Sun Visors: Keep or Delete?

  • Yep, I deleted the sun visors since I rarely use them when driving my 76 Corvette, and I did not want to spend an absurd amount of money rebuilding these.
They can be rebuilt as the rods, elbows, springs, retainers, etc., are readily available, but I prefer the cleaner and open look without them obstructing the view.
Anyway. if you decide to remove yours permanently or repair them, this video will provide a general overview as to how they are held in place and what's necessary to properly remove the sun visors to work on them.
The passenger's side sun visor is quite an elaborate piece of engineering and ingenuity as it incorporates a mirror that lights up the moment you rotate it down.
Personally, I think all that "luxury" is more appropriate for a Cadillac than a Vette, but that's what was popular back in the 1980s. A gaudy attempt at convenience and luxury.
I hope you find the video helpful if you need to work on yours.
    Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

Great information! I've always thought the sun visor's seem so out of place on Corvette's when the T tops are off but their needed also. I never knew they went to such a fancy mirror and light, my 79 just has a simple mirror with no lights on the passenger side, and my 69 has the comfort weave visor's with no mirror at all. I've thought about removing the mirror on my 79 because I think it looks bad shining in the sun with the T tops out but it appears to be glued on, but my wife uses it and I bet she'd skin me if I removed it!😂

I am guessing that as they got close to the 80s, GM was trying to make up for an aging design, and one way to do that was to add stuff nobody really needed or wanted, such as courtesy light delays, or in this case, lighted vanity sun visor for the passenger. I guess they were ok in Buicks and Cadillacs, but totally out of place in Corvettes, again, IMO. And their construction was really flimsy to put it mildly.
I don’t mind the ones on my 76, but I like them tucked against the headliner and never use them so I don’t really notice them. Just a personal preference.
      Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻

Mine is also a 79. No problem with the sun as long as the cover is still attached. Because of a flimsy hinge design, covers easily broke off.

My vanity mirror cover is also broken and missing. Do you know if the mirror and light portion snap into the visor or glued in? Thanks.

Hey William. That’s a good question and, since I was curious and happened to have mine handy, I decided to take it apart.
The short answer is that they snap in place with two retainers in the back of the mirror that have to be pressed into the cardboard inside the visor. In addition, there are two small twist locks that secure the top portion of the frame. So the mirror also secures the frame (with the lights on each side) to the visor. I don’t think mine had a cover. And if it did it was missing.
Anyway, I will post a short video to show all the components and how they are secured to the sun visor. I hope I’ll be able to get that video edited and uploaded by next week. 😊👍🏻

Great. Look forward to seeing that video, and thanks for taking the time to do one! My mirror and lights are attached but the little switch has fallen out.

This is how the Mirror is Secured to the Sun Visor

Do you know if the tiny bulbs are plug in or are they wired to the harness?

I’m pretty sure they were small plug-in bulbs.

Does the wiring run inside the upper windshield molding?

    • @76vette
      @76vette  10 месяцев назад +1

It appears to be routed inside the A pillar. 😊👍🏻

So I’ve ordered a new aftermarket vanity mirror (any originals are in bad shape. And you were correct, the wiring runs down inside the A-pillar. What’s tricky, is the connector plug is behind the dash. So in order to attach the new wiring harness, you need to remove 2 screws on the side of the dash and slide it back enough to push the connector through. Or you could just cut the wires. But that’s not cool. Did you already know that information?

@inell6 Had no idea. It’s too elaborate of a system IMO, so if I ever decide to install sunvisors, I’ll try to find plain ones. There’s no need for illuminated mirrors. 😊👍🏻

I agree, there really is no need, but I’m trying to get it back to original as possible. Another thing I noticed, on the 79 and maybe earlier the 2 holes that the mirror secures to on the visor are smaller than the 80’s models. So they don’t need the plastic crown retainers.
