How to Grow Turkey Tail Mushrooms at Home

- Опубликовано: 5 авг 2024
- Turkey tail mushroom is a type of medicinal mushroom harvested around the world. It grows on the dead bark of hardwood trees and resembles a turkey tail with distinctive stripes in hues of brown, grey, tan and white. The turkey tail mushroom has a thick, leathery texture that makes it unpleasant to eat in its whole form. Instead, it’s typically consumed in the form of powder or tea.
Turkey tail mushrooms have a lengthy history in traditional Eastern medicine and are known for their immune system benefits. In traditional Chinese medicine, turkey tail mushroom is often brewed into a tea to fight infections, strengthen the immune system and boost energy. You can also find turkey tail mushrooms in a host of dietary supplement products, including capsules and tinctures.

I just got done reading though the comments and got my answer. I love that people are sharing info about mushrooms.
Interesting, It's rainy season in Ghana. I walked past a large tree trunk covered in Turkey tails. Nature way seems so organic and when we do it become so sterilized. I'm very interested in the medicinal properties and adding this to my creations..
Thats because we are trying to mimic what we see in nature.. In nature that turkey tail would of been eating and beating many times over in nature.. many turkey tail mushrooms dont fruit because of competition.. we do sterilzed to up our chances of our goal.
Nice video! Thanks for including the approximate time for thing to happen!
I’ve grown about 3 turkey tail
Blocks with success now and it’s my favorite now . Going to make tinctures soon . Your videos are awesome man ! I also have your TT and Lions mane LC syringes !
Thank you for watching and good luck! 🍄
Wow first vid I've ever seen on how to grow turk tails! Love it good for you.... Never thought of growing them myself bc I live in north fl and they are pretty much everywhere year round if you know where to look for them!!! Nice job! I'm gonna try this! Thanks!!!!
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it! Good luck!🍄
Thank you it was an amazing video, could you please also make a video on button mushrooms? For some reason there aren't any videos on that specific mushroom 🙄
currently trying to spawn a gallon jar fermented wood chips and brown rice all fermented over one week then sterilized the contents of the jar plan to inoculate the jar this week
Any sunlight and air flow specifically needed?
Great video!
I've a question. My turkey tail Myc grows on the top half of the grain bag. I thought it was bacteria, but I just transfered the mason jar to a bigger bar (2pounds myc total) and it grows the same way. How is this called? Thanks and very intuitive vídeo!!
Can you make a video on how you keep their environment sustainable. Like what you use for temperature control and humidity control. I’m thinking of a shed under my porch. I just don’t have room indoors.

