers strike, the consequential condensed season episode count helped immensely and it continued to be nominated for best series at the Emmys (the audience drop occurred in early season 3 and it missed an Emmy nom with season 2) and retained steady audience numbers. According to the review aggregates, Season 4 (the season affected by the writers’ strike) is considered as one of the best seasons.
It’s arguably a difference of tastes between those that were more interested in the soap opera content of the series and those that were more interested in the story-driven elements which took over when the series became incredibly serialised in its back half.
Also of note, the producers negotiated the end date in 2007 before the writers’ strike occurred

There have been shows that predate Lost, and what it did, had passionate global communities that formed around them, etc. But since this is another video produced by Millennials, the world didn't exist until early 2000, apparently...
How was a show produced by millennials made in 2004? Were they all 4 years old when they wrote it or something?
Lost started off strong with a great premise, but the story got progressively worse as the material was stretched to fill out seasons and episodes. The last season was just silly and contrived.

In what way?. LOST is one of the most clever shows around. Pulling from pretty much everything, psychology, sociology, physics, philosophy...western and eastern religion. It had it's issues. But it hit more than it missed.
