Yep. The quality thing is super annoying. I don't use yt music anymore because it sucks compared to the old Google play music. If the price goes up anymore or they try to add ads its definitely time to switch to nebula or floatplane
Just because you don't find it worthwhile doesn't mean no one does. Lots of people like to use RUclips to fall asleep to but are woken up by ads. This lets you avoid that more cheaply (music videos don't autoplay...or never have for me). You don't have to buy it so isn't it good people who might find it worthwhile have the option?
@@petergerdes1094 ah yes, nothing says worthwhile like RUclips selling me the answer to a problem they themselves created when they took away creators' ability to fully control their monetization options.
I keep saying I'd buy Premium Lite if all it did was block ads, but clearly they're too fking greedy to even consider it. They want us to _pay_ to see ads anyway.
I absolutely despise ads and will always do everything I can to avoid them, until the point there is no way to avoid them on a product, at which point I will refuse to ever use that product again
There needs to be a law that, for businesses making over a million dollars in revenue a year, they need to offer an ad free experience for no more than either $50 a year or twice the median profit per customer per year (whichever is greater, though it would be $50) Companies are so desperate to get a couple bucks in ad revenue that they ruin the experience for users and try to charge rediculous amounts to unruin it.
So RUclips increased the price of Premium everywhere, introduce a new plan that claims "no ads" and expect people to buy a "cheaper" subscription that's featureless but also shows ads in other parts of the platform? That's just sugarcoating with extra steps.
All I want is an ad-free experience on YT without having to also pay for YT Music, which I never use, but makes up 2/3rds of the price. I'd be completely down for an ad-free subscription for 5 bucks.

"You will see ads on music and shorts." WHAT THE F*CK RUclips. ADS ON SHORTFORM CONTENT? I guess RUclips is REALLY feeling the burn in giving into the tiktok brianrot but making it ad free in the first place.
Yes, RUclips has ads on shorts. Back when I watched them, they were baked into the feed and you could just scroll to skip. Idk if anything has changed since then
@@Phuckitall I use RUclips ReVanced / RVX to remove shorts from my feed and make the app bearable. Also has no ads, video downloading and it's free. If they made it so you can use any old version of the app with Premium, I'd actually consider it, as the older layouts were better imo. Why don't companies do this? It would benefit both them (more money) and the consumer (an actually decent user experience).
Still a positive no - they either drop the price right down, or adblock all the way. Google started to wreck this service years ago, anybody else remember how RUclips used to be many years ago? Ads at on the sidebar and that was it. On my tablet where I can't block their nonsense, I have never once watched an advert and thought, oh that looks good. If anything, intrusive adverts just put me off.
Google's strategy usually involves testing the waters and slowly boiling the frog, so I wouldn't surprised if this succeeds they will just straight up add ads to regular YT premium (despite already hiking prices, though it's still reasonable for me), if they do that or uncouple YT music/add ads to it, then I'm just gonna cancel my subscription and use revanced + newpipe on all my android devices. I support paying a premium subscription to a service I use a lot given the high bandwidth costs of video streaming, but if they're just gonna make the service worse for paying customers then I don't see any point in paying them to screw me over.
They already increased Premium cost substantially, like 50% more in last year alone. I already cancelled mine, so you probably should before the bill will surprise you sooner or later.
If I didn't already use YT Music it would be ridiculous. I feel like $3 to $5 no ads would be fine for most users, hell, $3 to $5 for no ads limited to 1080p with a separate 4k tier would be a great compromise. As it is... If people don't already use YT music or are unwilling to cancel Spotify, the value just isn't there.
@@hanifarroisimukhlis5989 they raised it this month for me, I have a family plan which they nearly doubled in price in my region, it's now about the same as getting two individual plans, so still worth it for me. 22 euros for prime. Jesus christ. RUclips's been getting out of hand with the amount of ads lately on the free version and that's probably no coincedence.

