Great video! I loved the HERO series when I was about 7 years old, in 1985, I used to wish I could have HERO or HERO Jr. And I used to go to the local Heath Kit in Hawaii and bug the guys to run the HERO demo.. They got tired of me after a while.. :) I'm blind, so I used to love hearing the robots talk.. And one of my favorite lines was HERO saying: "please be quiet.. I'm trying to sleep." And he even sang a little bit, I think... Anyway, my question was mostly about the speach engine... I know for HERO, the original ones used Votraks I think it was? Anyway, I was just wondering if this particular model is using its original speach synthesizer..Great stuff..
The people who made these robots 30 years ago are like a lost civilization that does not exist any more. it's sad because the robots you can buy today are like baby's toys compared the the heath kit hero.
Just powered my Hero 2000 that I bought 31 years ago, to see if he was still working. Not a sound. I forgot that I had added a speaker bypass option in such that I could use my computer speakers instead, when ever busy doing Hero's basic programming. I switched it back to the on board speaker, and bingo, "Hello, I am Hero 2000. Please enter the following data....".
That's awesome. Not bad for sitting idle for 30 years. The 2000 was very impressive back in the 80s and in many ways they are still impressive today. Very collectible too.
It just needs a new battery, and perhaps the un-yellowing of the frames plastic sections. Way back then ( 05/20/87 ), it cost me exactly $2,999 Canadian dollars, plus tax.
I am now bringing the appearance of my Hero 2000 back to life. imgur.com/a/sLahvr1 The plastics had turned a heavy yellow color, but as you can see, my plastic de-yellowing is coming along quit good. In the picture you can see the de-yellowed top section compared to the non-de-yellowed sonal section. WOW !

Hero 2000 is fantastic, so far ahead of its time as a teaching aid!!

This thing is a class above the rest of the Hero series. Pure awesome!

I just noticed that the RUBBER BLACK/RED RETAINER BAND is missing.
What shocked me was seeing a used one on sale at ebay for $225. ????
I have one for my 2000, but it's hard to take on and off and I don't want to risk breaking it so usually leave it off.

Love that voice.
This robot is sooooooooo cool. I want it!
That frigger knew LOL before the Internet was invented
is there any program out there that can simulate the synthetic speech this robot makes?
MAME is the closest thing to emulating the Votrax chip. Votrax is the chip that generates the speech.
GAWD how I LOVE THIS.
hawking? you in there? Pretty inpressive for the time :D
This Rocks!
That is soo cool!!!
hawking? you in there?
"By your command."
How much do these go for on ebay?
A lot, especially since it has the increasingly rare Votrax chip inside. The Votrax speech chip alone fetches for about ~$300
this is creepy af

I "think" he said HelloElloElloEllo... But I could be wrong. There's code for it around somewhere. Someday I'll check. :)
