@@humanbeing9079 right there with you. The returns are diminishing (especially in regards to the human eye and our constant approximations of clarity during perceived motion), though the algorithms will only continue to get better as time goes on. I don't anticipate our bodies will get better at perceiving detail, but the ability for software to trick us into believing a picture is more detailed (I'd say 4k base res as the upper limit for a standard monitor size) is promising
@@retiredaccount0 it's more about pixel density than actual resolution (as you touched on) on a phone screen it's really hard to tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p (to my eyes) yet there is still a visible improvement when going from a large 4K TV to an 8K one (again, to my eyes). The only piece of tech I believe we truly _need_ higher resolution displays for are VR headsets, which probably need 4 times or more the number of pixels before they approach modern monitor levels of clarity.
Man, these truly are some dark times for PC building. I thought I had it bad when I built mine some 3 years back but this is just insanity, literally scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Note that the lack of hardware encoders on the 6500 does not mean it can't screen capture, it just means that the encoding will have to be done on the CPU. Most modern CPUs should have no trouble encoding 1080p 60fps video.
Phil, I really don't know how you've managed to make a video about computer hardware so damn funny. Running in the middle of the night with a pair of graphics cards was great, and "acidentally" dropping the 480 (5:48) actually made me burst out. you can just about make out the first milisecond of the noise it made falling down
Thanks for the info Philip. I'm thinking of upgrading my gpu and CPU and to be honest this looks like might be the time I actually do it. My 1050ti isn't what it used to be and I'm looking to get a vr headset in a few years possibly.
I would highly recommend buying a quest 2 (if you can get past the whole Meta/Facebook thing), using it in standalone mode for the time being, then buying a link cable or a 5Ghz router once your PC is up to spec.
Nice video. It really put the new cards into perspective and helped me get a felling for where they lie performance wise. I’m less familiar with the amd series of graphic cards, this was a great help.
The thing I hate the most of about the gpu situation is that my gpu is turning 5 years old at this point and I'm worried about what I will do if it breaks before this scalping madness is over
AMD lists the card as typical power usage @ 107W while the PCIe slot will only be able to deliver 75W. They also specify an additional 6-pin power connector in the general notes in the bottom of their page. Unfortunately it doesn't look like this chip will have a version without additional power unless a manufacturer heavily downclocks it.
3:54 while I'm also not an expert on video codecs and encoding, I do think you will still have the ability to screen capture stuff because software solutions exist, and the page doesn't mention it can't do H264 encoding under 4K. But this will mean there'll be problems if a screen recording software requires H265 and hardware encoding, though this is more to the fault of the screen recorder than the card. I myself haven't had luck with hardware encoding or H265 my self, as either Vegas Pro can't open them, or playback corrupts it's self, so it's not really a concern to me if I were to get the card.
Im not even looking for a new card right now because I was lucky enough to get my hands on a 2080 Super before they were sold out everywhere, but I somehow still really enjoy your videos. Thanks :)
This is a sad time for gamers. I am still rocking a RX570. And even though I can still play the games I like to play, it is showing its age. Really hoping for Intel to make something half decent for a decent price. My hopes are high because they have their own fabs whereas AMD has to share production capacity with Apple and other companies ordering from TSMC
Great points on the "so bad its great" RX6500 option. 4 years ago there was this mindset of getting powerful cards just because we could. If we are honest, most of us bought a high quality card first and then had to upgrade the rest of our equipment to get the most of it. The RX6500 isnt what we want but its likely what we need.
Somewhat surprised to see you finally taking sponsorships. By all means go ahead; you deserve it and nobody seems to mind, especially if you don't even mention it in the video
For the moment I am waiting. I just finished yesterday my PC. It has no graphics card, everything is running on a 5 5600G and still that is an upgrade from my laptop Although a card like this for people like me are still a wonderful evolution, and I will be thinking about it but not able to capture your screen is quite sad. I've had moment I wanted to capture my screen. A funny bug in a game, something insane that my friends will like, it's quite sad to see :(
Sooo, judging from those benchmarks, the 6500 XT will be about as fast as the 5500 XT 4GB. At a higher MSRP. And it'll cost the same as the 8 GB version. Which was released over 2 years ago. PROGRESS NVIDIA is just so far ahead right now, AMD's gonna need a miracle to catch up. I'm looking forward to the 3050. Probably not gonna be able to buy it, but I'm glad they're finally releasing it. Looks like the perfect card on paper.
1:28 Read the fine print in the original slide. Why does everyone miss the fact DLSS and RT are ON for that comparison? We have no idea how fast this thing actually is in rasterization. This test might be at 540p upscaled to 1080p.
I was really excited to finally upgrade my 660 with a 3080, but at this point I'll have to wait for the next series of cards. 660 is still going strong at least
A 1060 would be a nice upgrade to a 660... 3080 would probably be really overkill unless you still seriously like playing new games. just my $0.02. from a 660 to a 3060 or 3060 ti (way nicer) your socks would be blown off assuming you're pairing it with a modern cpu and memory.
I suspect both cards will be "priced" north of $500. It doesn't matter if miners will want it or not, scalpers will buy up every card they can and resell them at the highest price people will buy them at. I honestly think at this point prices will never fall, because this cycle will just continue until the industry collapses.
Rx 6500 xt seems like a hero for me. Although it only has 4gb of vram and can't record gameplay with h265 codec, I'm fine with that. I don't play newest AAA games. I still have a ton of unplayed old AAA games on my steam library because my current gaming setup doesn't have the juice it needed. My happiness doesn't have to be powerful, it just need to be wise.
Could you do a video about modern game optimization? I have noticed that my 6700k is starting to struggle on some games, but others run just fine and even look better. For example Ready or Not which has maps like CSGO or a HL 2 mod, but it has a lot of FPS drops even though there isn't much to interact with and not a ton of NPCs. HL Alyx, War Thunder, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, Deep Rock Galactic, Steel Division 2 etc. run fine and have larger maps, more NPCs, smarter AI and more interaction with the environment. I know Ready or Not is in early access, but its the most recent game I played where this is very noticeable. You've done great videos about HL and CS with a lot of technical analysis and I would love to see you analyze some modern games and how they are optimized/unoptimized.
Im really lucky I splashed out a few years ago and got a 1080Ti, I didnt plan on buying a new card for a few years and it still handles all the games I play. I think I'd break even if I sold it today ... 4 years later.
The reason why they cut video encoding on 6500XTs and by extension all Navi 24 die is because of die size concern. AMD wants Navi 24 die to rule the low end before ARC release, by cutting out encoding it saves around 15mm2 of die space and they can produce more.