RUclips shows me ads on premium and when I emailed them they tried telling me the ads are features. They are ads telling me about features on youtube premium but I know they are meant to keep me paying for youtube premium
RUclips should be rolling out AV1 encode for more or good quality VP9 for medium sized channel ( maybe small as well). Because a lot of video quality lately looks blurry even though it has 1080p. RUclips expect us to pay premium for the enhanced high bitrate video. Good quality encoding like AV1 would reduce medium to small not upload the video in 8k to force RUclips to put AV1 in their videos.
I think the way Twitter is doing blocking is how it should be done. There's a trillion ways someone can stalk your profile anyway. It's a public space and this will only make it more open - you don't get to choose your audience, but you can choose to not listen to them / see them.
I constantly think the same thing! Usually, when you want something, you go searching for it and try to find the lowest price, you don't just go buy shit because some horribly loud ad had an annoying voice screaming about it at you, and most of the time you're better off buying second-hand. Surely the advertising just can't have the ROI that makes it worth it. If they spent that money on making a /good/ product that got good word-of-mouth it'd be 10x more successful than a shit product built down to the lowest cost and advertised to death until everyone already hates it. I think they just assume that advertising psychology from the 50s is somehow still relevant, when we've all evolved along with the advertising landscape.
@@PinataOblongata I'd say "Best price/cost ratio" or even "Meets your needs (at all)" rather than strictly lowest price, but yea. And the inventors of neural networks have gotten a nobel prize in physics because it caused a huge amount of progress in physics research
"AGI" is next to meaningless term to begin with. One can move the goalposts of it "not being general enough" for as long as there is something in the universe it still can kinda suck at. Each conversation about "AGI" needs to first establish what the expectations are here. Mathematical perfection or just being as good or marginally better than an average human with most tasks? Latter being so vaguely defined that it isn't that useful either as a metric.

Machine learning, or big data, neural networks or ai, whatever the current name is, these are simply tools. The best most useful of these "ai" tools are highly specific and work very closely with people who have real "i" AGI requires a completely different way of thinking and computer use compared to the brute force methods of openai. Lower the barrier to entry and people will happily pay a couple bucks for no ads and nothing else. Same happened with Spotify, music was expensive, piracy was easy, they came in and gave a cheap alternative and made bank.
I ONLY want no ads :( I don't care about anything else. There's NO WAY RUclips is making more than $5-10/mo (which, honestly, I'd be willing to pay) through ads with me. And I consider myself to be on youtube more than the average person.
RUclips pays like $3-5 per 1000 ad views to creators. So you'd need to be watching thousands of ads a month to go over $5. And that's the worst case, I'm pretty sure youtube takes a smaller cut than the creator so it would be even more views.

Yep. The quality thing is super annoying. I don't use yt music anymore because it sucks compared to the old Google play music. If the price goes up anymore or they try to add ads its definitely time to switch to nebula or floatplane
There’s still a setting for high quality as default.

$12 a month to not have basically any additional features and still have a trashy ad ridden experience? Yeah RUclips has some real geniuses up there.
As long as enough people subscribe, I bet those same geniuses will get a raise.
@@petergerdes1094 Meanwhile, I'm able to cut all ads and get all the nice features of Premium for... $0.
Yeah they are genius, they'll probably make money on it
@@petergerdes1094 ah yes, nothing says worthwhile like RUclips selling me the answer to a problem they themselves created when they took away creators' ability to fully control their monetization options.
$12 a month to see LESS adds is CRAZY. Google lost their minds.

