@@theexclusivemoviereview2838 True season 1 had a better flow to it , though season 2 wasn't bad hope to see more episodes and maybe even another season...season 2 ended weirdly to me.

@@Anthony-lz2dl yea I believe it was open ended. As was season one to a point. It's good though it leaves it mysterious and the possibily of a character or stories return in some form.

Dakota fanning wrecks my head in this. I don't know if it's just her character or the directing or what. Just close ups of big eyes and a dead pan face. No substance. Everything else was cool tho

I was reading the book while watching the series, and I must say the nailed it, except for the ending though, I found it too weak. In the book there's much more tension and suspense. You should def check it out

      It was rather anticlimactic.
      Spoiler alert!
I, at least, hoped the dirty cop would be caught for killing one of the rich family members.

I bought the book recently, after watching the show and I think they did a pretty good job, maybe the doctor, in the book I found him less depressed (?) maybe. And they changed some secondary things, but I really loved the show.

I agree that the characters were the best thing about the show, and they grew on me, and made me want to come back for more. But, to be honest, the series was a giant waste of potential for me. The case was interesting, sure, but the reveal, and especially the motivation of the killer (SPOILER ALERT: left totally unclear, as if they didn't really know how to motivate the killer in the end) were a letdown. There were also some interesting features of our protagonists, which were left hanging, like e.g. (SPOILER ALERT) the moment when Sara sees herself in the mirror as a young girl. I get that it is connected with the later reveals about her relation to her father but it really is quite unclear how we 're supposed to interpret that. As a show which delves into the human psyche, I expect a bit more than "we can't really be sure", "we don't know", "it's not important". I know that some of these things are a good intro, and will perhaps evolve in season 2, but I just wish they would do a deep dive more often than just scraping the surface.

I was glad they changed the date of the feast of St. John the Baptist to the right date. That really bothered me while reading the book. Couldn't Caleb Carr have checked that fact?

I loved this series and what drew me into the series was not only the story but the people involved (Cary Fukunaga, Hossein Amini, Daniel Bruhl, etc). I think Fukunaga and Amini knew how to pace the story and characters the best in my opinion and the episodes that they wrote were my favourites.
It’s a shame though that Hossein Amini hasn’t gotten any recent work due to some flops that weren’t really his fault (47 Ronin got interfered with heavily by Universal, and The Snowman wasn’t a finished due to the fact that they ran out of time to shoot 10-15% of the script.). Overall, he deserves more work since I loved Drive.

Have you watched Barry? It’s a show about a soldier who comes back from Afghanistan 🇦🇫 and finds that he doesn’t seem to be good at anything other than killing people.
    So he becomes a hitman.
Somewhere along the way he gets caught up in an acting class and realises that he loves acting and wants to put the hitman stuff behind him but the person who gives him the hits ends up getting himself and Barry involved in the Russian mob and everything spirals downward from there.
It’s a really good show kind of dark in se areas but also a comedy.
I think you should review it as the last episode was released yesterday and it was just renewed for a second season.
    Please watch it.

I agree with your review and also that you, like me, are driven to do a bit of research about real historical events and characters.
    Spoiler alert?
I loved the storyline about the nascent modern day police department led by Roosevelt and the struggles of women and Jews to get a foothold in it. Also how the police treated the rich versus the poor.
    Somethings never change!

    1. I love the John Mulaney insert, 2. I didn’t make the Mindhunters connection - but you’re right, there are a lot of parallels - good call!, 3. Agree, John was my fave character too! Question for you - What are your thoughts about these based-on-single-books shows (The Sinner, Big Little Lies, Alienist, etc.) continuing on expand into future seasons? I’m loving Handmaid’s Tale season 2 so far (the open ending & epilogue of the book lends itself very well to be explored), but I honestly don’t know if I NEED to see any more of the other shows...

The series really hooks you up, although some parts of it I've found really cringy (especially, interpersonal relationships and pop-psychology). At times, it gives you a feeling that this is an anime screen play or a work of Jane Austin fan-fiction adapted for the screen (I have not read the novel, can't comment on it).
On the positive side, the murder mystery itself seemed interesting, contrary to what most reviewers say. And I also liked the power play between JP Morgan and the young Theodore Roosevelt. So in the end this makes for some light binge-watching entertainment (if the gore does not put you off).
For a slightly more serious take on the same topic, I highly recommend BBC's "Murder Rooms: the Dark Beginning of Sharlock Homes" in the same style and almost the same premise (a XIXth century professor is trying to find a serial killer through the means of rudimentary forensic science, he is being helped by a young doctor who is in fact the future Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and by the first woman to enter medical college).

I just binged it on Amazon during my break. I watched it all in one day, it was that enthralling. Every character was complex and detailed, rich in history and personality.. Even the police captain had layers to him. I'm surprised it didn't get nominated for any acting awards at the emmys, though it did get six, including best limited series I believe. I honestly don't have a favorite character, which is very rare, but Sarah Howard and John Moore where definitely up there. My favorite non detective show right now is Claws. It's hilarious, slightly campy, but deals with complexity and social issues you wouldn't expect from the trailer alone. Every episode is different, exciting, and unique.

I'm 8 episodes in and I think the characters that drive the story are either unlikable, annoying, preachy, or all three.. Lazlo is straight garbage, he's the main protagonist but he's so damn self righteous.. he loves to put people on the spot, but when the same is done to him, he acts out.. His chemistry with his team, is almost non-existent, he berates them, belittles them and yet exploits them throughout the show.. What does he give them? and why do they stay? at least House and Sherlock were fun pricks who actually had smart things to say.. This asshole keeps asking questions and adds zero to the investigation. He needlessly antagonizes Roosevelt because (Teddy actually cooperates), but it doesn't come off as smooth, or charming, it's unlike how House handles Cuddy.. his supposed "friend" who he treats like shit (I mean even Wilson and Watson were treated way better) is the whipping boy of the season (again at least the other two i mention were remarkable characters). The strong woman of the show is so far a hot mess, hopefully the last 2 episodes resolve her arc. I found the twins are unremarkable, only there to serve the whims of Lazlo, there's not enough depth to them.. His team has zero chemistry, they don't compliment each other's skills. Hell, they barely like each other. Why are they even working on a case so deep!
Everything other than the characters were good. set design, atmosphere, theme, the plot, the antagonist.. They all make the show immersive and real.. that is, until Lazlo opens his god damn mouth..