I'm just going to sit tight and wait patiently. Fingers crossed the market will sort itself out in a couple years
Budget cards with fast and clever upscaling are the future, through and through.
Maybe when the baseline of gaming gets up to 1440p and above.
People always regurgitate the uPsCaLiNg argument, ignoring the significantly drop off in quality you see in all upscaling solutions.
The only piece of tech I believe we truly _need_ higher resolution displays for are VR headsets, which probably need 4 times or more the number of pixels before they approach modern monitor levels of clarity.
not really. Just for making more money with shitty gpu's
I always have liked how much character your videos have (rare for tech oriented channels)
5:54 a joke that hurt to my wallet
I love your videos dude. The comedy, how balanced and thoughtful you are. Never change mate!
The waifus are getting to him, they're even on his cup now.
Good title/image change - I had no idea what it was about before the switch.
oh good old clips of Philip running around the city like a headless chicken.
I love the hilariousness of both the situation and the comedy in your videos
Wish I had a 1050ti, my 1030 can handle most things but I would prefer to play cyberpunk above 25fps
Nice video. It really put the new cards into perspective and helped me get a felling for where they lie performance wise. I’m less familiar with the amd series of graphic cards, this was a great help.
Always love these irl footages of you
I didn't even get through the LITERAL first 3 seconds without pausing and laughing.
The thing I hate the most of about the gpu situation is that my gpu is turning 5 years old at this point and I'm worried about what I will do if it breaks before this scalping madness is over

This increased production value, with this video and the matrix video have made my year.
3050 really doesn't look that bad
3:54 while I'm also not an expert on video codecs and encoding, I do think you will still have the ability to screen capture stuff because software solutions exist, and the page doesn't mention it can't do H264 encoding under 4K. But this will mean there'll be problems if a screen recording software requires H265 and hardware encoding, though this is more to the fault of the screen recorder than the card. I myself haven't had luck with hardware encoding or H265 my self, as either Vegas Pro can't open them, or playback corrupts it's self, so it's not really a concern to me if I were to get the card.
Always love when you do IRL skits
5:54 pulling a Linus, nice
Im not even looking for a new card right now because I was lucky enough to get my hands on a 2080 Super before they were sold out everywhere, but I somehow still really enjoy your videos. Thanks :)
6500XT is an RX 480 4GB with less features, less PCIe lanes, and half the memory bandwidth at the same price.