There needs to be a law that, for businesses making over a million dollars in revenue a year, they need to offer an ad free experience for no more than either $50 a year or twice the median profit per customer per year (whichever is greater, though it would be $50)
Companies are so desperate to get a couple bucks in ad revenue that they ruin the experience for users and try to charge rediculous amounts to unruin it.
So RUclips increased the price of Premium everywhere, introduce a new plan that claims "no ads" and expect people to buy a "cheaper" subscription that's featureless but also shows ads in other parts of the platform? That's just sugarcoating with extra steps.
That's if you buy it via a phone or tablet. I pay $14 a month for full premium
It's why I won't get premium. $5 a month would have been my max, still is, but it's got to really be ad-free.
All I want is an ad-free experience on YT without having to also pay for YT Music, which I never use, but makes up 2/3rds of the price. I'd be completely down for an ad-free subscription for 5 bucks.
$12 a month for RUclips with "limited ads"? No, thank you, that is more then Netflix costs.
I believe that was $12AUD. It'd be much less in USD because I only pay like $15 for premium

I guess RUclips is REALLY feeling the burn in giving into the tiktok brianrot but making it ad free in the first place.
Yes, RUclips has ads on shorts. Back when I watched them, they were baked into the feed and you could just scroll to skip. Idk if anything has changed since then

Will Never buy anything from a youtube advertisement!!
Cost: 15,339,520 MB * $0.02/MB = $306,790.40 @ 2 cents/MB
Thats for 20 seconds of a speed test using 1Tb/s
Those speeds aren't for personal devices, they're for carrier backhaul.
Spoiler alert: "enhanced" bitrate is just AV1. RUclips is literally gatekeep encoding now.
Can't wait for an Oxygen atom to block my 6G signal
I think the way Twitter is doing blocking is how it should be done. There's a trillion ways someone can stalk your profile anyway. It's a public space and this will only make it more open - you don't get to choose your audience, but you can choose to not listen to them / see them.
What i want to know is who is paying for these ads!
I never in my entire 40 years pf existance bought something because showed up on an internet ad
I once bought a Mountain Dew kickstart because I thought the ad was hilarious. This was over 10 years ago. So I guess an ad got like $2 tops out of me
I constantly think the same thing!
Buying something just because you've had ti shoved in your face is not something I remotely understand¹.
I'll even go so far as to say that if something does end up getting shoved in my face in the few places I cannot avoid ads and that happens more than once or twice I'll outright put that shit on a blacklist. Don't care how good it may be, not getting that.
¹ Then again I would argue that those most vulnerable to advertising are those who don't have the time/awareness to research which tends to correlate with a low socioeconomic background which in turn makes ads even more predatory and immoral-
(Erhm. Shoot me before I give a ted talk about ads in their current form/purpose being fundamentally immoral.)
@@PinataOblongata If there is something (successful) businesses are good at, it's making money. Obviously there is still good return on investment when companies spend so much on it. And honestly, I still think all the advertising psychology established in the 50's is still just as relevant today. There are so many biases that make even just being aware of something so much of a leg up.

AGI ain't happening anytime soon. LLMs aren't even close to AGI
Doesn't stop even all those researchers from falling for it. At the end they'll just call their latest chatbot AGI, it's not like most people understand enough to know that's horseshit.
AGI isn't as far away as pessimists think, but not as close as optimists think.
But it doesn't even take AGI to be crazy transformative to the world.
I think deep mind is going to see big returns on their research sooner than openai. They've already made technologies no human can do, like protein prediction and a protein designer, and they're working on math research ai.
@@ayoCC The scientists who won the nobel prize in chemistry and physics worked 40yrs studying the problem, working with computer scientists and developing tools to solve the problem at hand. It is most appropriate that the computer scientists shared the prize this time. It is though super annoying to see it reported in every media that "ai" figured it out.
Machine learning, or big data, neural networks or ai, whatever the current name is, these are simply tools. The best most useful of these "ai" tools are highly specific and work very closely with people who have real "i"
AGI requires a completely different way of thinking and computer use compared to the brute force methods of openai. My theory is that in the prolonged period of low interest rates investors were desperate to dump their money into anything that looks new to get a return, those with the most eye catching claims got the cash and now we're here. Its a shame they didn't put money into something useful like fusion energy or new battery tech but those are pretty mundane when the counter-offer is to invest in a (tech) god
@@ayoCC yes, but AGI would also require that AI be able to cook a soufflé that tasted delicious and teach history without a hint of bias. It's going to be a long, long time until then, if ever
