Exploring Inside Out's Perfect Musical Structure

- How can we visualise film music? In this essay I look at a new approach to film music analysis that places the score within the context of the narrative, allowing us to consider the effect of music on the whole story, on the whole film at a glance. And to do this, I use Michael Giacchino’s beautiful and evocative score for Disney Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’.

I always like to say this and UP's soundtracks are probably the best soundtracks ever made to connect with emotionally, they are truly a top standard for other movies soundtrack arrangements

This is one of the few films I've ever seen to have made me cry, and I havent seen it in years. This analysis captured that old feeling and truly made me feel raw emotion . Incredible video. I need to watch inside out again now!
I've read the Simmons piece, and it is pretty technical and unapproachable by anyone but a graduate student. In contrast, your video is fascinating and more importantly, it gives a powerful taste for more. I'm not surprised that people here are saying they want to watch more of your videos.
I don't think music tells the story, I see it as a powerful way of making a film more meaningful by suggesting emotions that the protagonists are undergoing or that an observer of the story might be feeling as they watch the events unfold. The musical themes bring the story to life by nudging us to imagine what it would be like to be the characters, and for the story to be unfolding in real life. Once we start to feel these emotions we are drawn deeper into the story, and are more committed to imagining it really taking place.
In any movie, image and voice frame the setting and narrative. But music is the voice of emotion. Without it, we become lost in our own perceptions and preconceptions. The best movie sound tracks tell us how to feel.
Could very well be being a dad of four daughters, but Inside Out has always been at the top of my favorite Pixar movies and it is truly because of the emotional response. It was so cool to see how it was plotted out and how the score really represents a piece of the whole, but where the whole, when done well, is greater than the sum of it's parts.

The "warm" reading of sadness' melody is very similar to Life and Death, also composed by Giacchino (for Lost).

The balance of emotions in music (and film scores) make each end of the emotional spectrum more meaningful than what they would be on their own. This video just happens to explain that in an amazing way! :)

giacchino often does this with his soundtracks and i also recommend checking out his work for the show lost
i fell in Love with Soundtracks when i realized that they can tell a story in their own way , especially when the themes get transformed - i think no one can do that better than giacchino

The main theme of this movie is one of those I can just conjure up out of memory and get it stuck in my head instantly, like those of some the most iconic film scores.
One of my favorite movies of all time.
And now, they have done it again in Inside Out 2!!
Something else is the “chase theme” at the start of act 3. The pizz stepwise motion and the unusual time signature with an extra beat makes the unsettled feel stronger. It’s used when chasing Riley and chasing sadness.

That would be really cool, I adore the music from Wild hunt, it is, in my humble opinion, far better than that from the show.
I know 8-bit has the video game music analysis thing kind of on lock, but I would love to see this channel's perspective on some of the great video game scores. I think this channel's tone would fit especially well with Journey. The score in that game is the primary means of communicating the story.
Could you do some analysis on Thomas Newman's Finding Nemo score?

Does the bundle of joy melody change from being on the beat, to being syncopated to then being on the beat again? If so, might that be a microcosm of the story itself!

And, isn´t it obvious that the score is influenced by the film and vice-versa?
Or even more obvious that the film and score when presented together make part of the same work of art?
