A simple straight forward design that is practical that works. Nice.
Thank you for presenting this. Looking forward to building one of my own. There are lots of short log pieces needing to be cut that have been stacked up for a couple years just waiting for such a system as yours. Time to get busy. Thank you again.
    Stay blessed.

Thank You. I’m looking to build a jig of this nature, this is far and above the best I’ve seen.
To improve the hold on the log adding sharp pointed screws that stick out about 1/8” in the clamp pads.

This is an Awesome innovation! I'm definitely making one. So simple, safe and secure, and is so easy to adjust to and size or shape log. You should apply for a patent on this. It's WAY nicer and more versatile than that "Little Ripper" gig that someone designed and is selling for around $380. Blahh!
    Thanks so much for sharing.

I like your design; it's simple but effective. Being able to angle the log is a good feature. You could extend your log length by using roller stands on the infeed and outfeed side of the table. (My bandsaw doesn't have T-slots.) I've sawed green logs in the past and they were very heavy and awkward to run through the saw. Your fixture would have helped a lot. I'll keep your design in mind if I need to mill logs in the future.

Picked up a Rikon 10-326 14" bandsaw last week. For the main purpose of re-sawing to make book matched veneers etc. I've watched at least 50 videos of people's "sleds" which all used screws to hold the log... All I'm thinking is blades are to expensive to risk hitting a screw...
I really like your set up. Super easy, clean design which produces consistent results. I will be building a variation of your sled. Thank you for the upload.

Nice jig, I use a hand held power planer to make a 3" to 4" flat on the log so it will sit securely on the sled. It takes about 10 passes on a log that's 8" or so in diameter. That takes about 4 minutes, then I'm ready to resaw.

It would be good to weld some extensions and/or cleats(spikes) to those jaws for larger heavier logs.

Glue a square of 60-grit sandpaper to each of the clamp jaws and it will grip the wood with no slipping.

Here is a short video of cutting a walnut log on a bandsaw sled. I use screws and a battery drill for a quick tack. When I am cutting off the 1" boards off the log the screws are in the sap wood which is mainly put in the firepit. The wood is green and I rarely find after air drying for a year as it's stickered nice and flat then jointing and running it through the planer do I see any screw damage. The wood is pretty much free so it's money saved by a long shot. These logs were in a guys back yard for about 6 years. Here is the video (3) RESAW Rotten Walnut Log - RUclips

This is just the kind of jig I'm looking for and I will definitely be building your version soon. I'm trying to work out how long to make the base... it looks like the length of the base would essentially be equal to the maximum length of log you wanted to cut, and that the miter bar would need to be the same length? I found an aluminum t-bar style miter bar on Amazon that's 48" long so I'm thinking I'll use that bar and make my sled/base 48", which would let me cut 48" logs (with proper infeed & outfeed support of course). Thanks for posting this video and sharing your design!

Just a thought, but with stability being what I perceive as the number one goal, wouldn't using both miter gage slots be twice as good as one
? While I realize I will be cutting a slot just ahead of the backwards end of the sled and allow about a 40" log sometimes, I cant help thinking 2 runners will be pretty smooth cutting...At worst I can always cut all the way and remove one side if I'm wrong..

    • @CHICAGOHAND
      @CHICAGOHAND  3 года назад +1

Not quite sure how that will work. The stability issue for me is with the log being pulled down towards the table and causing a dangerous situation. That is why I sometimes need to use shims underneath the log to stabilize it.

When you mention drilling screws to hold the log, you do realize the screws are basically only in the slab cut/bark right? I just bought the Harbor freight clamp and will try your version. The clamp will certainly be faster. I had access to a roller table to allow me a chance to make infeed and out feed tables which appear to provide a great deal of support in addition to my tee slot miter bars.