@@SporenSprout thank you🙏🏻
What’s your favorite bag like the one u used in the hardwood pellet video ? Thanks. Just ordered some things from you.
The filter patch bags I use are called unicorn bags but they have different suppliers on Amazon too. I used the size 8” X 5” X 20”.
With 85% humidity, do you have to spray the fruiting blocks every day or does the relative humidity in tent keep them hydrated enough? thanks for the simple video
Don’t have to spray the blocks, they love 85 %
Got a question for ya! Moved my spawn into substrate but after I see the mycelium all over the block, it stalled and did not thicken up and is just stuck there. What can I do?
That usually means something is wrong with the substrate. Could be bacterial contamination or inconsistent mixing of the bran, water and sawdust. Did you mix the substrate in a 5 gallon bucket ?
Care to tell me what was the substate mix?
I'm wanting to make my own medicinal mushroom capsules. What are the best practices to pack the most from the mushrooms into a pill or powder form? Simply dehydrating or some other extraction process? I was hoping to avoid too much use of alcohol if possible.
Alcohol extraction is not necessary with Turkey Tail, Shiitake & Maitake. For these mushrooms it’s the Beta Glucans which hold the most medicine. Simply simmer them for a few hours, blend into a slurry the consistency of applesauce, dehydrate & powder.
For more info I highly recommend the book: CHRISTOPHER HOBBS'S MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE.
@@thlionnesss thank you, I shall grab a copy
I heard Stamets say it's the mycelium that carries the important compounds in immune system support - not the fruiting body. Is that true?
Not entirely, he is just trying to sell his easy to make mycelium grain products
How do you control mold? Everytime I flush the blocks always end up molding?
Either your substrate is not fully sterilized or you introduce contamination while transferring colonized grain into the substrate. That part really needs a good flow hood to have better chances. But it is really just a race against contamination and it does win in the end.
Question : what do you do with the bag after harvesting? Can you re use it to grow more?
Yes you can put it back in the fruiting chamber and it will grow from the same spots or you can cut new spots. You can dunk the block in water for 2-4 hours to rehydrate it if it feels light.
@@SporenSprout How many flushes would you expect from one bag and what's your grain spawn to sub ratio?
How can you tell it's ready to harvest? I've got some decent size fruits and am wondering when to pull them.
They usually only grow about 2-4 inches wide. When the underside is fully covered in deep pores it is ready. I could have left mine another week or 2 but it would have dropped spores all over.
Hey, thank you for this, that was short and informative, I guess you skipped a few points. If you can tell us how many days it takes for the grain spwan to fully colonize and how many flushes you can get from 1 block ? also whats the correct time to harvest, in days or by visual identification ?
2-3 weeks to colonize the grain at 75F. You can get 3-6 flushes. Correct time to harvest is visual. They will grow a couple inches wider than in my video and can be harvested whenever at that point.
Hello. I'm growing TT in a sawdust block and it's staying white but getting thicker. Any idea what's happening?
Sounds like it needs more fresh air
Do you water sink bags between flushes?
Usually after 2nd flush
What temperature do you keep it at for colonization and fruiting?
75 F colonization and 70F fruiting
Hello Spore n' Sprout, I have a question, I have a trunk where I placed 6 bags very close together (they are practically stuck together) so that they colonize, my room temperature is 26 degrees Celsius, but when I went to check the bags, when I touched them, I felt them very hot, Is it because they are very close together? Or due to lack of ventilation? How should I place them?
Just place them on a shelf not touching each other. They shouldn’t be enclosed
are the intake and exhaust fan two different fans or one fan that does both functions
In a big tent like this it’s two separate fans. But in a small tent I just use exhaust fan.
@@SporenSprout thank you great advice
do you need a humidifier to grow turkey tail mushrooms or could u just grow them in your garage
I recommend using a shot gun fruiting chamber:
ruclips.net/video/59bAiZATiOs/видео.html
can i fruit in a monotub as well?
Yeah but you will probably need more air, something like a shot gun fruiting chamber would be better but it should work either way.
will they keep flushing after the first flush?
Yes they will continue growing from the same exact spots
After harvest, Do you dehydrate them?
Yes
@@SporenSprout I'm so impressed. I thought that it took 6 months or more to grow Turkey Tail. I'm glad that I saw your video.
How many harvests do you get from one bag?
2
I just bought some dowels of Turkey Tail & I'm having a hard time finding a place to grow them as I'm renting. I'd love to grow them inside but I'm concerned about being able to vent them. I have a rack that has a plastic cover but I'm lost from there.
I would make a small grow tent like this: ruclips.net/video/XI6MRunsVlc/видео.html
@@SporenSprout Thank you, I just found that after I asked. I have the same tent only wider, thanks for the links to the items you used. ☺️
So there's no way to fruit this without some equipment?, can't just store them in a monotub?.
Yeah you can grow them in a shotgun fruiting chamber
Brother can you please help me out to get this live liquid culture..🥺
I do not ship internationally right now but I suggest going into the forest near you and correctly identifying Turkey tail, bring it home and take a spore print or tissue culture on to agar plates to establish your live culture.
have you ever tried using your spawn on the bark of an old log??
No I haven’t tried that yet
I cut down big branches off a silver maple tree and put the cutting on a north face of a carport and the Turkey tails are growing all over this wood. Keep in mind I'm in Oregon and gets lots of moisture...
Can you get a second flush with Turkey tail?
Yes you can
You were reading my mind Lex. Same fruiting conditions for that second flush? Best, most thorough Turkey Tail video I have seen! Thanks bro.
@@tomanderson848 Yes you don’t even have to rehydrate to get a second flush, it will grow from the same spot even.
I was always told that it takes over 6 months to grow Turkey Tail. I am so confused!
It only took me 1-2 months.
@@SporenSprout How many flushes did you get?
@@mindmatrixhypnosis4411 after I harvested I just put the block back on the shelf in the fruiting chamber and it fruited again from the same spot. You can get 3-4 flushes especially if you rehydrate the block when it dries out.