This is a sad time for gamers. I am still rocking a RX570. And even though I can still play the games I like to play, it is showing its age.
Really hoping for Intel to make something half decent for a decent price. My hopes are high because they have their own fabs whereas AMD has to share production capacity with Apple and other companies ordering from TSMC
nope, Intel is using TSMC for its graphics cards.
Are you overclocking your rx570?
@@tavinl No. I guess I kinda lost the silicon lottery because it gets really instable at slightly higher clocks.
Also, it'd make a lot more noise
I did not expect to see four times F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel from 2016 talking about games for RUclips.
0:38 - napoleon dynamite reference?
Great points on the "so bad its great" RX6500 option. 4 years ago there was this mindset of getting powerful cards just because we could. If we are honest, most of us bought a high quality card first and then had to upgrade the rest of our equipment to get the most of it. The RX6500 isnt what we want but its likely what we need.
It will need a 6 pin.
107watts is more than the pcie slot can supply by itself (75watts)
looking back 1060s started at 250, insane how even MSRP us largely more expensive then past cards
The running ALWAYS gets me hahahaha

Somewhat surprised to see you finally taking sponsorships. By all means go ahead; you deserve it and nobody seems to mind, especially if you don't even mention it in the video
Imagine going outside at night and you see a man with his stomach out and with gpus in hand running around the street
For the moment I am waiting. I just finished yesterday my PC. It has no graphics card, everything is running on a 5 5600G and still that is an upgrade from my laptop
Although a card like this for people like me are still a wonderful evolution, and I will be thinking about it but not able to capture your screen is quite sad. I've had moment I wanted to capture my screen. A funny bug in a game, something insane that my friends will like, it's quite sad to see :(
I think OBS CPU encoding will still work. It will require much more performance overhead, but at least it will still be possible.
You will have about 2 days to buy the rtx 3050 after launch. Start saving now
Cpu capture will still work
Sooo, judging from those benchmarks, the 6500 XT will be about as fast as the 5500 XT 4GB. At a higher MSRP. And it'll cost the same as the 8 GB version. Which was released over 2 years ago.
PROGRESS
NVIDIA is just so far ahead right now, AMD's gonna need a miracle to catch up.
I'm looking forward to the 3050. Probably not gonna be able to buy it, but I'm glad they're finally releasing it. Looks like the perfect card on paper.
5:54 Philip channeling his inner Linus
Nice fx at the beginning
1:28 Read the fine print in the original slide. Why does everyone miss the fact DLSS and RT are ON for that comparison? We have no idea how fast this thing actually is in rasterization. This test might be at 540p upscaled to 1080p.
Great way of shaking up the formula of your videos
Amazing production value lol
6:34 PCI-E lane can provide only 75W. Another 6 Pin connector will do the job
The hero thats not any better than its 5 yo equivalent. What a fucking hero
The music went hard in this one.
I love your 90s synth vibe

If you think about it, raytracing has killed the graphics card market.
Im really lucky I splashed out a few years ago and got a 1080Ti, I didnt plan on buying a new card for a few years and it still handles all the games I play. I think I'd break even if I sold it today ... 4 years later.
Everyone keeps hoping for eth2.0 probably not realizing that miners will just move to a different crypto that can get mined on gpu
great video especially the ending i will think of budget cards now as batman thanks
The reason why they cut video encoding on 6500XTs and by extension all Navi 24 die is because of die size concern. AMD wants Navi 24 die to rule the low end before ARC release, by cutting out encoding it saves around 15mm2 of die space and they can produce more.
Can't wait for 500$+ 3050 cards ☺️☺️☺️
Not like I could get a 3070 or 3060 for about that much around 13-14 months ago
