- Bobby Manning and John Zannis of The Garden Report react (before Schroder-Theis Deal) to some of the Celtics trades at the deadline where they acquired Derrick White for Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, 2022 first-round pick protected 1-4.

Derrick White was one of the main focus of opposing defense on the spurs. Now he will be left open often with doubles on the Jays. I think like richardson he will be more efficient shooting on this team. I am excited to see our defense and how long before anyone scores 100 on us again.
Late 1st round picks turn into more Nesmith and Langfords....We did good pumping up JRs value and packaging him up. Not a home run as we gave up real value, but solid double from trader Brad.
D White was a late first round pick
White played USA with the Jays and udoka was on the staff. He's better then Richardson
Smart was on that team also if I'm not mistaken
Jaylen and marcus both werent on that team jaylen was injured and got replaced and smart never was
Ime Udoka was on the Spurs staff when they drafted Derrick 29th in the draft, and coached him all the way up to 2019. And just an FYI he’s better then everyone on your team not named Brown or Tatum.
I lose brain cells reading half of this fan base’s dumb comments. White is a damn good player and a better shooter than people realize, not to mention he’s one of the best defensive guards in the league. None of us have the benefit of hindsight, let’s just wait how this thing shakes out instead of immediately jumping to conclusions
Absolutely agree with you! White is an all defensive caliber level guard! Can definitely play off ball alongside Smart with Tatum and Brown on the floor dudes 3pt% will be alot like JRichs 3pt% that went up getting wide open 3s and shoots 48% on corner 3s! This team is gonna be straight nasty defensively!

Celtics cleaned the trash out and improved defensively. Not much more we could ask for. I know they wanted a smart for Collins deal done so that will have to wait til summer
We lost 2 good wing defenders, but got rid of all the guys who were below average or lacking chemistry.
Thies and White are going to be good additions to the bench. Which has been our real problem, blowing leads etc.
They got rid of 2 useful guys in Schroder and Richardson, they aren’t trash. I assume you’re referring to Kanter and them.
Langford is going to be good in another year.

I love how you guys try to explain how they became worse yet better. I never seen the mental gymnastics people used to explain away how a terrible Celtic team is actually a great team or explaining how terrible player like Marcus Smart is a great player. LOL. I quit I can't do this anymore man they refuse to get better they go in the opposite direction and everyone that covers a team thing say actually went in a good direction have fun
Really only time will tell, it's hard to tell what kind of player White could honestly be with the talent that was on the roster in SA. Granted now they have Murray who has turned into a great player and Johnson on the up and up. Hopefully White comes to Boston and wants to push the ball, and can learn to space the floor and be an effective shooter while keeping his 2 way mentality.
White played under Pop no doubt he can push the ball lol also udoka coached him for 2 years in SA as well. Whites 3pt% fir career is 34.5% and his 3pt shooting has been down this year due to who he had around him which was no one lol Whites a 48% corner 3 shooter and can play off ball alongside Smart! This team is gonna be nasty asf defensively! Opponents offenses better bring their hard hats and lunch pails cause it's gonna be a long day for them!

John is on point. Very expensive, another combo guard with same style of play. It also not going to help Pritchard’s development.
Massive upgrade. Pritchard will likely not be in the NBA in two years unless he massively upgrades his play.

Got a core player in Derrick White that will make plays for everyone. If we have two shooters on the wings with the Jays and the ball popping, it's over.
Feel like we couldve got murray if we had packaged smart into this trade too. Maybe another pick too
And you would be wrong, Derrick was traded because he is a better fit being a playmaker and scorer when paired with someone who plays out of ISO like Tatum, or Derozan last year. Murray has flourished since Derozan was traded because he need the ball in his hand to set up the offense and be effective in the pick and roll. Derrick has been okay but his inconsistency shooting makes it easier to move him.
U gave up way too much for a guy that has no all star upside.
This aged poorly now Derrick is a fan favorite and a NBA Champ
I like Langford, Shroder more .. but face it, they got rid of players that weren't playing and romeo needs more development. Still missing a piece tho, also they need to play Hauser more, We need that KNOCK DOWN shooter for a quick 9+ points per game
Still don't have a real point guard, so the J's will need to still have playmaking duties

From Jan 2nd 2024, this was a STEAL. White has been playing at an all star level this season
derrick white is an upgrade over richardson but they definitely lost their depth. brad definitely lost the trade but he made the team better which is something you'd never hear people say about DA.
I have a feeling White will end up being worth it. I can even see potential all star. Seems he's getting better even though he's not exactly a rookie.

Seems like Brad took all those assets Danny got and traded them. That was smart to win. Danny seemed to love getting so many picks that these drafted young guys didn't even get a chance to play. There is such thing now I believe as too many picks unless you space them out over 10 years.

We trade with the right team but the wrong guard 🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️ Idk why we like to do this they. Really trade for a combo guard when u need a point that’s just crazy to me and u gave up a first round pick for it. I wouldn’t mind if u had to trade 2 first plus Richardson and Romeo for Murray but he was the right guy special if u didn’t had to give up smart for it I would be okay now I see that we was serious about this year but what they did to me it just 😑🙄

Spurs slightly won the trade in my opinion. Coming from a spurs fan, White has hit his ceiling, and for a rebuilding team it was time to let him go...But don't get me wrong he is a very high IQ playmaker with tons of hustle. He is inconsistent with the three ball and his shooting but overall he will fit well enough with the C's. The spurs to me get more value than expected for White. You get a nice vet in JRich, a young talent in Romeo Langford, AND their first round pick. Solid trade for the Spurs as a rebuilding team. I'm pretty sure the Celtics are also happy with the deal but objectively, the Spurs ended up getting more out of the deal for a player who is a solid backup pg/sg and decent starter at best.

White runs like a midget. He does not have a stride at all. It takes him like six steps to get from the free-throw line to the rack.
He stands up really straight too, and has a long dribble that accentuates it. He has a nice spin move which makes sense with all the little steps he takes.
I just hope this guy is really a 15 and five guy and not just having those numbers because San Antonio had no one else to put the ball in the hoop.
I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on Earth who would criticize someones stride hahaha. But all great scores have that 6 ft stride.

If anything he’s about to average more assists. Spurs have one of the best most efficient passers in the nba in Murray and he still manages to get 5.5 behind him. Also better team now means more guys to pass to and get assists. I think he will be a 12/7/3/1/1 type guy here

Spurs easily won this deal, they have young developmental players and this speeds up their rebuild, also got trade assets in JR and Romeo. Celtics severely overpaid for a B- combo guard who is an inconsistent shooter, playmaking and defense will improve I’m sure, but this doesn’t make you a contender, may cost the Celts when going after Beal or Dame down the road

Derrick white will play better with the Celtics as he will have more space than he did on the spurs. He’s having a slight down year which is Richardson-level. Derrick white is also a better defender
Look at White's 2022 highlights he's a good fit, pushes the ball and a good defender.
